With a massive Hemi motor, a performance-tuned suspension and vintage-inspired good looks, the Challenger SRT8 392 is the range-topping model in Dodge's Challenger muscle car lineup. Though not quite as nimble as some rivals, the SRT is still quite enjoyable to exercise on backroads while also being a comfortable long-distance cruiser.

The heart of the SRT8 392 is a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 with 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. The latter figure is 90 lb-ft better than the Challenger's previous engine, adding a welcome kick in the pants to the straight line acceleration department. In fact, the SRT8 392 can scoot from a dead stop to 60 miles per hour in under five seconds.

If quarter mile races are more your thing, know that this coupe can run the quarter in mid 12's with the automatic transmission, or high 12's equipped with the row-it-yourself gearbox. New for the latest model is a launch-control system that spins the engine to optimal launch rpms, then manages wheelspin once underway for the quickest acceleration possible. Top speed is an impressive 182 in the manual and 175 with the automatic.

With all that power and displacement fuel economy is obviously not the primary concern of the vehicle's engineers, but it wasn't forgotten either. Both transmissions will return 14 city mpg, while the manual bests the automatic by one mpg for a highway rating of 23.

Speaking of transmissions, it should be known that the manual found in the 392 is no five-speed, but a six-speed TR-6060 Tremec unit with a dial-disc high performance clutch - the same one tested to the limits in the 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10.For those more interested in cruising than racing, the automatic comes in five-speed flavor that includes both "Normal" and "Sport" modes. Sport mode will keep the transmission in the gear a bit longer, maximizing power at the cost of efficiency.

Dodge upgraded the Challenger SRT8 392's suspension for the latest model year, adding an improved version of the active damping system that includes three different settings that either optimize on-road comfort or handling responses.

Keeping the SRT8 where it should be are either 20x9 forged aluminum in a seven-spoke design or 20x9 forged aluminum wheels with satin black painted pockets, either wrapped in Goodyear RSA all-season tires as standard. Optional are Goodyear F1 Supercar three-season tires that kick the performance up a notch at the expense of longevity and wet handling. Behind those wheels are 14.2-inch front and 13.8-inch rear vented and slotted rotors being grabbed by Brembo four-piston fixed calipers finished in red, of course.

Other model-specific exterior styling cues include '392 HEMI' badges, quad exhaust outlets, a new front spoiler and a body-painted rear decklid spoiler.

Despite a recent update, the cabin is slightly behind the times in terms of material quality and technology. There are plenty of hard plastic surfaces to be found, and the Uconnect infotainment system is a generation behind the slick unit found in newer Chrysler products. Still, there's a surprising amount of space inside - including enough room for adults to lounge in the rear seats - and the pistol-grip manual shifter adds an appealing retro touch.

Standard and Optional Features
Standard features include leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 276-watt Boston Acoustics sound system, a Uconnect CD/HDD/DVD entertainment system with a 6.5-inch touchscreen display, automatic climate control, Bluetooth smartphone connectivity and more.

SRT8 Core
A new SRT8 core model caters to budget-minded Mopar performance fans by delivering all of the standard coupe's performance but deleting some content (or substituting less expensive bits) to achieve a lower price.

The SRT8 Core features a unique blacked-out appearance, including a black grille, rear spoiler and"392" logos on the front fenders. Twenty-inch cast-aluminum wheels with black painted pockets and black Brembo brake calipers are also part of the package.

To help bring the price down, the Challenger SRT8 Core trades the leather upholstery of up-level SRT models for "Ballistic" cloth seating surfaces with dark slate gray bolsters and door panel inserts. There are also no fog lights, the HID headlights have been replaced with halogen units, and the adjustable suspension and been swapped out in favor of a single-mode Bilstein setup,

Occupant Safety
All Charger SRT8 models come standard with dual front, front side and side-curtain airbags in addition to a driver's knee airbag and traction and stability control systems.

Key Competitors
As the range-topping model in the Challenger lineup, the SRT8 392 competes against powerful rivals like the 650-horsepower
Ford Shelby GT500 and the 580-horsepower Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

As it stands, the 2013 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392, powered by the 6.4-liter Hemi V8 produces 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet. Clearly, it wouldn’t take much tweaking to take the 392 Hemi’s power past that of the Z/28. Add some unforgiving suspension, remove the radio, and add some lightweight components and SRT has a competent Camaro Z/28 competitor on its hands.

