The first $2.5M Ferrari F60 America arrives in Palm Beach
Tue, Jan 26 2016There's a rather happy-looking individual in Palm Beach today. And well he should be. After all, he just took delivery of the very first Ferrari F60 America. Can't remember the F60 America? We can hardly blame you, seeing as how it has been well over a year since Ferrari first unveiled it in Beverly Hills back in October 2014. It's not the successor to the F40 and F50 as the name might suggest – that role having already been taken by the Enzo and LaFerrari – but rather a special take on the F12 Berlinetta. It features a unique roadster bodystyle, an evocative (if not downright retro) blue and white NART livery, and the 6.3-liter V12 in 730-horsepower spec that would later appear in the F12 TdF. It's a worthy successor, in short, to previous front-engined V12 roadsters from Maranello, like the 550 Barchetta, 575 Superamerica, and 599 SA Aperta. The Prancing Horse marque set out to build only ten examples, each destined for these shores, in celebration of Ferrari's 60 years in the US market. Despite the shocking $2.5 million sticker price, all of them were spoken for before it was even unveiled. The first was finally delivered on Monday to its eagerly awaiting owner during the 25th annual Palm Beach Cavallino Classic, in front of some of the country's top Ferrari collectors and aficionados. The first F60 America consigned Palm Beach, 25th January – The first F60 America was delivered this weekend to the delight of a discerning crowd of Ferrari collectors and enthusiasts during the 25th annual Palm Beach Cavallino Classic. This strictly limited-edition car, which was produced to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Ferrari in America, is the first of just ten to be delivered nationwide. The car pays homage to American clients' great passion for both the V12 engine and open-top driving. The F60 America's bodywork adopts the classic North American Racing Team livery, and the special Ferrari 60th Anniversary Prancing Horse badge on the wheelarches appears on the tunnel in the cockpit. This beautiful example in Blu Nart livery – Bianco Italia looked instantly at home under the azure Florida sky. Ferrari looks to cut 20% total C02 emissions over 7 years
Tue, 24 Jun 2014In the late 1970s, performance cars suffered a huge blow when the necessity for better economy and lower emissions crippled their power. It took nearly a decade for the horsepower to return. Today, we're in the middle of another push for greater vehicle efficiency, but don't expect another era of malaise this time. Instead, lightweight materials, turbos and hybrids mean that everyone can be happy. However, the pressure to clean up isn't just for the mass market, supercars must improve too, but Ferrari at least seems to be taking on the challenge in stride.
Ferrari Powertrain Director Vittorio Dini recently told Automotive News Europe that the Prancing Horse will improve its current average C02 emissions of 270 grams per kilometer by 20 percent by 2021, to reach about 216 grams of C02 per kilometer. To achieve these lofty ambitions, the company will exploit a relatively simple path. "In the future, all of our V8s will use turbos," said Dini said to ANE. Also, its V12s will use hybridization because it'll be a better choice for them compared to the heat of multiple turbos, he claimed.
The first steps of this strategy are already in front of us. The new California T ditches its naturally aspirated V8 in favor of a smaller displacement, more powerful turbocharged unit, and the LaFerrari is already using the hybrid V12. Dini's quote certainly lends some credence to the rumor that the 2015 refresh for the 458 Italia may use an even more powerful version of the California's turbo V8. With a new Ferrari model planned for each year between now and 2018, the Prancing Horse seems unperturbed by any threats posed by emissions.
Ferrari 458 Speciale A trots out its 597 sun-drenched ponies [w/video]
Thu, Oct 2 2014To say that Ferrari has made some powerful drop-tops over the years would be like saying the Pope has been known to make a couple of blessings here and there. There was the F50, the 575 Superamerica and the 599 SA Aperta, to name just a few. But this is the most powerful Spider it has ever made. Taking its curtain call at the Paris Motor Show today is the new Ferrari 458 Speciale A – successor to the F430-based 16M Scuderia Spider and lovechild of the 458 Spider and 458 Speciale. That means it's got the same 4.5-liter V8 – all 597 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of it – as the Speciale coupe, but with the folding aluminum roof from the Spider. Best of both worlds, as they say - especially with a 0-62 time quoted at three seconds flat. But since Maranello will only produce less than 500 of them, you'd better check it out in our gallery of live shots above. This content is hosted by a third party.
