Fri, Nov 4 2016The custom-van craze was huge in California, back in the 1970s, and plenty of folks who would never have considered getting zonked on Acapulco Gold while listening to Elephant's Memory ended up buying Econolines and Beauvilles and Tradesmen with shag carpeting, bubble windows, and wild graphics. In fact, van buyers could get that stuff right from the factory. Most of those vans are gone now, but I found this used-up '78 Dodge in a self-service wrecking yard in California's Central Valley. Owners of custom vans felt strongly about their rides back in the Malaise Era. This one has the look of a vehicle that was used for beer-and-burned-meat-heavy tailgate parties at Oakland Raiders games. Such service is rough on a van. Dodge unveils Special Service Durango for government fleets
Fri, 18 Oct 2013Straight off its refresh, the Dodge Durango is slipping back into its dress blues and getting back to work. The 2014 Dodge Durango Special Service Vehicle boasts all the refinements and improvements that the refreshed, civilian-spec model received, most notably a 15-percent improvement in fuel economy.
Designed for police and fire departments, and as Chrysler's answer to the Ford Police Interceptor Utility and Chevrolet Tahoe PPV in the growing service SUV market, the Durango boasts a 600-mile range, thanks to the addition of an eight-speed automatic, available on both the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and 5.7-liter Hemi V8. Equipped with the 360-horsepower Hemi, the Durango SSV can tow up to 7,400 pounds (the V6 is limited to 6,200 pounds).
Police and fire department Durangos get a few special features over the civilian models. The electric systems are ruggedized, with a heavy duty battery and a 220-amp alternator in place, while the engine's water pump and oil cooler are both stronger. The brakes are tougher, and a load-leveling suspension has been fitted, too.
Dodge to reveal Hellcat-powered Challenger in Detroit?
Fri, 10 Jan 2014On top of all the other performance car debuts slated for next week's Detroit Auto Show, we might be able to add one more to the list - the new, supercharged Hellcat V8 from Chrysler. According to new reports, the rumored 640-horsepower mill is likely to cross the Motor City stage in the engine bay of a Dodge Challenger.
As AllPar points out, though, there may be more news than just the fire-breathing engine. While we've seen spy photos of the Hellcat testing under the hood of the current Challenger, there's a very fair chance that it won't arrive until the muscle car is refreshed later this year. The question now is whether that refresh will be shown off alongside the new engine in Detroit, or if it'll be saved, perhaps for the New York Auto Show.
Other details dug up by AllPar include potential transmissions for the supercharged engine - the Mopar-minded site is expecting an eight-speed automatic or a Tremec six-speed manual. Prices, meanwhile, could be in the same elevated range as the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, at $70,000 to $80,000.