Watch this Dodge Viper get clawed to death

Tue, 07 Jan 2014

There's a scene in the James Bond movie, Casino Royale, where Daniel Craig's Agent 007 is captured by villain Le Chiffre, played by Mads Mikkelsen. Le Chiffre tortures Bond in a scene that is rather difficult to watch (especially for blokes) and impossible to describe on these digital pages (Google at your own risk). This video is the automotive equivalent of the Casino Royale torture scene.
It shows a Dodge Viper - a late, first-generation GTS judging by the center-exit exhausts - getting assaulted by a giant piece of heavy equipment. The large claw shows no mercy on the V10-powered sports car, rending its muscular curves into pieces and then running it over, just for good measure. It's a painful video to watch (and hear!), made worse because we don't know what the Viper did to deserve such a fate. About a third of the way through the video, the cameraman indicates that the man with the claw is a new operator from Chrysler, and it appears there may be some fire damage, but beyond that, we don't have much to go on.
Scroll down for the video but be warned, it isn't for the faint of heart.

Hypermiling a Ram 1500 EcoDiesel to 38.1 mpg

Fri, May 9 2014

You never quite know what Wayne Gerdes has up his sleeve. The man who coined the term hypermiling is always looking for adventurous ways to prove that anyone – even you... yes, you – can eke out more miles per gallon just by changing the way you drive. Saying that is easy. Proving it by going on outlandish cross-country drives is hard. But for Gerdes and his team of fuel economy fiends over at CleanMPG, hard is half the fun. Our latest adventure appeared, at first glance, to be nearly impossible. Which is why we always answer the phone when Gerdes calls. He likes to take journalists along on his drives, not only to try teach us how to hypermile but also to prove that we can be taught. The first time I 'helped' him and his team was when we got over 30 miles per gallon in a 2011 Ford F-150 XLT with the EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6. The EPA rated that truck with at just 16 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway. So, we'll count that trip as a success. Next up was a cross-country drive last fall in a trio of Audi TDI vehicles to prove that you don't need to drive extra slow to beat the EPA numbers. In fact, we made it from Los Angeles to New York City in just over 46 hours, cramped but not cranky. We had once again proven that how you drive is hugely important to your fuel usage. Our latest adventure appeared, at first glance, to be nearly impossible. The EPA says that the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel we would be driving gets just 22 combined mpg (19 city and 27 highway). Gerdes' idea was to drive it as far north from Houston, TX towards Detroit, MI as we could go on one tank. The day before we left, our itinerary got an extra stop. Instead of taking one of the official Shell Eco-marathon prototype vehicles to Detroit, it was decided to bring the winning diesel-powered prototype from the just-finished event to The Henry Ford Museum, where it had been arranged the car would be displayed. The winning car was built by a small team (just four students) from Sullivan High School in Sullivan, IN, who managed to beat a number of college teams with a score of 1,899.32 mpg. That target would be a bit out of reach for the Ram, but could we get 1,000 miles from the tank? Since the truck has a 26 gallon tank (officially, anyway), that would mean the EPA says we could only go 702 miles, assuming all highway driving. Could we make up 300 miles with careful driving? That spells both challenge and fun.

Weekly Recap: Ferrari plans to gradually increase production by 2019

Sat, Oct 17 2015

Ferrari has long been known for the exclusivity of its performance machines. It's on a different level than Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes. But as it transitions to a new era of independence from Fiat Chrysler, Ferrari is going to get a little less exclusive. It's by design, and it means a subtle, slow ramp-up of production – a move Ferrari believes will ensure its future by meeting growing demand in new markets. The strategy was detailed in SEC documents filed this month as part of the company's pending stock offering. The files reveal Ferrari will gradually increase shipments to about 9,000 units per year by 2019. This is a reversal of Ferrari's 2013 plans to cap production at 7,000 cars annually, which it hit on the nose that year. Ferrari shipments inched up to 7,255 in 2014, though that's down from 2012's record tally of 7,405. Ferrari is a vastly different operation than it was in 2013. Longtime chairman Luca di Montezemolo stepped down last fall, and FCA chief executive Sergio Marchionne has been overseeing the company since then. Its IPO has attracted high levels of attention from enthusiasts and investors. As expected, demand has reportedly outstripped the availability of the stock, which has an estimated offering price of $48 to $52 a share. Speaking of more Ferraris, the company revealed a limited-edition model this week called the F12tdf (shown above). Based on the F12 Berlinetta, the car is a salute to the Tour de France endurance auto race that Ferrari dominated in the 1950s and '60s. The V12 engine's output increases to 769 horsepower, while weight is cut by 243 pounds – allowing for a sprint to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds. Dramatic carbon-fiber elements and a radical redesign of the body panels give the F12 a more dramatic look. It will be limited to 799 units over the life of the car. If this is how Ferrari is increasing production, we're more than okay with the company's new strategy. OTHER NEWS & NOTES Tesla software unlocks Autopilot features Tesla released the latest version of its software for the Model S this week, which allows the all-electric sedan to drive in a semi-autonomous state called Autopilot. Tesla Version 7.0 enables the Model S to maintain lane position, change lanes by touching the turn signal, and manage the car's speed using an advanced, traffic-sensing cruise control. It also has a parallel parking feature, which searches for open spots and then parks your Tesla.
