**** 1971 Dodge Challenger 340 Conv ****

If you are looking for great running and driving Mopar E-Body drop-top I challenge you to find a better example under $40k.  This was born and raised H-code 340 Dodge Challenger convertible and it has GREAT documentation – check out the details below!

  • 1970 NOM Engine – this is running a 1970 FORGED CRANK 340 – pumping out a little more than the factory rated 275hp – 1,000 miles since the build.
  • 727 Torqueflite Automatic Transmission - recent build with mild shift kit
  • Suregrip 8-3/4” rear (3:55 gears) - perfect!
  • The color was changed in the 90’s to FC7 Plum Crazy Purple – the car was an original Butterscotch car.
  • Original BUILD SHEET & TWO FENDER TAG car!

This is one of the most optioned out  E-body rag-tops ever built according to Galen.

Options include Power Steering, Power Front Disc Brakes, T/A Challenger quick ratio steering box, AM-FM, Cassette Player- Recorder, Power Windows, Power Top, Buckets, Console, very rare Chrome package, Luggage Rack, etc.

20 years ago, during the restoration the previous owner added the Go-Wing, a Tuff Wheel, and the Side Rallye Scoops.

PAINT, BODY, FRAME & SUSPENSION

The car was restored about 20 years ago and still presents itself pretty well. The technology of the time was not what it is today. The rear quarters have been replaced, the trunk drops were not available then so they remain original and in need of repair. The typical E-Body Dutchman panel cracking is evident but not too bad. The rockers where the quarters were welded could’ve been done better. There is a spot on the driver’s door where the paint is cracked probably due to either bad prep or filler. There is a patch in the trunk floor; there is rust in one of the wheel houses and a small hole in the front frame rail on the passenger side. All these issues have been like this since the car was purchased by the current owner (15 years ago). The car looks, runs, drives, and handles wonderfully and will bring the next owner many years of enjoyment.

The suspension is all good and functions as new and entire braking system is 100%, very solid, tight, and the quick ratio steering makes the highway on ramps very fun!

GLASS, CHROME AND TRIM

The glass looks to be original glass maybe with the exception of the windshield, all power windows operate well and line-up perfectly.  The front and rear bumpers are in very good condition.  The stainless trim is in great shape, the headlight bezels, grille, emblems, and mirrors are all amazing. All lighting works; the high/low beams, dome light, reverse lights, tail lights, parking lights, turn signals, four-way flashers, glove light, trunk light, and the license plate light. The top is in GREAT shape and looks new, glass rear window – the power top operates very well, no issues there. The “parade boot” fits nicely and is in good shape. The car has the jack assembly and space save spare with fill canister.

INTERIOR

The white vinyl interior is 100% complete and in wonderful condition, mostly new from what I can see. The seats have been recovered and new seat foams ensure your correct view over the dashboard. The console and glove compartment doors operate well; the seat belts all work, the dash lights are bright; all the gauges report in correctly, the AM-FM radio and speakers all work great, the playing speed on the cassette seems a bit slow, the wipers, horn, etc. all work well. The HVAC controls work on all fan settings and blows hot, and the AC runs nice and cool. All factory gauges work and operate correctly – these Rallye Gauge Clusters are great looking in these cars.

DRIVE TRAIN

The NOM 1970 340 has excellent power and runs extremely smooth and is very easy to drive.  The motor does not smoke, tick or make any noises… again it runs great with no issues, it was rebuilt to stock specs during the resto. The transmission is NOT the original 727 transmission. It shifts excellent through the gears and is an absolute blast to drive!  If you get a little aggressive she’ll reward you with a nice, firm, “chirp” in between the gears… The car stays cool even in stop and go traffic.  The 8-3/4” SureGrip rear-end is running a set of 3:55 gears and yes, being a SureGrip; it’s an “Posi” rear.

Documents include TWO Fender tags, the ORIGINAL broadcast sheet (buildsheet), original sales brochure.

