The
highest performance police car in America, the Dodge Charger, was re-engineered
for the 2011 model year. The usual “keyless enter-and-go” system has proximity entry and a push-button start “with police strategy.” Standard features on pursuit cars included steering wheel mounted audio controls, UConnect voice command, power six way driver and manual front passenger seat, dual power outlets, one USB outlet in the center stack, and dual zone a/c. For durability, police got 18 inch steel wheels.
The pursuit car still had a column shifter, but it was redesigned for a more natural feel; it is now “in a vertical plane, rather than a rotational arc,” according to Police Fleet Manager.
Dodge Charger Pursuit protects officers with uncompromising safety and security equipment, including standard advanced multistage driver and front-passenger air bags, seat-mounted side-thorax air bags, supplemental side-curtain air bags for front and rear outboard passengers, driver’s knee bag, tire-pressure monitoring and more. The uni-body has more high-strength steel than before, for higher safety.
The four wheel heavy duty antilock brakes were part of the stability control system, with special programming to allow full or part-operation function; rain brake support, hill start assist, and ready alert braking are all included. (Rain brake support moves the calipers closer to the rotors when the wipers are active, keeping the rotors dry). The pursuit car also had a unique performance suspension, with load-levelling intelligence via Monroe Nivomat rear shocks.
Visibility has been improved via narrower, thinner pillars, lower rear-view mirrors (which were also moved forward), and moving the windshield top back by 3 1/2 inches.
The Dodge Charger Pursuit was available for ordering through fleet purchase only. As in the past, a stealth mode shuts off some interior lights and dims others, keeping an unobtrusive red dome light on, providing enough light for “official business” while remaining dark on the outside, and unseen by speeders. Another police item is the ability to deactivate rear doors and windows.
Law and Order wrote that Chrysler made changes to the seats to improve comfort, benchmarking the Toyota Avalon and Lexus LS460: ...most seats start out with a stamped steel seat bottom. To that, different layers, thicknesses and densities of foam are added. That means seat comfort comes only from the foam layers. The most comfortable seats, however, start out as a tube frame with a nylon web seat the bottom. And that is what the new Charger has.
The 2011 Dodge Charger also had better foam layers, with the webbing covered with a layer of firm foam, then a layer of memory foam. For the police, pressure point mapping was used to reduce “hot spots” for those wearing police-duty belts, and improved the seat fabric.
The front fascia was also redesigned to make it easier for up fitters; instead of having to remove the entire front clip, including headlights, the front clip can now be easily removed, sans headlights, using easily found fasteners (via an access panel above, and under the air dam below). The new grille also increases airflow into the radiator at idle, and is cheaper to replace. First generation push bumpers, interior partitions, and center consoles will, however, fit — and will not be hit by the redesigned side airbags.

Brits recreate iconic Bullitt chase scene
Tue, 13 May 2014Recreating the famous chase scene from Bullitt has become almost an art form in its own right. We've seen it done in a music video, with scale models and even in commercials. There are few films that are as defined by a single scene as the 1968 classic. Even if you don't know a single beat of the plot, the Highland Green Ford Mustang racing a Dodge Charger through the hilly streets of San Francisco is famous. It's so well known that the Silverstone Classic has created a homage to promote its celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Mustang at this year's event in July.
Filmed around the famous UK circuit, the short film generally gets the key points of the scene right. It even has a green Volkswagen Beetle that keeps reappearing, as in the movie. Unfortunately, its Steve McQueen stand-in looks a little too old for the role. While the video shortens the chase considerably, it's still great to see these '60s behemoths leaning and sliding around the track. Thu, Jan 8 2015What's the one thing no car can have too much of? Here's a hint – it's not power. It's not efficiency, either, or technology, or even safety. It's exclusivity. It's one reason Rolls-Royce has become a legend building absolutely bespoke motor vehicles, and it's the reason Dodge, of all companies, is offering a new GTC trim level for its Viper supercar. Now, you might be asking what's so special and exclusive about a trim level? Well, in the Viper GTC's case, it gives owners access to a catalog of 8,000 shades of paint for the exterior, 24,000 "hand-painted" custom stripe patterns, 10 different wheel options, 16 interior trims and no fewer than six aerodynamic packages. That results in 25 million different configurations for the 645-horsepower snake. Most shockingly, the customization choices come at no additional cost on the GTC model. And it's only the start. Ordering a GTC will enroll customers in a unique VIP program called Viper Concierge, which according to Dodge, "offers an exclusive point of contact throughout the custom Viper build process." In other words, buyers will be given the means to stay right on top of their car's production, through the 140-to-160-hour painting process, which itself will be fully documented with pictures and through a mobile-friendly website, to the actual construction of their GTC. The Concierge process will start with the ordering stage, which will include Dodge sending customers a paint chip showing the owner's custom choosing, which they can confirm or refuse. Shortly thereafter, Dodge will send buyers a 1:18-scale "speed-form" replica in their chosen custom colors, once again to confirm or deny the build. Once the buyer's color and option selection is locked-in, that car becomes a one-of-one Viper for that year – no other buyer will be permitted to build a Viper to the same specifications. The concierge service also grants access to the Viper Ambassador Owner's Portal, where orderers can track their car's build process, receive weekly updates and share their excitement with (jealous) friends and family. And once the car is complete, it will be fitted with a custom dash plaque identifying its bespoke provenance – the owner can choose to have their name put on the badge, the car's nickname, or whatever they wish (Dodge will also ship each Viper with a second blank plate to include if the original owner sells the car).
Which electric cars can charge at a Tesla Supercharger?

Now, more and more automakers are switching to Tesla's charging tech. But there are a few things non-Tesla drivers need to know about charging at a Tesla station. A lot has hit the news cycle in recent months with regard to electric car drivers and where they can and can't plug in. The key factor in all of that? Whether automakers switched to Tesla's charging standard. More car companies are shifting to Tesla's charging tech in the hopes of boosting their customers' confidence in going electric. Here's what it boils down to: If you currently drive a Tesla, you can keep charging at Tesla charging locations, which use the company's North American Charging Standard (NACS), which has long served it well. The chargers are thinner, more lightweight and easier to wrangle than other brands. If you currently drive a non-Tesla EV, you have to charge at a non-Tesla charging station like that of Electrify America or EVgo — which use the Combined Charging System (CCS) — unless you stumble upon a Tesla charger already equipped with the Magic Dock adapter. For years, CCS tech dominated EVs from everyone but Tesla. Starting next year, if you drive a non-Tesla EV (from the automakers that have announced they'll make the switch), you'll be able to charge at all Supercharger locations with an adapter. And by 2025, EVs from some automakers won't even need an adaptor. Here's how to charge up, depending on which EV you have: Ford 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E. Tim Levin/Insider Ford was the earliest traditional automaker to team up with Tesla for its charging tech. Current Ford EV owners — those driving a Ford electric vehicle already fitted with a CCS port — will be able to use a Tesla-developed adapter to access Tesla Superchargers starting in the spring. That means that, if you own a Mustang Mach-E or Ford F-150 Lightning, you will need the adapter in order to use a Tesla station come 2024. But Ford will equip its future EVs with the NACS port starting in 2025 — eliminating the need for any adapter. Owners of new Ford EVs will be able to pull into a Supercharger station and juice up, no problem. General Motors Cadillac Lyriq. Cadillac GM will also allow its EV drivers to plug into Tesla stations.
