1974 Dodge D100 old shop truck with awesome patina

Well, here is a Dodge D100 shop truck for sale.  It’s so ugly that it’s beautiful.  It really has that patina that people seem to be looking for in a shop truck or rat-rod.  She is a reliable driver – just bump the key and go.  She gets a lot of attention – if you want stealthy, this isn’t for you.

The truck runs and drives well with its 225 slant six engine and automatic trans.  The brakes are power assisted front disc and rear drums and I would not hesitate to fire it up and drive it around the local community here.  I drive it to and from the auto parts store and other local errands.  Be aware that the tires are getting old and I am seeing cracks, so before any substantial journey, it really should be tended to.  The set of 4 Cragar SS wheels are straight and have a matching patina.  Note also that the windshield is starting to fog, so that should be in your plans.  It has new brake lines.

The dash gauges (fuel and DC ammeter) work fine and the previous owner added a 3-way gauge setup under the dash including oil pressure, water temp and volts – and these work well, too.  The truck runs cool and constant temp and oil pressure.  The dash is in ugly shape and there is no radio and the seat is covered with a simple cover since the original seat upholstery is falling apart – perfect.  The horn button is a replacement and is mounted on the lower dash area – and yes, it works.

Technically, she could use some attention.  The frame rails are in good shape – could use a wire brush, and it should get floor pans on both sides.  I have 2 pieces of sheetmetal in the floors now and I have seen the replacement panels as cheap as $34 here on ebay.  I drive it as-is.  Obviously, there is some rust here and there, but that’s what gives it it’s character.  Operationally, the headlights, taillights, blinkers and even the reverse lights and tag light works.  The right turn signal – you have to hold the lever in position – I presume it should get a switch at some point, but it still works.  The windshield wipers do not – the motor works, but the wiper linkage needs attention; you can see the passenger wiper sitting on the floor in one of the pictures.  The bed was originally wood plank (and you can see this from the under-pictures) but has a piece of diamond plate in the bed now.

She has a clear MD title – and in some weird twist the MVA years ago had titled it as a 1970!  So, don’t be surprised when you see that on the title – the VIN matches the door, the lock pillar and the title – all matching.  The VIN decode indicates it is a 1974 model.

As the auction states, this is cash only (other than the PayPal deposit).  If you want to pay for the entire truck via PayPal, you can – but that requires that you add the PayPal fee that would be charged to me – about 3% additional.  It can be picked up from my home in East Baltimore.  If you want it shipped, I can meet your assigned shipping truck locally, no problem.

2014 Dodge Journey Crossroad

Thu, 17 Jul 2014

Watchers of the auto industry will notice a theme among the formerly bankrupted American automakers, General Motors and Chrysler. There are the post-bankruptcy vehicles, and the pre-bankruptcy vehicles. The former, in the case of Chrysler, include the Jeep Grand Cherokee, as well as the 200 and 300. For GM, there's the Cadillac ATS, Chevrolet Impala and Buick Encore, among others. These vehicles have the freshest styling, with sharp exteriors and well-crafted interiors, as well as advanced powertrains and well-sorted chassis.
As for the pre-bankruptcy vehicles, they tend to be easy to spot. Most suffer from inferior driving dynamics, cheaper interiors, poorer fuel economy and often homely looks (we know, there were some decent cars before the bankruptcy, but they were pretty heavily outweighed by the bad ones). Think late, last-generation Chevrolet Impala or Chrysler 200. Increasingly, though, we're seeing vehicles that split the balance between pre- and post-bankruptcy. Vehicles like the Dodge Journey.
The Journey debuted in 2007 as a 2008 model year vehicle, meaning it should fall into the latter category. But heavily breathed upon in 2011, it now enjoys a new, 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, a big, critically acclaimed touchscreen display and in the case of today's tester, a new-for-2014 Crossroad spec.

Chrysler recalls small number of 2013-2014 cars and trucks over engine debris

Thu, 12 Dec 2013

Chrysler is recalling a small number cars over issues with their 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines. The recall, which affects 522 examples of its 2013 Dodge Avenger and Chrysler 200 models, as well as 2014 Jeep Compass and Patriot CUVs has to do with potential debris in the balance shaft bearings.
The abrasive stuff can cause the oil pressure to drop, which could lead to the engine stalling or outright failure. This situation could at best leave drivers stranded and at worst lead to a crash.
Chrysler will begin notifying owners, who will need to report in to have the balance shaft module replaced. All repairs are naturally free of charge. Scroll down for the bulletin from NHTSA.

It ain't easy keeping a Hellcat steady at 170 mph on ice

Mon, Mar 28 2016

The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat you see hit the ice at Arsunda Speed Weekend in Sweden, over two hours north of Stockholm. It's said to be bone stock, save for the studded tires that help it grip on ice. But it apparently takes more than some steel studs and a lead foot to keep it pointed the right way. Just look at how much driver Alx Danielsson has to saw at the wheel to keep the Hellcat from veering off course. Fortunately he seems to have the chops to do so, being not only a native of Sweden (and therefor imbued from birth with otherworldly abilities to drive on ice) but also having won the highly competitive Formula Renault 3.5 Series championship back in 2006. In the end Danielsson hit a top speed in excess of 170 miles per hour, touted as some sort of record, however unofficial (and specific to Dodge Challengers). That's a fair bit shy of the 205 mph that Bentley achieved in the Continental Supersports, but while that model had slightly less power than the Hellcat, it did have the benefit of all-wheel drive – something that could make all the difference in these kinds of slippery conditions.
