Topiary Joe sculpts the ultimate in green cars

Efficient cars are all the rage these days, but Joe Kyte has made a business of crafting some of the coolest green cars around – literally. Kyte is better known by his nickname Topiary Joe, and in addition to being a talented artist, he is also a real gearhead. Kyte has been creating topiaries for the last 20 years. It began when he was marketing greenhouse products to Walt Disney World and saw their plant sculptures. He realized that he could do that and since then, has done around 3,400 pieces. His most intriguing creations are the rolling sculptures that move and turn. Prices for those start at about $18,000 and can be as high as $30,000. While, the wheels are machine-bent, Kyte said all the other parts are done with a table vice and a Lincoln Electric arc welder. Topiary Joe is taking the Porsche (pictured above) to Palm Beach later this year to sell or says he may donate it to Porsche North America. If you really want it, the sculpture is currently on Craigslist for sale for $24,000. Topiary Joe has also had a life-long love of cars. "I was driving my first MG Midget before I was 14," he told Autoblog. He grew up in Oak Ridge, TN, where the Manhattan Project was partially developed. He says the town was full of recent college grads driving Mercedes, and he caught the bug. His automotive mentor was a nuclear physicist who taught him to repair and restore the Mercs. Kyte has completed commissions for Sandals Resort, Dreamworks, Absolut, and many more. Among his favorite creations is the Ferrari that he created at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that is now exhibited at the airport each year before the race. A pre-season full of talking points was swapped for a brand-new set of talking points after the running of the opening grand prix of the 2013 Formula One season. The consistency of the regulations from last year to this year and the triplicate dominance of Infiniti Red Bull Racing meant that no one would have been that surprised if the relative order of things remained the same. And then there were those Pirellis, the Italian company talking up the fact that its super soft tires would only go off so quickly that it would force teams to pit at least twice during the race.
Even then, no one could have seen the first round of pit stops beginning on Lap 5.

1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Sells For $38 Million At Auction

A 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO became the most expensive car ever sold during an automotive auction Thursday night when a buyer paid $38 million for the vehicle at a Bonhams event. Only 39 of the racers were ever built, and it is a favorite among collectors. One reportedly sold for $52 million in a private sale. If true, it would be the most expensive car ever purchased. Another Ferrari GTO built for legendary racecar driver Stirling Moss sold for $35 million in 2012. Thursday's sale broke the auction record set at a Goodwood auction last year of a Mercedes W196R that was driven by Juan Manuel Fangio to wins in the 1954 German and Swiss Grand Prix races by $8 million. Pretty good for a car that went to the auction block with no reserve, meaning there was no minimum price set for the sale of the car, though bidding started at $11 million, according to the Los Angeles Times. The Ferrari 250 GTO was the star of the show, but it wasn't the only rare Ferrari on the auction block. Bonhams brought ten of the most collectable Ferraris in the world on stage, including a 1962 250 GT Short-Wheelbase Speciale Aerodinamica that went for $6.875 million, a 1953 250 Mille Miglia Berlinetta driven to racing victory by Phil Hill for $7.26 million and even a 1978 312 T3 Formula One car for $2.31 million. All told, the Ferraris sold for $65.945 million, according to Autoblog.
