1973 Dodge Charger- Race Prepared! on 2040-cars
Cary, North Carolina, United States
This 1973 Dodge Charger has been in our family since around 1991 when I purchased it near downtown
Cary from a college student. At the time it had its original 400cid B block engine and A-727 Automatic with a stock 3 speed slap-stick shifter. Over the last 23 years, this car has been being transformed into a nearly complete race-prepared Stock Car with the intention of entering it into the SCCA SP2 Racing Class. Around 1997, we replaced the engine with one procured and built by Herb McCandless Racing out of Graham, NC. The engine block casting is a ‘First Run- Sixth Casting’ of the original 440cid Six Pack blocks that were only made for 2 1/2 years. These numbers are verifiable on the engine block boss stamp. In 2007, the car went through its second wave of heavy modifications which are detailed below. The vehicle has been modified to include a race-ready 5 speed transmission and many other improvements: • ENGINE: o Rebuilt personally by Dennis Shaw of Dennis Shaw Race Sports in Raleigh, NC o Compression ratio reduced from 10.14:1 to 9.96:1 (Full engine specs below) o All reciprocating parts have been Calico-coated by Calico Coatings in Morrisville, NC o All components MagnaFluxed twice o Fully balanced including dampener, flywheel and cam. Ported and polished intake and exhaust. Cast Iron Heads milled w/ hardened valve seats. o Doug Thorley Headers o Milodon #31580 Road Racing Oil Pan w/ Pickup# MIL-18328 o Road tested by Dennis Shaw after completion • COOLING / FUEL / EXHAUST / IGNITION o Edelbrock High Rise Intake and 4 bbl Carb o Griffin aluminum racing quality radiator and overflow o MSD Primary and Secondary ignition with heat-shielded plug wires o 3” Jet Hot Exhaust from Collectors to tailpipe o Flowmaster Mufflers o Will perform well on 93 Octane fuel; for full performance, use 108 Octane racing fuel. • TRANSMISSION AND DRIVELINE (Keisler Engineering) o Keisler 5 speed Aluminum Race transmission (#TRM-E4617A rated at 650HP / 650ft lb) o Keisler install kit including Aluminum / Titanium Bell housing, all wiring and cables, sheet metal components for AT / MT conversion, Pedal Kit o Billet Aluminum Flywheel o DSM Custom Driveshaft. 1200 ft lb rated with premium U-joints and slip yoke. Balance Certified o Stage-3 racing clutch (SDK043) and hydraulics kit o Tremec Shifter w/ Hurst T Handle (TKO-600) o Dana 9 3/4 rear end with final drive ratio of 3.55:1 • CHASSIS / SUSPENSION / STEERING o Energy Suspension Polyurethane bushings including Upper / Lower Control arms, Front / Rear Sway Bars, Front Stabilizer rods and Body Mounts o Energy Suspension Tie Rod Ends o Adjustable Upper Control Arms (not installed, but available) o FirmFeel Steering Gear • TIRES / WHEELS / BRAKES o Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/T Tires (28 x 10) o American Racing 15” Wheels o All new braking components, Front and Rear, OE quality or better • INTERIOR / INSTRUMENTATION / BODY o Autometer Racing Tach, Shift Light, and Oil Pressure Gauge o Sparco Racing Drivers Seat, Regular front Bucket passenger o Interior of car has been stripped to bare sheet metal in preparation for SCCA SP2 Race readiness o Fire Extinguisher mounted behind center console o The car is not painted. It has primer-gray paint on top of its current black paint which believe was originally red. The primer paint does have some mildew on it due to storage, and this is where the project has been left as we were trying to get the car fully Race-ready before the paint and related body work o Body sheet metal is in overall good condition and will require only minor bodywork to prep it for a good paint job o Car is street-legal with functioning lights, wipers, horn, and tire tread Since 1992, about $26,000 has been spent on this car, yet the car has not been driven on a daily or recreational basis since then, other than for road testing. We are asking for $18,000 because of the rare engine block, 5 speed transmission and accessories, chassis components, and other components that will serve the next owner very well going forward with the project. |

Only in Japan: Dodge van one-make racing series is a thing