Auto blog

The best cars we drove this year

Tue, Dec 30 2014

Six hundred and fifty. That's roughly how many cars pass through the hands of Autoblog editors every year, from the vehicles we test here at home, to the cars we drive on new product launches, testing roundups, long-term cars, and so on. Of course, our individual numbers vary due to several reasons, but at the end of the day, our team's repertoire of automotive experience is indeed vast. But let's be honest, some cars certainly stand out more than others. So as the year's about to turn, and as we're readying brand-new daily cat calendars for our cubicles, our editors are all taking time to reflect on the machinery that made this year so special, with one simple, open-ended question as the guide – a question that we're asked quite frequently, from friends, family, colleagues, and more. "What's the best car you drove this year?" Lamborghini Huracan When I review the list of everything I drove in 2014, picking an absolute favorite becomes almost impossible. I mean, how does one delineate between the joy offered by cars as different as the Alfa Romeo 4C, Volkswagen Golf R, Mercedes-AMG GT S and even the humble-yet-wonderful Chevy Colorado? Okay fine, I'll just pick the Lamborghini. I drove the Lamborghini Huracan LP 610-4 on a racetrack, in the mountains, and along southern coast of Spain. It felt like the king of the car jungle in all of those places, sucking the eyeballs of observers nearly out of their heads as it drove by, and almost melting my brain with its cocktail of speed and grip and intense communication. It feels a little easy to say that the one new supercar I drove this year was also my favorite, but the fact is that the Huracan is one of the finest cars I've driven during my career, let alone 2014. Judge me if you must. – Seyth Miersma Senior Editor Rolls-Royce Wraith There are a couple of ways to look at the question, "What's the best car you drove this year?" In terms of what was so good I'd go out and buy one tomorrow, that'd be my all-time sweetheart, the Volkswagen GTI. Or if I'm just talking about sheer cool-factor, maybe something like the Galpin GTR1, BMW i8, or Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG. But instead, I'm going to write about the sheer opulence of being the best of the best. The hand-crafted, holier-than-thou, shut-your-mouth-when-I'm-talking-to-you supremacy. I'm picking the Rolls-Royce Wraith. I drove the Wraith for a week in April, and was really, really impressed. This car does everything, perfectly.

The biggest gas-guzzlers of 2024: 'The Meanest List' is the opposite of greenest cars

Thu, Mar 14 2024

In some circles — especially some automotive circles — bigger is better. This explains the Hummer, for example. In its so-called “Meanest List” of a dozen models, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) makes no apologies for berating “the worst-performing mass market automobiles” sold in 2024 in the U.S. The most diminutive car on the list is a Chevy Corvette Z06. At the top of this particular heap is the Mercedes-Benz AMG G63, a gas-powered SUV that the environmental agency says was “the worst-performing vehicle of the more than 1,200 models assessed by Greener Cars and has an annual fuel cost over $4,000.” Not to mention its MSRP of around $184,000. Rank Make & Model Powertrain Green Score MSRP Estimated Annual Fuel Cost* 1 Mercedes-Benz AMG G63 Gas 20 $184,000 $4,242 2 Ram 1500 TRX 4x4 Gas 22 $98,335 $3,819 3 Ford F150 Raptor R Gas 24 $79,975 $3,777 4 Cadillac Escalade V Gas 26 $152,295 $3,388 5 Dodge Durango SRT Gas 26 $74,995 $3,332 6 Jeep Wrangler 4dr 4X4 Gas 27 $35,895 $3,260 7 Jeep Grand Wagoneer 4x4 Gas 28 $91,945 $3,058 8 Mercedes-Benz G550 Gas 28 $143,000 $3,186 9 GMC Hummer EV SUV EV 29 $98,845 $1,746 10 GMC Sierra Gas 29 $37,700 $3,069 11 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Gas 30 $114,395 $3,169 12 Mercedes-Benz Maybach S680 Gas 30 $234,300 $3,031 *ACEEE analysis using EIA data of the annual cost of driving 15,000 miles In terms of numbers, the dirty dozen of the meanest includes seven SUVs and three trucks. Lonely at the middle of the list is the sole electric, the GMC Hummer EV, which weighs in at 9,000 pounds. The council notes that “though EVs have lower emissions than similarly sized gasoline models, the Hummer demonstrates that size and efficiency, not just fuel source, are important factors in a carÂ’s environmental impact.” ItÂ’s also worth reminding prospective buyers that the average fuel cost of a vehicle on the “Greenest List” eats up only a fifth of the fuel cost of a vehicle on the Meanest List, “showing that greener options can also be more affordable.” The ACEEE also put out a "Greener List" of efficient gasoline and hybrid cars that don't require plugging in.  By the Numbers Green Cadillac Chevrolet Dodge Ford GMC Hummer Jeep Maybach Mercedes-Benz RAM Emissions Fuel Efficiency Green Automakers Truck SUV Electric Hybrid

FCA plants skipping summer shutdown to keep up with demand

Thu, May 14 2015

Hopefully, some FCA US factory employees don't have big plans for the usual summer shutdown, because the automaker is keeping several plants running this year. Demand is so high that the company wants to keep models rolling off the assembly lines. Four FCA US assembly plants, all the engine factories, and some locations that build transmissions are staying open throughout the summer, according to the Detroit Free Press. Usually, these sites would see a two-week shutdown for the company to retool and perform repairs. This year, factories are staying open for FCA to support its strong sales. The lines that remaining humming through the summer show an inclination toward the automaker's popular SUV's and crossovers. They include the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Michigan that builds the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango; Saltillo Van Assembly in Mexico that constructs the Ram ProMaster; Toledo Assembly Complex in Ohio that produces the Cherokee and Wrangler; and Toluca Assembly in Mexico that makes the Dodge Journey and Fiat 500.
