Junkyard Gem: 1978 Dodge Tradesman Custom Van

The custom-van craze was huge in California, back in the 1970s, and plenty of folks who would never have considered getting zonked on Acapulco Gold while listening to Elephant's Memory ended up buying Econolines and Beauvilles and Tradesmen with shag carpeting, bubble windows, and wild graphics. In fact, van buyers could get that stuff right from the factory. Most of those vans are gone now, but I found this used-up '78 Dodge in a self-service wrecking yard in California's Central Valley. Owners of custom vans felt strongly about their rides back in the Malaise Era. This one has the look of a vehicle that was used for beer-and-burned-meat-heavy tailgate parties at Oakland Raiders games. Such service is rough on a van. The Dodge Demon is leaked in Fast 8 video with Vin Diesel

It's only week two of the twelve-part Dodge Demon teaser roll out, and it already appears the metaphorical Hellcat is out of the bag. A YouTube video featuring Vin Diesel discussing The Fate of the Furious ( Fast 8) has what are almost certainly two Dodge Challenger Demons parked right in the background. So much for three months worth of build up and mystique. The two cars in the video appear to have the new logo affixed to the fender, right where the current Hellcat logo resides. In addition, the wheels and the massive hood scoop both appear to be the same relative shape as the ones briefly flashed in the latest teaser video. While we can't be 100 percent certain this is really a Demon, all the evidence points to yes. Even if this spoiled Dodge's plans, actually seeing the car here makes us even more excited for the full reveal. We still don't know all the final specs, save that it'll be 200 lbs lighter, so there is still some mystery to be had. The Challenger and Charger Hellcat twins, some of the most brazen and brutish machines currently on the road, were already cranked up to 11. The Demon, with its wide fender flares and comically large hood scoop looks makes the standard car look tame by comparison. We can't wait. Before Jay Leno, this 1970 Dodge Charger was a SEMA star

When Jay Leno drives an awesome car, enthusiasts take note, and this week the internet blew up over the 1970 Dodge Charger resto-mod that starred in a recent Garage episode. But you might not remember: this strapping Charger, called "Tantrum," was one of the highlights of the SEMA Show in Las Vegas last fall. Here's another look at a true Mopar monster. The power: Yep, Tantrum has 1,650 horsepower. That's more than two Hellcats worth of power under the hood. It's a twin-turbo 9.0-liter Mercury Racing engine with a quad-cam four-valve setup. Basically, it's a V8 boat motor developed for cars. Mercury Marine is the crew that developed the V8 for the 1990s Chevy Corvette ZR-1. That all-aluminum LT-5 under the hood cranked out 405 hp – an astronomical figure for the time – and helped make the ZR-1 an icon. Take a listen to Tantrum's 9.0-liter Mercury mill below. Before it threw a Tantrum, it did the "Cudinator" used in some of the Fast and the Furious movies. You might not know: Tantrum won the Best Domestic category of the GT Awards at SEMA – chosen by your author. The sinister looks were the hook, and the crazy engine solidified its performance cred.