Wed, Jul 15 2015Japan seems willing to embrace a level of automotive insanity that many other places lack. Whether it's 1,200-horsepower Nissan GT-Rs blasting through tight, tree-lined mountain roads or advertisements with dances for the Toyota Prius Plug-in, the country definitely has a unique way of expressing a love for autos. The D-Van Grand Prix might be one of our favorite examples yet of crazy Japanese car culture, because the annual, one-make race at the Ebisu Circuit is exclusively for heavily customized Dodge vans. Like many great things, this wonderfully crazy idea came from a little rule breaking. D-Van Grand Prix organizer Takuro Abe was at a track event for a motorcycle racing school, and vans were used to haul the bikes around. During lunch someone came up with the idea for a race. Ignoring that the big machines weren't actually allowed on the circuit, the drivers headed out. The popularity has just grown since then. These days, the racing vans absolutely aren't the stock machines from the event's inspiration. In addition to stripped interiors and track rubber that you might expect, the list of mods for them is a mile long. For every possible advantage, the racers fit them with things like Brembo brakes, cross-drilled rotors, heavy-duty transmissions, and much more. Seeing vans lumbering around the track is very weird at first, but the racers take the competition very seriously. These folks even employ all sorts of little tricks to coax the most from the machines. This is a fascinating motorsports story, but be sure to turn on the subtitles to understand the interviews with the competitors.
Dodge Dart getting hatchback variant... sort of
Thu, 25 Apr 2013In other parts of the world, Fiat builds and sells a version of the Dodge Dart called the Viaggio, and it appears that in addition to the current sedan bodystyle, a new hatchback version of the car is also in the works. Autocar says that the general manager for China's Guangzhou-Fiat joint venture, John Burton, has confirmed that a new Viaggio hatchback will be revealed by the end of this year before it goes on sale in early 2014.
The Viaggio will soon be joined by the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, which in China will be called the Liberty Light, at the Guangzhou-Fiat plant. While the idea of a Dodge Dart hatchback might be enough to enable most of us to forget about the Dodge Caliber, a North American variant doesn't appear to be in the cards. We reached out to Chrysler PR boss Rick Deneau, and he offered a succinct: "No plans at this time."
Dongfeng and PSA extend Chinese joint venture
Thu, Dec 19 2019BEIJING/PARIS — China's Dongfeng and Peugeot maker PSA are extending their business cooperation, despite the Chinese company reducing its stake in PSA to help smooth the French carmaker's merger with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). Dongfeng said on Thursday it had agreed with PSA to extend the duration of their joint venture Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen Automobiles (DPCA). Under the deal, the venture could get the rights to PSA's new brands in China and will benefit from new technologies and intellectual properties, the Chinese company said. PSA was not immediately available for comment. The announcement comes a day after the companies said Dongfeng would reduce its 12.2% stake in PSA by selling 30.7 million shares to the French company. Analysts said the move could smooth U.S. regulatory approval for PSA's roughly $50 billion (GBP38.97 billion) merger with Italian-American carmaker FCA. The sale of Dongfeng's shares in PSA, worth around 680 million euros ($757 million), will leave the Chinese group holding around 4.5% of the merged PSA-FCA, which is set to become the world's fourth-biggest carmaker by sales volumes. "As the cooperation between Dongfeng and PSA deepens, we expect the joint venture to continue making good progress in China," a Dongfeng representative said. On a conference call, Dongfeng said DPCA would have exclusive rights to PSA's Opel cars should the partners agree to bring the brand to China, and enjoy lower prices on car parts imported from PSA. Earlier this year, a document seen by Reuters showed Dongfeng and PSA plan to cut jobs at Wuhan-based DPCA and reduce its number of car plants to try to make the venture more profitable.
