Ferrari 400 Superamerica Aerodinamico fetches record $4.4M

RM Sotheby's moved an impressive $38.6 million in vintage metal at Amelia Island this year. And the top lot was the sleek classic you see here. It's a 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica LWB Coupe Aerodinamico, and its $4.4 million final tally is a record for its type. That's well past what it was estimated to sell for, with pre-sale expectations ranging from $2.7-3.3 million. Sports Car Market records that the previous high-water mark stood only a few hundred grand less at $4.07 million, achieved by a similar example sold by Gooding & Company last January. This particular example was the show car at the 1962 Turin Auto Show and has belonged to Erwin Goldschmidt and his family for the past four decades. As much as it sold for, of course, the Superamerica wasn't the only lot on the docket at RM Sotheby's Amelia Island sale. Other top sellers included a 1984 Ferrari 288 GTO and '68 330 GTS that sold for $2.6 and $2.2 million, respectively, a Pagani Huayra that topped $2 million, and a Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback that went for a high bid of $1.8 million. There was even a highly sought-after 1985 Ford RS200 Evolution that found a new home for $522,500 and a 2003 Aston Martin DB AR1 that went for $363,000. These are two Ferrari design studies that led to the LaFerrari

Ferrari apparently worked through nine design concepts for its LaFerrari supercar recently shown at the Geneva Motor Show, and has put two of them on display at its museum in Maranello, Italy. Both from 2011, the Manta (pictured) is harder edged and looks closest to the finished product.
The other, the Tensostruttura, is much more fluid and looks like it probably came from the past or the future, not so much the present. You can check them both out in the videos below and register your take on what might have been.

Here's the first production Ferrari Sergio, and it's already been delivered

Not even three months after its production announcement, Ferrari has already delivered the first Sergio, a wildly modified 458 Spider meant to honor Sergio Pininfarina, founder of the eponymous design studio that has turned out so many memorable prancing horses. Unsurprisingly, the roofless Ferrari, the first of six, was delivered to the Middle East, going to the SBH Royal Auto Gallery in the United Arab Emirates' capital, Abu Dhabi. Ferrari handed over the keys at the Yas Marina Circuit, which is currently playing host to the Finali Mondiali Ferrari, the same place the FXX K debuted earlier this week. With a 605-horsepower, 4.5-liter V8, the Sergio can hit 60 miles per hour in just three seconds, although this particular Ferrari is about a lot more than performance. The Pininfarina styling is the real focus here, giving a few lucky owners the opportunity to enjoy concept-car styling in a road-legal machine. Unlike the original Sergio, that debuted at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, though, the production model is somewhat tamer. Blame the necessity that is the windshield. That, though is the most significant change in evidence. All the very best parts of the concept car have seemingly made it through to production, including the lovely forward-swept rollbar and the stylish black element that defines the profile. Designed by Pininfarina, just six of this incredibly limited edition roadster are being built. The car was created to celebrate the spirit and core values of the historic Cambiano company in the 60th anniversary year of its collaboration with the Prancing Horse. Needless to say, Sergio was the only possible choice of name for the model, in homage to great Sergio Pininfarina, who sealed the unique, longstanding partnership with Ferrari. The Ferrari Sergio is a genuinely radical car. It is both exclusive and spare in the sense that every single element aboard is focused entirely on performance.
