In 2009, Dodge offered a "Challenger R/T Classic" model to celebrate the re-release of their iconic musclecar. The R/T Classic included 20" chrome retro-style wheels, a retro R/T Side Stripe, retro Script badging, and a limited number were available in B5 Blue, just like they were in 1970. Dodge manufactured a total of 31,500 Challengers in 2009 before Chrysler halted production due to the economy. Only 759 Challengers were produced in B5 Blue that year, and only 523 of those were the R/T Classic. That's just 1.66% of production. After their financing was secured and their marriage to Fiat was arranged, a few more Challengers may have rolled off the line, but it is believed that none of these were B5 Blue as their production run had already ended. Of the 523 B5 Blue R/T Classics produced, 244 came with manual transmissions and 279 came with automatics like this one. These cars aren't numbered like Dodge's other "Limited Edition" cars such as the Charger Daytona (of which thousands are produced). These are "Sleeper Collectibles". Very limited production insures long-term desirability, and this is a 1-in-279 car. And it's highly-optioned to boot. There's even an "Easter Egg" in the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) in the form of a resettable 0-60 MPH timer.

I purchased this car new in 2009 with the intention of pampering it for 25 years and being the old guy at the car auction with the one-owner, low-mileage, all-original HEMI Challenger. But a change in my priorities means *you* can be the one pulling the dust cover off of your two-owner, low-mileage, all-original HEMI Challenger. I have made absolutely no alterations to this car.  The front license plate holes are untapped. The windows aren't even tinted. It is exactly the way it came from the dealer except for gas, oil, and a set of MOPAR security lug nuts. There is a tiny pair of paint chips inside the door frame on the driver's side that were there when I purchased the car. I have not attempted to have them repaired. It's cosmetic and I considered them a birth mark of sorts. There's another tiny surface scratch in the clear coat on the driver's door. Its origin is unknown, but there's no damage to the door.

Since purchased, this car has been sheltered by a 4-layer NOAH Block-It custom-fit car cover under a CoverCraft 10' x 20' steel canopy with UV-blocking top. The canopy sits against a solid fence and underneath a shade tree, and the perimeter of the canopy frame is wrapped in hardware cloth to prevent any debris from being blown/thrown into the area. This car is not exposed to the elements except for temperature changes (much like a garage). It has only ever been hand-washed, top-to-bottom, since I've owned it. I purchased this car "new" with over 1,000 miles on it. The dealership manager couldn't resist adopting it for a month before selling it (thanks, buddy). At the time, it was one of only two B5 Blue Challengers for sale in the state of Georgia. I drove it to Illinois twice in 2010, but the rest of the miles are slow "neighborhood" miles - just enough to get it warmed up every couple of months and turn the wheels a bit. And maybe take a few pictures. The NOAH cover I originally bought in 2009 was getting a bit saggy and fuzzy, so I purchased a new one in 2014. It is included with the car in this auction.

B5 Blue is a legendary color, and a close look at the photos on this auction will tell you why. The base color is a beautiful shade of blue by itself, but when the sun hits it, it springs to life. The blue gets richer and it takes on a turquoise specular halo. Absolutely everyone compliments it. The value in this particular car lies not just in its beauty and rarity of color, but also its condition and mileage. I've looked on eBay, and I've seen a few B5 Blue Challengers selling for much less. They're driver cars, with higher mileage, add-on goodies, and a few dings here and there. If you want a pretty blue Challenger to drive around and park in a crowded parking lot, you'll have plenty of less expensive cars to choose from and I encourage you to do so. If you want to invest in a rare, original, unmolested Challenger which will most certainly appreciate in value if properly pampered, look no further. I've taken care of this car for the first five years. The rest is up to you. Don't miss your chance to be the second owner of this gorgeous and valuable collectible!

As an added bonus, I'm including a limited-production set of die-cast Challengers - a 1:24 scale 1970 HEMI Dodge Challenger R/T and a 1:18 scale 2009 HEMI Dodge Challenger, both in B5 Blue. These were a promotional item for Wix Filters back in 2009 and I couldn't resist buying them. Very few people own a B5 Blue Challenger. Fewer still own one with a matching collectible die cast scale model set. You can be one of them, but only if you submit the winning bid. ;-)

NOTE: Closer inspection reveals that there is a split in the window trim inside the driver's door, and the passenger window button on the driver's door is loose but functional. These are reflections of the build quality and not the result of overuse or abuse.

