OVERVIEW. Welcome. Up for sale is my complete, original 1970 Dodge Charger 500 SE. I bought this car here in PA about 3 hours north of me in August of 2006. My father and I have spent countless hours over the past seven years working toward restoring this worthy classic, but I have lost interest as I have other classic projects waiting and only limited funds and time. The winning bidder will benefit from the fact that the rear frame rails and passenger's side torsion bar area have been repaired with oem steel frame rails from a 1973 Satellite donor car. As the pictures show, much hard work has been completed but some panel replacement and/or repair is still needed. You will save thousands of dollars finishing this car over buying a stripped shell. Yes, many components need restored, but at least they are present, since original parts can be hard to find for a classic Mopar such as the Charger. The winning bidder will receive all additional parts I have purchased over the years for the car as well. For example, I bought an original tic-toc-tach (pictured in-dash) for the car as well as a better hood, rear bumper, side marker lights front and rear etc. The lesser condition parts original to the car are also included and could be sold or kept as spares. PLEASE NOTE that the car is complete with the exception of the original AM radio and chrome trim for the vinyl roof, including the SE badges, and taillight panel. These pieces were missing when I bought the car in 2006 and I have yet to purchase them. All the parts not seen in the pictures, such as the interior trim pieces, side marker lights, hood turn signal indicator lights, back up lights etc. are included and in crates in the back of the car (pictured). The winning bidder will be pleased with the level of completeness of my Charger. The winning bidder will get a much more manageable project than my father and I started with, but the rarity, timeless styling and following of the '68-'70 Charger make them worthwhile projects in any condition. There just aren't enough of them to go around anymore as many rusted away and were crushed. Do not miss this opportunity to own one of the most gorgeous and desirable American cars ever made.
GENERAL VEHICLE INFORMATION. This 1970 Dodge Charger 2 door sport coupe is a 500 model (XP VIN) with the rare A47 SE (Special Edition) option package. This car had the following options from the factory: A01 Charger Light Package, A04 Charger Radio Group, A47 Special Edition Package, B51 Brakes-Power, C16 Console with Woodgrain Panel, CRXA Leather Bucket- Charcoal & Black, D31 Automatic Transmission with 318 2bbl., D51 2.76:1 Ratio Axle, E44 318 2bbl., EF8 Paint- Dark Green Metallic, G11 Solex Tinted Windows- All Windows, G33 Mirror- Outside LH Remote Type Chrome, H51 Air Conditioning, J55 Undercoating, S77 Power Steering, V1F Vinyl Roof- Green, W23 Wheels- Chrome Road 14" with trim ring plus all standard Charger 500 options/option codes.
DRIVETRAIN. This Charger retains its original, numbers matching 318 V8 and 904 three-speed automatic transmission. The rear end is correct to the 318/904 combination and is a 2.71 open rear. This Charger, with the 500 SE trim, was built more as a stylish luxury cruiser rather than a muscle car, but its engine bay will gladly accommodate any of Mopars hearty big blocks, such as a 383, 440 or the 426 HEMI. However, do not discount the original 318 in it, as a previous owner freshened the engine in the early 1990s and did a good job of it. The engine is pushing a good deal more horsepower than stock. It has an Edelbrock intake manifold, headers and a large CFM GM Rochester carburetor as well as likely internal work, such as a slightly hotter cam, likely Edelbrock as well, but I am unsure of this. It is strong and runs more like a 340 or 383 two barrel than a stock '70 318. I would estimate horsepower at 275-300 at the crank, but this is just an educated guess. It may be rather less or more; I have never put it on a dyno. There are lots of possibilities to liven up this car, such as trading out the automatic for a four speed and/or going with a more aggressive rear. A 3.55 posi would be a nice balanced rear for this car. If I were to keep the car, I would swap out the rear and put a shift kit in the automatic and have a mild cruiser until I had the time and money to go big block with a beefier tranny and rear. During my ownership, I have replaced many minor parts such as spark plugs, plug wires, ballast resistor (s), voltage regulator (s), kept fresh fluids (oil and coolant) in the engine and transmission, power steering, brakes etc. As described earlier, note that this car does run and yard drive but it has been off the road since 1993 and will need gone over mechanically as well. The engine needs a fresh tune-up and the transmission is slow to engage from sitting for 20 years. The car is being run through a fuel line to the pump at the front of the car since it will need fuel line work, and I would install a new fuel tank to be safe. The gas tank on the car looks decent but it is always better to replace them.
BODY AND UNDERCARRIAGE. As mentioned earlier, all frame repairs have been completed. Please see the pictures to verify. This was the area that I addressed before moving forward with my project. This Charger will not need any frame work and has a solid frame from end to end. The body will still need some repairs and panel replacement to include: the passenger's side floor pan, rocker panels (both sides), a full trunk floor pan, passenger's side inner wheel well work and quarter panel installation, rear valance and corners, considerable work around the rear window and minor patching to the front fenders. During my ownership, the following body work has been completed: a new driver's side floor pan, all driver's side inner wheel well work and quarter panel installation ('68 Charger quarter skin with the correct cut made for '70 marker lights and the small round hole is to be filled), both front fenders have been blasted to bare metal and primered with patching and dent removal started but not complete. The doors are very solid with only a small area of rust on the corner of the passenger's side door edge. The hood currently on the car was purchased at Carlisle and was more solid than the one on the car when I bought it but we still welded patches on the hood to strengthen it and address a few areas of rust.
