Autoblog's guilty pleasure cars

Tue, Mar 10 2015

Guilty pleasures are part of life – don't even try to pretend like you don't have one (or two, or six). In the non-automotive space, this could come down to that secret playlist in your iPhone of songs you'll only listen to when you're alone; or think of that one TV show you really do love, but won't admit to your friends. I've got plenty, and so do you. Going back to cars, here's a particularly juicy one for me: several years ago, I had a mad crush on the very last iteration of the Cadillac DTS. Oh yes, the front-wheel-drive, Northstar V8-powered sofa-on-wheels that was the last remaining shred of the elderly-swooning days of Cadillac's past. Every time I had the chance to drive one, I was secretly giddy. Don't hate me, okay? These days, the DTS is gone, but I've still got a mess of other cars that hold a special place in my heart. And in the spirit of camaraderie, I've asked my other Autoblog editors to tell me some of their guilty pleasure cars, as well – Seyth Miersma, as you can see above, has a few choice emotions to share about the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. Read on to find out what cars make us secretly happy. Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG This decadent convertible is the epitome of the guilty pleasure. It's big, powerful, fairly heavy and it's richly appointed inside and out. It's a chocolate eclair with the three-pointed star on the hood. Given my druthers, I'd take the SL65 AMG, which delivers 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. That output is borderline absurd for this laid-back convertible. I don't care. You don't need dessert. Sometimes you just crave it. The SL line is about the feel you get on the road. The roof is open. The air, sun and engine sounds all embrace you. It's the same dynamic you could have experienced in a Mercedes a century ago, yet the SL gives you the most modern of luxuries. An Airscarf feature that warms my neck and shoulders through a vent embedded in the seat? Yes, please. Sure, it's an old-guy car. Mr. Burns and Lord Grantham are probably too young and hip for an SL65. I don't care. This is my guilty pleasure. Release the hounds. – Greg Migliore Senior Editor Ford Flex I drove my first Flex in 2009 when my mother let me borrow hers for the summer while I was away at college. The incredibly spacious interior made moving twice that summer a breeze, and the 200-mile trips up north were quite comfortable.

Dodge to sell off first Challenger SRT Hellcat for charity

Sun, 27 Jul 2014

Want to get your hands on a new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, and can't wait to be the first to get one? Las Vegas will be the place to be on September 27. That's where Barrett-Jackson will auction off the very first example. And you'd better bring your checkbook, because the bidding is sure to be fierce with all the proceeds going to charity.
The supercharged Challenger with VIN 0001 has been hand-painted in Stryker Red (usually reserved for the Viper) and features special badging, documentation and accompanying memorabilia - not to mention, of course, that 707-horsepower, 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi V8. The car will be on display this weekend as well at Barrett-Jackson's Hot August Nights auction in Reno.

Edmunds ranks the best used cars for 2013

Sun, 15 Sep 2013

When people ask us what car we would recommend for them, it's usually not easy to answer. To make a useful recommendation we must consider which of the numerous vehicle segments fits their needs best, and then choose one of the many vehicles offered in each segment. For some people, new cars don't meet their expectations of value, because they lose so much of it the moment they are purchased and driven off the dealer lot. For them, there's always the used-car market, where great deals can be found, but cars' histories of reliability and maintenance records - and perhaps that Certified Pre-Owned warranty - become ever-important factors playing into purchase choice.
To help out, Edmunds has done us the favor of assembling a list of the best used vehicles money can buy, covering model years 2006-2011, according to what it considers the most important criteria when shopping for used autos: reliability, safety, value and availability. That means unreliable, unsafe, super-expensive or limited-edition models don't appear on the list, but instead cars from each segment that are more likely to satisfy the general population.
There are some real goodies on the list, including but not limited to vehicles such as the capable Honda Fit, the cultish Honda Accord coupe (which can be had with a 240-horsepower V6 and a six-speed manual transmission some years), and the powerful Chevrolet Corvette. While Edmunds' choice of the Volvo C70 for best used convertible baffled us at first (not that it's a bad car), it redeemed itself by stating that the Mazda MX-5 still is an unofficial top choice if you don't require more than two seats.

DESCRIPTION
Designed by Dodge with intentions to bring a speedy body to the NASCAR high speed tracks, the new Charger proved to be fast and efficient, with only small body refinements. It bought the Dodge Charger a NASCAR Grand National Championship through the Pearson-Owens team with 14 first place wins! A very unique feature of the Charger was the blue electroluminescent dash lighting, and a folding rear seat & trunk pass-thru for a very large cargo area! The body was designed with a distinctive “electric shaver” front grill with electronic rotating headlights and a full length rear light panel with 6 lights on each side! In 1967, front fender turn signals indicators were added as well as a redesigned interior that eliminated the full length cabin console improving passenger entry & exit from either side of the vehicle.

We are delighted to offer this beautifully cared for 1967 Dodge Charger Fastback finished in factory, code correct Bright Red (PP1) and Premium Black Vinyl interior (S6X). This example features its original 1967 date-coded 383ci High Performance V8 producing a factory rated 325 horsepower & 425 lb. ft. of torque, console shift Torqueflite automatic transmission, and 3.23 Dana rear end! It comes very well equipped with factory options that include air conditioning (converted to R134a), power windows, AM Astrophonic radio, heavy duty power drum brakes, heavy duty alternator, power steering, electric clock, all tinted glass, front seat headrests, under hood insulation, full horn ring, variable speed windshield wipers, front & rear bumper guards, and trunk light! Upgrades include chrome-plated steel Magnum 500 wheels wrapped with redline tires!

Our Charger still wears a selling dealer’s plaque on the trunk recognizing Al West of Rolla, Missouri. Upon arrival here at the St. Louis Car Museum, we couldn’t help but notice the title was still in the name of Al West Chrysler-Dodge who is remains in operation today! This car was shipped new in November of 1966 and will come with a copy of the original dealer broadcast sheet, and a fully decoded worksheet directly from Dodge correctly identifying the original color & options. It was originally owned by a Vietnam serviceman that was killed in action, and this Charger stayed stored with his family from 1971 through 1991. It remains a wonderfully solid example! When acquired by Al West Chrysler, the exterior paint was refinished professionally by their shop during a restoration in November of 1991, along with all new interior upholstery. Mechanically, they rebuilt the cylinder heads with upgraded valve seats for today’s unleaded fuels, re-cored the original radiator, full ignition tune up, and fresh fluids. It stayed in their private collection until 1998, when it was then sold to another Missouri collector. The West brothers purchased the Charger back in December of 2010, added brand Redline tires new tires, new front seat cushions & padding, rebuilt both front headlight motors, restored the dash lighting system, converted the a/c to R134a, and repaired some issue with the power window operation. More recently in June 2013, the interior received a new complete interior carpet kit! It will also come with spare tire & changing tools, extra keys, service shop manual, and Charger specification booklet. It runs and drives excellently! The headlights remain fully functional as well as the air conditioning! Please call with any additional questions or schedule an opportunity to visit us in person!