The Walter P. Chrysler Museum is shutting down permanently this December

Thu, Nov 10 2016

It is with disappointment that we report the Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills, MI, will be closed down permanently at the end of this year. The museum, which closed in 2012 after not being able to cover costs, was recently reopened to the public on alternating weekends starting in June, but Chrysler made the decision to shutter it altogether after its final day of operation on December 18, 2016. The reason for this is primarily because FCA needs more office space, and the company decided to convert the museum for that purpose. The the cars will be moved to storage after the closure, and they'll be shown at various events. However, they'll only be able to be seen together for two more weekends. Those weekends include those of November 19 and 20, and December 17 and 18. The museum will be open from 10 am to 4 pm on those days. If you can, we highly recommend visiting the museum. Adults get in for $10, seniors and retired FCA employees for $8, kids between 6 and 17 for $6, and kids under 5 for free. It also has some fantastic cars including concepts from the 1950s to the 2000s, oddball performance vehicles such as the Omni GLH-S, and of course plenty of fascinating history. And if it makes any difference to you, there's even a purple Plymouth Prowler you can sit in. Just make sure you don't wait too long to make up your mind about visiting. Related Video:

Dodge Durango Shaker concept: A 392 V8 in front of six Viper seats

Tue, Nov 1 2016

When done right, a parts-bin special can be a beautiful thing. This Dodge Durango Shaker concept for the 2016 SEMA show is one such vehicle, and it's easily our favorite Mopar debuting in Vegas. The key, of course, is pulling from the right bins. Take a tour and you'll see Charger, Challenger, and Viper pieces grafted onto this slick crossover. The featured special part is the big, 6.4-liter 392 Hemi V8 that's been dropped under the hood; it's sourced from the SRT Challenger and Charger where it makes 485 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque. With that in place, the fabricators cut a big hole in that hood for the Challenger's awesome optional shaker scoop. It wasn't an easy installation; it required a custom spacer for the intake to make sure everything lined up with the hole properly. View 17 Photos Apparently there were some Viper seats lying around, so six of them were stuck into this Durango. Makes sense. It does lose a bit of people-carrying capability as a result, since only two seats fit in each row, and the seats don't fold for extra cargo room. A Dodge spokesperson attested to the fact that all three rows are usable, if not totally comfortable. But then stock third-row seats aren't always that comfortable anyway. Seriously, though, Viper seats. We don't care how comfortable or usable the result is. Although you might not give it a second thought, even the fuel filler needed some special attention. This piece was also lifted from a Dodge Challenger, and it was taken along with the surrounding sheet metal. Because of the different orientation of the filler cover on the Challenger, the builders decided the easiest way to get it to fit was to chop the fuel filler section out and weld it onto the Durango. The designers also put a little blue Stig on the cover. And those are just the cool parts that were hard to install. This Durango features plenty of other slick details, like the custom bumpers, fender flares, and side skirts. Everything is painted B5 Blue with matte black and carbon accents all around. Up front, the bumper hides a pair of fog lights stolen from a Challenger Hellcat – and yes, they're the ones with intakes in the middle. The grille is also a custom piece, losing the standard crosshair design for better airflow. The fender flares cover up some seriously wide, 305-section tires at all four corners, which are hauled down by Hellcat brakes. The rear bumper bumper contains a stylish center-exit exhaust with dual tips.

Total auto recalls already on record pace in 2014

Tue, 08 Apr 2014

If you've noticed that there have been more recalls than usual this year, you may be on to something. According to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the US market is on pace to break a record for recalls. In 2013, 22 million cars were recalled. We're only a third of the way through 2014, though, and we've already halved that figure, with 11 million units recalled. That's wild.
Considering the past few months, it shouldn't be a surprise that General Motors is leading the charge, with six million of the 11 million units recalled coming from one of the General's four brands. Between truck recalls, CUV recalls and the ignition switch recall, 2014 hasn't been a great year for GM.
Other recall leaders include Nissan (one million Sentra and Altima sedans), Honda (900,000 Odyssey minivans), Toyota (over one million units in a few recalls), Volkswagen (150,000 Passat sedans), Chrysler (644,000 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs) and most recently, Ford (434,000 units, the bulk of which were early Ford Escape CUVs). So while it's been a bad year for GM so far, its competitors aren't doing too well, either.
