The band organ is "the nicest one I've ever renovated and restored" according to the well-known man who did the restoration. He wanted to buy it from me after he was done restoring because he said it had the best sound of any of its type he's ever heard."

One of the greatest joys in my life is when I flip on the switch to my 1912 North Tonawanda Band Organ (it was renovated from a barrel organ to play paper rolls in the mid-1920s by the Wurlitzer Company). It sits on the back of my dear old 1929 Dodge Brothers 3/4 ton pickup truck (note, this is a Dodge BROTHERS truck, from the last year that Dodge Brothers was in business as the Dodge Brothers Company - they later became Dodge Company that very same year.)

I found this old band organ in terrible shape about 12 years ago at the Red Barron Antique Auction in Roswell, Georgia and despite it only playing a few notes and being filled with hornets nests and the facade almost gone due to the rot of sitting outdoors in a Georgia field for several years, I purchased it for $500. The auctioneer banged the gavel on the podium and laughingly said, "David, you'll buy anything!"

I got the old girl home and wondered what on earth I had purchased. I luckily met a great old retired engineer later that year who loved mechanized music and worked on these band organs as well as old player pianos and such. I sent the band organ to Kim Pontius of Hartford City, Indiana, to restore. It took two years, but wowsa, did Kim ever do a marvelous job!  In fact, reknown in the band organ business, Kim said that he had been rebuilding band organs for as long as he could remember and this one particular organ has some of the "sweetest and most perfect sound".  He even offered to buy it from me if I didn't have the large amount of money required to pay him for his rebuilding services.

My old band organ now looks and sounds like it did new and even plays better for it was a barrel organ then but now can play the ornate music from paper Wurlitzer rolls.  It was converted in the mid-1920's by Wurlitzer Company to play their paper rolls instead of the big brass pin rolls.   I put it in parades and carnivals around the Midwest and it is always the star of the crowd! People stand around for hours watching, listening and even dancing to it!

Nicknamed by the locals, The Pride of Long Beach, the truck and band organ have started every Long Beach, Indiana Independence Day parade for the past 8 years to the joy and enthusiasm of the whole community.  There's nothing like listening to an old fashioned Sousa march on a period instrument which was around playing his marches while the famous bandmaster was alive conducting them!

Included in this auction are about a dozen different paper music rolls all the way from European Favorites music to Patriotic March music to Old Time Era Gone By music.  Each roll has about 10 to 12 songs on it.  Also, included is a Honda portable whisper quiet 2000 generator with EU Inverter.  This generator will run the band organ's electric motor for hours.  I've even had it running for over 8 hours at a time and only went through about two gallons of gasoline!

I have thought long and hard about what to do with my dear old "Spirit of Long Beach" band organ and pickup truck. I am now willing to offer it for sale to the top bidder.  Would you like an old mechanized music maker and antique pickup truck to be the American centerpiece of your antique automobile or mechanized music collection?  Can you live without owning your own 1912 North Tonawanda band organ and being able to listen to the "happiest music on earth" whenever you desire? Contact me if you want more information.

Best,

David J. Valkema

Ford, Chrysler and Mazda expand scope of Takata airbag recalls

Fri, Dec 5 2014

The scope of the Takata airbag inflator recall is ballooning once again across the United States. Where Honda has elected to take its driver-side airbag campaign nationwide, Chrysler Group and Ford have now announced expanded regional actions to cover some passenger-side airbag inflators. Mazda is adding more regions, as well. For Chrysler Group, the campaign covers the inflators on 149,150 examples of the 2003-model-year Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups. The recall is limited to vehicles sold or ever registered in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and the territories of American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Saipan, and the Virgin Islands. The company will begin notifying affected customers on January 19. According to Chrysler's announcement of the action, the passenger side inflators in these trucks "are of a type that is not used in any of the other vehicles affected by Chrysler Group's regional field action." The automaker says that it's not aware of any actual failures or accidents in these pickups and even claims there are no "observed failures in laboratory testing of its airbag modules." The company is continuing to study the problem, though. Ford is taking a similar step by issuing a recall of inflators for 38,500 examples of the 2004-2005 Ranger and 2005-2006 Ford GT. The campaign only affects vehicles originally sold or ever registered in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Certain zip codes of Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Guam, Saipan and American Samoa are also covered. There's already precedent for passenger-side airbags to be covered under the Takata inflator recall. When many automakers announced campaigns in June, BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota all included that side in some of their repairs. Subaru subsequently did, as well. In addition, Mazda is expanding the scope of its recall to add Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Saipan, Guam, American Samoa, US Virgin Islands, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas to the affected areas. The company estimates that it has a total of 86,773 vehicles in need of repair. Mazda is also teaming with Toyota to begin independent testing of the Takata inflators. Scroll down to read all of the automakers' announcements of these newly expanded recalls. Statement: Air-Bag Inflators December 3, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich.

2014 Dodge Dart Blacktop glosses over performance

Tue, 14 Jan 2014

The Dodge Dart is a decent little car. It's honest, basic transportation, and many of us at Autoblog are genuinely fond of the Alfa Romeo-based compact sedan. For 2014, not a whole lot changes in the Dart world, save the addition of this new Blacktop edition that makes its debut here at the Detroit Auto Show.
It's all very simple, this Blacktop package, and doesn't actually alter performance in any way. Instead, buyers are treated to blacked-out exterior bits like 18-inch wheels, the crosshair grille and headlamp bezels. Inside, black/tungsten or black/red cloth seats are available, with red contrast stitching throughout the cabin.
Adding the Blacktop pack to your Dart SXT with the Rallye Appearance Group will set you back a scant $295, and while it's just an appearance package, it all looks pretty nice to us.

2014 Dodge Journey Crossroad

Thu, 17 Jul 2014

Watchers of the auto industry will notice a theme among the formerly bankrupted American automakers, General Motors and Chrysler. There are the post-bankruptcy vehicles, and the pre-bankruptcy vehicles. The former, in the case of Chrysler, include the Jeep Grand Cherokee, as well as the 200 and 300. For GM, there's the Cadillac ATS, Chevrolet Impala and Buick Encore, among others. These vehicles have the freshest styling, with sharp exteriors and well-crafted interiors, as well as advanced powertrains and well-sorted chassis.
As for the pre-bankruptcy vehicles, they tend to be easy to spot. Most suffer from inferior driving dynamics, cheaper interiors, poorer fuel economy and often homely looks (we know, there were some decent cars before the bankruptcy, but they were pretty heavily outweighed by the bad ones). Think late, last-generation Chevrolet Impala or Chrysler 200. Increasingly, though, we're seeing vehicles that split the balance between pre- and post-bankruptcy. Vehicles like the Dodge Journey.
The Journey debuted in 2007 as a 2008 model year vehicle, meaning it should fall into the latter category. But heavily breathed upon in 2011, it now enjoys a new, 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, a big, critically acclaimed touchscreen display and in the case of today's tester, a new-for-2014 Crossroad spec.
