This is a rare low miles beast; you’ll be hard pressed to find one restored to such a high standard. The ’59 Dodge has outrageous fins; they start at the doors and just keep climbing, only to be outdone by the four rocket-style taillights that point like flames behind the car. It’s longer, wider and more flamboyant that its predecessors and successors. And this ‘59’s unique features extend to the interior too. The bench seats are clad in a one off cloth for 1959, with gold metallic thread woven through. It has an eye-catching ribbon speedometer, which starts off green, changes to yellow at 35mph and then to red at 50mph. The rear vision mirror is mounted vertically off the dash and of course, there’s the futuristic push-button automatic. The car is fitted with original NOS wheel spats and Custom Royal hub caps. This car has been in Australia about 20 years; I’ve had her for about 8 years with two Aussie owners prior to myself. It currently lives in Western Australia, which has a climate slightly drier than California (and no snow!). During her time in Australia, she’s only done a few thousand miles. When I bought her, the paint was intact but old - at best a good 20 footer - but the panels were dead straight and there was no rust, except for a spot on one sill. And there were no accident repairs. The original interior fabric was and still is in amazing condition, no sign of wear, which supports the low miles on the odometer. I drove the car occasionally for a few years, typically a 50 mile return trip down the coast, but about 4 years ago, decided it was time she had a full body-on restoration. I have hundreds of photos before and after work was performed. The work done on her includes a full strip followed with a two-tone 2-pak paint job in coral and rose-quartz, factory colours for 1959. All rear chrome work was re-done, and although the low miles motor was in good shape, it was fully rebuilt (receipted) including heads with hardened valve seats for ULP. The huge power boosted drum 11” brakes have been recently serviced with new wheel cylinders, new bearings and new drums at rear in the last couple of months. The car has new rear shock absorbers. Other rubbers and bushes have been replaced where necessary. The master cylinder unit was replaced a few years ago. In the cabin, the heater box and heater core were removed and serviced. The original chrome valve radio was repaired and works fine. It’s currently connected to two recessed speakers on the back dash and to the radio waves via twin rear aerials. I haven’t touched the instrument cluster or the dash as it’s in excellent condition. The carpet was replaced with molded carpet from the US. The roof lining was replaced by a professional upholsterer with material sourced from the US. The boot’s fully carpeted and has a full spare wheel cover. Because I’ve had two ’59 Dodge sedans and this ’59 2dr hardtop over the last 20 years, I’ve accumulated plenty of spares including a large assortment of brightware, including excellent Coronet hubcaps, various mechanical and electrical components, including an original rebuilt carburetor, distributor, spare ’59 Dodge valve radio, at least half a dozen taillights (still in boxes) and numerous other assorted items. I also have a full RHD dash and instrument cluster from an Australian delivered factory RHD. I also purchased original cloth fabric for the front seats, just in case. Please don’t call if you want parts. They stay with the car. This car is not perfect, but it’s damned close. I’ve spent tens of thousands of dollars on this car but it’s now time for someone else to enjoy the pleasure of owning this unique car. Tesla Model S P85D shows 707-hp Dodge Challenger Hellcat how to drag race
Thu, Jan 22 2015Street Car Drags hosted a bang-up event at the Palm Beach International Raceway last weekend, with a list of massive horsepower ICE cars going up against one another and a trio of Tesla Model S P85Ds. One of those duels pitted the 691-horsepower Tesla against a 707-horsepower Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, and the result was an old-school beatdown and a world record for electric cars. The Model S P85D ran the quarter in 11.6 seconds at 114.6 miles per hour, the new mark for BEVs at the drag strip. Proving its pace, it ran three more times in 11.69, 11.72 and 11.76 seconds. It got from the start line to 60 miles per hour in 3.1 seconds. The Hellcat, well, it wasn't a race, really. It was the Hellcat's driver's first time at a drag strip and his first time trying to launch it, so after an excellent burnout ahead of the lights, he rolled to the line, almost jumped the start, balked at the real start and spun his tires for the first 100 feet down the strip. The theory is that he overheated his street tires during that burnout, and the resulting greasy rubber did what greasy rubber does. By the time he got to the other end 17.46 seconds later the Tesla driver had showered and was enjoying a funnel cake. When things go right, though, Dodge estimates the Hellcat will do 11.2-second runs on street tires and it has been clocked at 10.85 seconds at 126.18 mph on street-legal drag radials. Only in Japan: Dodge van one-make racing series is a thing
Wed, Jul 15 2015Japan seems willing to embrace a level of automotive insanity that many other places lack. Whether it's 1,200-horsepower Nissan GT-Rs blasting through tight, tree-lined mountain roads or advertisements with dances for the Toyota Prius Plug-in, the country definitely has a unique way of expressing a love for autos. The D-Van Grand Prix might be one of our favorite examples yet of crazy Japanese car culture, because the annual, one-make race at the Ebisu Circuit is exclusively for heavily customized Dodge vans. Like many great things, this wonderfully crazy idea came from a little rule breaking. D-Van Grand Prix organizer Takuro Abe was at a track event for a motorcycle racing school, and vans were used to haul the bikes around. During lunch someone came up with the idea for a race. Ignoring that the big machines weren't actually allowed on the circuit, the drivers headed out. The popularity has just grown since then. These days, the racing vans absolutely aren't the stock machines from the event's inspiration. In addition to stripped interiors and track rubber that you might expect, the list of mods for them is a mile long. For every possible advantage, the racers fit them with things like Brembo brakes, cross-drilled rotors, heavy-duty transmissions, and much more. Seeing vans lumbering around the track is very weird at first, but the racers take the competition very seriously. These folks even employ all sorts of little tricks to coax the most from the machines. This is a fascinating motorsports story, but be sure to turn on the subtitles to understand the interviews with the competitors.
Chrysler recalling 780k minivans over fire risk
Fri, 09 May 2014Chrysler is recalling 780,000 of its Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans from the 2010 to 2014 model years due to the possibility of circuits overheating, which can lead to a fire. Of the 780,000 total vans being recalled, Chrysler estimates that 644,850 are in the US, 106,980 are in Canada, 8,009 are in Mexico, and 20,638 are in other markets. All of the affected vehicles were built between August 25, 2010 and October 31, 2013.
Chrysler's engineers discovered that beverage spills or exposure to moisture (from rain, snow, car washes, and the like) were linked to circuits shorting in the window switch assembly. Short circuits can overheat, and thus, cause a fire.
Chrysler will contact owners and let them know when they may schedule service, at which point, the window switches will be replaced. In the interim, the automaker says that owners may visit their dealers after May 14 to have the switches disconnected.
