The TRUCK that started it all!  Here's your chance to own an immaculate Generation IV Ram 1500 that paved the way to the current and first ever BACK-TO-BACK MOTOR TREND Truck of the Year!  This exceptionally clean truck is waiting for a new home!  I'm selling my 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport Crew Cab RWD HEMI (metallic black crystal) because it's time to move to a different vehicle since my family has grown by two (yes, twins!). This truck was purchased new in May 2010 from Boerne Dodge in Boerne, TX. It is accident free, never been smoked in, never towed and has only been used to haul 4-5 loads (wood) in the bed since I bought it.  The truck was optioned out with the black leather-trimmed bucket seats, rear park assist, 3.92 axle ratio with anti-spin differential, power sunroof, 32-gallon fuel tank, Uconnect GPS, back-up camera, power sliding rear window, and Class IV hitch. Sticker was $44,745. All maintenance has been performed at Ancira Dodge in San Antonio, TX. I have rotated and balanced the tires every 4k miles, changed the oil every 5k miles with Mobil 1 full synthetic ble, and kept up with all scheduled maintenance. The truck only has 51k miles on it and drives the same way as the day I bought it. Fantastic!

The truck also includes:

  •        Mopar Challenger-style hood
  •        Tinted windows (front and back with max LEGAL tint in TX)
  •        Mopar ipod cable with Apple iPhone 5 lightning cable adapter
  •        6” Suspension lift
  •        20” Fuel Wheels w/ 35” x 12.50” Nitto Mud Grapplers
  •        Cab Length Mopar Black Tubular Side-Steps
  •        BakFlip bed cover
  •       Projector headlights
  •        Recon LED taillights and third brake light
  •        Leather seats w/ AC & heat controls built into seats
  •        Line-X spray in bed liner
  •     Superchips Flashpaq programmer with transmission kit
  •        Pioneer Z130 w/navigation, SIRIUS|XM and DVD (bypass to work while out of park)
  •       Two 13” JL Audio TW5 subwoofers – custom fiberglass box
  •        Two JL Audio amps – 300/4 and 500/1 with dash-mounted bass control
  •        JL Audio ZR650 components – front
  •        Focal 165 KR2 components – rear
  •        Viper Smart Start alarm (app controlled) with tilt sensors, glass break sensors, and motion sensors
  •    Magnaflow muffler w/dual exhaust (5" chrome tips) - Aggressive and strong sound, not overbearing
    •        Custom made Ram emblems on the front grille and tailgate
    •        Custom made gear shifter for the Texas enthusiast

I have babied this truck and washed it frequently!  It has been garage kept at home and parked in a garage while at work.  It has no leaks, mechanical, electrical or other issues associated with drivability or function. This truck is in excellent condition and was just detailed inside and out. There are a few small scratches to point out. There are two scratches on the hood and one on the rear passenger door that can be fixed cheaply. You will see from the pictures that you cannot see these unless you are up close on the vehicle.  Other than these minor imperfections, the truck is beautiful and extremely well taken care of.

The tires on the truck are in great condition (all 4) on  10/04/2012 and have less than 12k miles on them. These tires are the TOP rated tire for this size/application as you can see on Tirerack.com.  These tires are very quiet on the highway going 70. Most trucks with 35s and a 6 inch lift (professionally installed at Espino’s Tires and Wheels in San Antonio) ride loud and rough. Not this one. I constantly get great feedback on the ride quality. Check out Nitto’s website and other sources on the web for great expert and user reviews. You're getting top rated tires with VERY LITTLE USE. Cost of the tires, wheels, and 6 inch suspension lift was $5,100.

The audio system in this truck is incredible. The doors and roof have had Dynamat installed for soundproofing. The Pioneer z130 with Navigation and SiriusXMalso features Bluetooth calling and streaming. There is a bypass installed that let’s you control the navigation and DVD player while in drive. The backup camera is aftermarket and has a much higher resolution than the OEM camera has. There is a bass control knob installed in the dash to quickly control the loudness of the bass. The sound is crisp, sharp, clear, and responsive. Bluetooth streaming and iPod/iPhone hook-ups make listening to your favorite music simple and easy. I have also installed a hard wire for an Escort radar detector that mounts above the rear view mirror. There is a mute button installed on the dash, barely noticeable. There is over $6k in this audio system alone and everything was professionally installed. Radar not included, but can be purchased for an additional $350. All OEM parts that have been upgraded are included in the purchase.

