1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Sells For $38 Million At Auction

A 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO became the most expensive car ever sold during an automotive auction Thursday night when a buyer paid $38 million for the vehicle at a Bonhams event. Only 39 of the racers were ever built, and it is a favorite among collectors. One reportedly sold for $52 million in a private sale. If true, it would be the most expensive car ever purchased. Another Ferrari GTO built for legendary racecar driver Stirling Moss sold for $35 million in 2012. Thursday's sale broke the auction record set at a Goodwood auction last year of a Mercedes W196R that was driven by Juan Manuel Fangio to wins in the 1954 German and Swiss Grand Prix races by $8 million. Pretty good for a car that went to the auction block with no reserve, meaning there was no minimum price set for the sale of the car, though bidding started at $11 million, according to the Los Angeles Times. The Ferrari 250 GTO was the star of the show, but it wasn't the only rare Ferrari on the auction block. Bonhams brought ten of the most collectable Ferraris in the world on stage, including a 1962 250 GT Short-Wheelbase Speciale Aerodinamica that went for $6.875 million, a 1953 250 Mille Miglia Berlinetta driven to racing victory by Phil Hill for $7.26 million and even a 1978 312 T3 Formula One car for $2.31 million. All told, the Ferraris sold for $65.945 million, according to Autoblog.

And then there was this, among the top rung of eighties memorabilia, a 1986 Ferrari Testarossa claimed to be one of two used in Miami Vice. You'll remember that the show began with James "Sonny" Crockett driving a black Daytona Coupe, but it was a replica built on C3 Corvette running gear. The story is that Ferrari sued the replica maker and made the show's producers an offer: blow up the replica on the show in return for two Testarossas to use. And that, it's said, is how Crockett's convertible got hit by a missile during an undercover assignment with an arms dealer. The original cars were Carbon Black, but the show's cameras couldn't keep up with them at night, so director Michael Mann had them painted white. For sale on eBay with a Buy It Now price of $1.75M, the seller says he has the all of the service history paperwork and documentation from Ferrari North America. According to the seller, he bought it about three years ago; before that, it was last sold in 1991 and sat in a Miami garage for years, so it has 16,000 miles on the odometer. The Hagerty Price Guide Report shows Testarossa values have nearly doubled in four years, but a pristine find should still only fetch about $93,500, just to make sure you're clear on the seller's Hollywood premium. Apple announces CarPlay in-car iPhone interface

Apple, maker of tech items like the iPhone, iPad and Mac line of computers, is extending its reach into the automotive market, making a fairly big announcement ahead of the Geneva Motor Show. No, it hasn't bought Tesla (yet). Instead, Apple has announced CarPlay, an all-new means of controlling an iPhone through your car.
Now, this doesn't strike us as some gimmicky thing. It's become increasingly common for automakers to take advantage of the high-speed data streams its customers enjoy on their smartphones in order to integrate navigation, traffic, audio and other infotainment items into a car's touchscreen interface. The Chevrolet Spark and Sonic are two prime examples of this move, using an iPhone's data stream for Siri integration and data for a third-party navigation app.
Owners will be able to plug in their iPhones to their cars via the USB port and gain control of a number of the device's functions, all through a car's touchscreen.