INTERIOR. The interior is the correct, original SE interior with leather-trimmed bucket seats and woodgrain trim. The seats are in very good condition for their age with great foam and only minimal ripping. They will need recovered though. The headliner has been pulled out as it was sagging and will need replaced. I do have all the rods and clips for the headliner. This car retains its original dash which is in excellent condition.I do not even see any cracks on the dash pad. The console is also intact with some cracking of the plastic. All gauges are present, including the original tic-toc-tach I purchased for the car.
GENERAL INFORMATION/PAYMENT METHODS/COMPLETING THE SALE. The car has a clear PA title in hand and ready to transfer to the new owner. The title has actual mileage at 14,636. Although possible, my opinion would be that the car has "turned over"and true mileage is 114,636 miles. The winning bidder will also be given all receipts for the car that I have filed since purchase in 2006.
SUMMATION OF THE PROS AND CONS.
PROS. Frame work complete/solid frame. Body work/panel replacement well in progress. Clear PA title (VIN on door and dash match title. No issues as is common with old cars.) Complete car. Original interior and drivetrain. Runs and yard drives (it does have brakes, steering etc). Extra original parts. Rare car. Worth big bucks restored. Will always have a strong following.
CONS. Still needs body panel replacement, bodywork and paint. Needs an overall restoration both mechanically and cosmetically. Much of the wiring has been corrected to original from decades of hacking and poor work by previous owners but needs finished. The headlight covers need adjusted/repaired. The original fender tag has rusted away and the build sheet is mostly eaten away by mice (I have one surviving corner showing the W23 Magnum 500 wheel code). It is an original A/C car, but I removed the compressor and related components.
VERY IMPORTANT PAYMENT DETAILS. PLEASE READ. The winning bidder will be responsible for a $1,000 deposit to be made by PayPal within 48 hours of the auction's end. This deposit will hold the car for up to 14 days/2 weeks. On day 15, unless other arrangements have been made, the sale will be null and void with the buyer receiving back $500 of the $1000 deposit. In other words, the deposit will be split in equal increments (of fifty percent) if the winning bidder cannot complete the sale or backs out of the sale. No exceptions. The car will then be put back up for sale at my discretion. The balance of the final/winning bid price will be paid to me in CASH (no exceptions) at which time we will go to a notary and the car will be signed over to the new owner. The buyer will then take possession of the vehicle. The winning bidder is responsible for coming here to Central Pennsylvania and picking up the car and completing payment and title transfer. I do not have a truck and trailer available at this time, so you must bring your own and take the vehicle on the day of full payment and title transfer. Dodge shows can-do attitude with grand Can'avan sculpture
Fri, 01 Nov 2013There are lots of ways to celebrate an important birthday, and all of them are well deserved. You can throw a big party, buy yourself something nice, or - if you're the altruistic type - do something for others in need. The latter is how Chrysler has opted to mark the 30th anniversary of its Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country.
Together with hunger-advocacy organization Canstruction, the Chrysler Foundation has built a full-scale replica of the Grand Caravan out of 30,000 food cans in the square at the corner of Yonge and Dundas in Toronto, a ways down the highway from where the real vans are built in Windsor. The sculpture was built over the course of 10 hours by 30 volunteers and was displayed earlier this week.
Now the installation is being taken down, and the cans of food are being donated to the Daily Bread Food Bank, which will assemble them into 2,000 food baskets to be distributed to those in need through its network of 200 food banks across the Canadian metropolis. Cars.com runs 11-second quarter with Dodge Charger Hellcat
Mon, Jun 1 2015The Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat and its Challenger sibling are two of the heroes of the modern performance world. With a headline-grabbing 707 horsepower from a supercharged 6.2-liter V8, their output even shames many supercars. But how quick can one really cover a quarter mile? Cars.com recently decided to find out by taking a Charger Hellcat to the drag strip to see if the sedan lived up to Dodge's 11-second claims. The results were quite impressive. After 13 quarter-mile runs of adjusting variables like the tire pressures and the car's various electronic aids, the Charger Hellcat managed a pass in 11.03 seconds at 126.61 mph – the pinnacle result of the day. This car was mechanically stock and wore the optional Pirelli P Zero tires. According to Cars.com, other quick sprints reached 11.09 seconds and 11.1 seconds, which even beat the site's 11.41-second best from a Challenger Hellcat last year. Getting the Hellcat's prodigious power down without losing traction was a challenge, even on the summer tires. Cars.com thought it had a run that could have dropped below 11 seconds, but then the wheels spun. Using the factory-recommended pressures, the Charger Hellcat was no still slouch with an 11.27-second time recorded, but taking things down to 25 psi proved the quickest at the strip. We already knew that the Charger Hellcat was a wonderful vehicle for eating up huge gulps of asphalt at high speeds and could verify its 204-mile-per-hour top speed (quite a bit faster, incidentally, than the Ferrari California T's 196 mph top-speed). Apparently, the 11-second quarter-mile claim is just as accurate. Also, for any curious owners, the Cars.com story divulges many of the tweaks required to reach this seriously quick time.