I will make the truck available for anyone wanting to perform an inspection.  Ebay provides free vehicle reports via Experian's AutoCheck service and you can feel free to pull a CarFax report as well if you'd like.  Ebay also allows you to schedule an inspection through them.  If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask!

The KBB private party values for this truck are as follows:

    EXCELLENT: $27,587

    VERY GOOD: $26,787

    GOOD: $25,987

    FAIR: $23,887

I have started this auction at $27,000 with NO RESERVE and a Buy-it-Now price of $30,000.  TONS of extras on this truck, hate to get rid of it. Good luck and happy bidding!

A car writer's year in new vehicles [w/video]

    Thu, Dec 18 2014

Christmas is only a week away. The New Year is just around the corner. As 2014 draws to a close, I'm not the only one taking stock of the year that's we're almost shut of. Depending on who you are or what you do, the end of the year can bring to mind tax bills, school semesters or scheduling dental appointments. For me, for the last eight or nine years, at least a small part of this transitory time is occupied with recalling the cars I've driven over the preceding 12 months. Since I started writing about and reviewing cars in 2006, I've done an uneven job of tracking every vehicle I've been in, each year. Last year I made a resolution to be better about it, and the result is a spreadsheet with model names, dates, notes and some basic facts and figures. Armed with this basic data and a yen for year-end stories, I figured it would be interesting to parse the figures and quantify my year in cars in a way I'd never done before. The results are, well, they're a little bizarre, honestly. And I think they'll affect how I approach this gig in 2015. {C} My tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015 it'll be as high as 73. Let me give you a tiny bit of background about how automotive journalists typically get cars to test. There are basically two pools of vehicles I drive on a regular basis: media fleet vehicles and those available on "first drive" programs. The latter group is pretty self-explanatory. Journalists are gathered in one location (sometimes local, sometimes far-flung) with a new model(s), there's usually a day of driving, then we report back to you with our impressions. Media fleet vehicles are different. These are distributed to publications and individual journalists far and wide, and the test period goes from a few days to a week or more. Whereas first drives almost always result in a piece of review content, fleet loans only sometimes do. Other times they serve to give context about brands, segments, technology and the like, to editors and writers. So, adding up the loans I've had out of the press fleet and things I've driven at events, my tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015, it'll be as high as 73. At one of the buff books like Car and Driver or Motor Trend, reviewers might rotate through five cars a week, or more. I know that number sounds high, but as best I can tell, it's pretty average for the full-time professionals in this business.

Dodge idles Viper production again at Conner Avenue

    Mon, 07 Jul 2014

You've got to hand it to Dodge for having the gumption to put the original Viper into production in the first place. It was, after all, much more of an emotional decision than a practical one, and a move which saw the first production V10 engine placed in a road car - long before the advent of the Lamborghini Gallardo, Audi R8, Porsche Carrera GT or Lexus LFA, not to mention the other Ford, BMW and Volkswagen Group models that used such engines.
It's now been 22 years since the first Viper entered production and the Viper still rolls on several generations later, but we're sad to say that courageous decision has not always been met with overwhelming sales success. In fact parent Chrysler was forced to idle the Conner Avenue plant where the Viper is made back in April due to slow sales. And while production resumed again as planned on June 23, it apparently didn't do the trick.
As a result, Chrysler corporate communications chief Shawn Morgan revealed to Autoblog that the assembly line has been shut down again for another two weeks. The line was up and running for nearly two full work weeks from June 23 until the holiday weekend that started on Thursday, July 3. But instead of coming back online today as planned, it's been idled again for the weeks of July 7 and 14. That means it will be July 21, at the earliest, before the serpentine supercars start slithering down the assembly line at Conner Avenue again. Once it does, however, production is set to resume at the same pace it was before the shutdown.

Chrysler extending production of current Dodge Avenger, Jeep Wrangler, Grand Caravan

    Wed, 24 Jul 2013

Are you hesitant to pull the trigger on a brand new Dodge Avenger in hopes that a new one will be coming? Well, don't hold your breath. According to The Detroit News, Chrysler will be extending production of the current Avenger sedan through the end of 2015.
Originally, we heard that the company would kill the Avenger to better focus its midsize sedan efforts on the Chrysler 200 replacement. But then new reports stated there would indeed be an Avenger successor, and that we could see it as early as next January. This Detroit News report cites supplier sources confirming the extension of Avenger production, though Chrysler has not released an official statement on the matter.
These same suppliers say that the current Jeep Wrangler will live on through mid-2018 - that's right, another five years. The Detroit News reports that a replacement for the iconic, go-anywhere Jeep was due in mid-2016.
