Well-maintained 6-speed Modena Coupe on 2040-cars
Emeryville, California, United States
1999 Ferrari 360 Modena
Part of a long line of compact mid-engined Ferraris dating back to the legendary 206 and 246 Dino, the F360 Modena bristled with innovative technology upon its introduction. The biggest news was undoubtedly the decision to switch to an aluminum chassis, which increased rigidity by 40% while simultaneously decreasing weight by 28% over the outgoing 355. The engine in the 360 was slightly larger and more powerful, displacing 3.6 liter and producing 400hp, providing a 0-60 time of 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 189mph. In short, the car is everything that modern Ferrari should be: fast, exotic, visually arresting, and an outstanding driver’s car. Most cars were equipped with the F1 paddle shift gearbox with electronically actuated clutch, though a few examples were fitted with conventional gated shifter 6-speed manual transmissions. This particular example has been well maintained and is nicely equipped with 6-speed transmission, challenge grille and fender shields. In recent years, it has belonged to two California owners who have maintained the car at the same shop, Stewart’s Automotive in Sacramento, California. The car has a new battery and also received new rear rotors and pads 500 miles ago. Additionally, the exhaust manifolds and ABS module were also replaced, which are common failure points on these cars. The invoices show regular preventative maintenance and the occasional other fix (new wiper switch, alternator cable etc.), as well as a new clutch at 31,000 miles and a belt service at 35,000 miles in May of 2008. Consequently, the car is due for a belt service at this time. Miscellaneous service records go back as far as 9000 miles showing that the car has been properly cared for. Cosmetically, the car makes a strong impression and is certainly impactful as only a yellow Ferrari can be. The paintwork is generally good, with a few scuffs and scrapes to the front bumper and one significant blemish in the front bumper that has damage to the paint but has not punctured the bumper cover and could be remedied without replacing the bumper. The paintwork is otherwise attractive and presentable and the car has clear bra to protect various areas of the paintwork as well as the headlamps. The lights and glass are excellent and the wheels are excellent overall with small areas of curb rash on each right wheel and none on the left wheels. The interior is generally in excellent shape other than the typical stickiness to some of the plastic trims on the interior, which is common on Ferraris of this era. The leather is excellent across the board, which minimal wear to the driver’s seat bolster. The dashboard is very good, with minor shirinkage around the defroster vents only. The carpets are excellent and the contrasting yellow stitching looks very smart. The engine compartment and trunk are both unmodified and clean, as befits a well-cared for and properly maintained car. The trunk is surprisingly capacious. The car is fitted with Quicksilver exhaust, which is well made and impressive-sounding. The car is complete with spare tire kit, tools, and books. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a well-maintained and complete example of a usable high performance modern Ferrari. It has a clean Carfax and although it is due for a belt service by time, it has been properly maintained and comes with a thick file of service records, as well as books and tools. It has few modifications and has escaped the invasive changes from which these cars sometimes suffer. Furthermore, it is a 6-speed example, which is a more effective solution than the early F1 gearboxes used in Ferraris of this period. TERMS AND CONDITIONS: This car is sold AS IS without warranty. Without engine deal, Red Bull could be squeezed out of F1
Wed, Oct 14 2015It would have seemed unthinkable just a couple of years ago when it was winning more races than it lost and scoring one world championship after another, but these days Red Bull can't get a competitive engine. And if it doesn't get one soon, it could be forced out of Formula One altogether. This development emerges after two years of the once indomitable but now deteriorating relationship between Red Bull and its longtime engine partner Renault. When F1 switched from the previous V8 engines to the new hybrid turbo V6 power units ahead of last season, Renault dropped the ball, and Mercedes picked it up. Ferrari has since recovered much of the lost ground to push the Mercedes factory team for wins, but Red Bull and Renault have not. The stress of falling off their perch has left both parties pointing fingers at each other to the point that the team's longtime technical director Adrian Newey doesn't think the marriage is salvageable, or worth salvaging. "Unfortunately, our relationship with Renault is pretty terminal – there's been too much of a marriage breakdown, so we have no engine," said Newey. That's left Red Bull looking elsewhere for a new engine deal, but so far it's been unable to find one. The prospect of replacing sponsor Infiniti and supplier Red Bull with a similar partnership with Aston Martin and Mercedes has apparently come to naught. And the proposed buyout and engine deal from the Volkswagen Group evidently collapsed in the wake of that brand's diesel emissions scandal. That leaves Red Bull to turn to one of the existing engine suppliers in the series, and apparently neither Ferrari nor Mercedes are willing to sell their engines to one of their chief rivals. As McLaren has demonstrated this season, the Honda engines aren't up to speed, either. Which leaves Red Bull with nowhere else to turn. And if it doesn't find something in time for next season (or the following one at the latest), Newey says it may have to pack it in and close up shop. "Red Bull should not be put in a position where they're only there to make up the numbers." Shell Ultimate Automotive Enthusiast contest returns to send winner to Barrett-Jackson and Maranello
Wed, 14 Aug 2013The first Shell V-Power Ultimate Enthusiast contest was held last year and sent finalists to a VIP experience at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, while the grand prize winner went to Maranello, Italy for some intimate time with Ferrari. The Dutch member of the seven sisters is doing it again this year: from now until September 17 anyone who wants a chance to live the same adventure can submit stories and photos that prove why they're the ultimate enthusiast.
Among the judging panel will be Roger Penske, Craig Jackson of Barrett-Jackson, drag racer Don Prudhomme, Tony Marini of Hot August Nights, Car and Driver chief Eddie Alterman, Road & Track honcho Larry Webster and last year's contest winner Harold Craige (pictured above with his wife at Fiorano).
Anyone in the US is welcome to submit. Three finalists will be flown to Scottsdale for a three-day VIP tour of Barrett-Jackson's January action, and they'll get a year's worth of V-Power premium gasoline. The grand prize winner will be announced in Arizona, and that person will get a week in Italy to explore the Ferrari factory complex and drive one of the company cars on the Fiorano track. Having been to the Maranello factory ourselves, we can attest that it's a bucket-list item for anyone who truly digs cars.
2015 Monaco F1 Grand Prix race recap [spoilers]
Mon, May 25 2015Lewis Hamilton came to Monaco with a new three-year deal with Mercedes-AMG Petronas and a vow to not let anything, including any "mistakes" by teammate Nico Rosberg, stand in the way of his best qualifying effort. Mercedes reportedly made it rain with a 100-million-pound deal, and Hamilton made it rain right back with his first pole position at Monaco. Rosberg did make a mistake but this time it was behind Hamilton, which meant he stuffed-up the qualifying attempts of rival drivers like Sebastian Vettel. So Rosberg starts second, 0.342 behind Hamilton but 0.449 ahead of Vettel in the Ferrari. Daniel Ricciardo thinks he should have been third, but a communication error with his engineers left him in the wrong engine setting for his final hot lap, so by the very first corner he'd lost the time he would have needed to get higher than fourth on the grid. The second Infiniti Red Bull Racing of Daniil Kvyat slots in behind him, ahead of the second Ferrari of Kimi "Not A Very Happy Day" Raikkonen, who just can't get it going lately. Sergio Perez did for the Sahara Force India what the car can't do on its own, which is grab a top-ten qualifying spot. Toro Rosso rookie Carlos Sainz had qualified eighth but missed a call to the weigh bridge, so he's been slapped into the pit lane. Pastor Maldonado in the Lotus inherits his eighth place, ahead of rookie Max Verstappen in the second Toro Rosso, and Jenson Button in the McLaren. Button only got up there because of two penalties: for Sainz, and Romain Grosjean who had qualified 11th but took a penalty for a gearbox change. Want to know how hard it is to do better on race day than in qualifying at Monaco? Even the never-say-die Fernando Alonso said, "Monte Carlo is a train of cars on Sunday, the race finishes on Saturday afternoon." Well obviously, he didn't take Max Verstappen's seek-and-destroy tactics into account. The young Dutchman had made passing look like a real option in Monaco, getting past Maldonado at St. Devote on Lap 7 after a bit of argy-bargy on Lap 6, then taking advantage of blue flags to slink past teammate Carlos Sainz and Williams driver Valtteri Bottas while hiding in Sebastian Vettel's slipstream. He tried the same move on Romain Grosjean on Lap 65, but Grosjean locked him out. Verstappen lined up the Lotus driver over the following laps, then looked like he slipped to the inside at St.
