Dodge's first Challenger was released into the muscle car market in 1970; it was called the 1970 Dodge Challenger. Chrysler Corporation's Dodge division launched two distinct automobiles under the Challenger title. The first one, the 1970 Challenger was a relatively late entrant into the pony car market. Highly inspired by the E-body design of Plymouth Barracuda, Dodge's first Challenger had two inches of extra wheel base. In terms of design, the Dodge Challenger was only marginally different from the Plymouth Barracuda. The outer frame was designed by Carl 'CAM' Cameron, who also designed Dodge's flagship car the 1966 Dodge Charger. The grille of the 1970 Challenger was inspired by Cameron's earlier designs for the Charger which was originally intended to contain a turbine engine. The 1970 Challenger had a Six-Pack 340 in^A^3 (5.6 L) engine which was specially tuned to create a homologation racing Trans Am car; this feature was imparted solely to the 1970 Dodge Challenger. The car was placed with a massive hood scoop on a fiberglass hood. The front and rear wheels of the car were fitted with 'megaphone' exhaust outlets along with front and rear sway bars to enhance handling. The car's standard equipment included front ground effect spoilers and ducktail spoiler. The taillamps ran all the way across the back of the car and the backup light was placed at the centre of the rear. The back up lights was later changed in the 1971 and 1972 Dodge Challengers. Today the 1970 Dodge Challenger is much sought after by the avid collectors. Car enthusiasts are willing to drop big dollar for a mint condition 1970 Dodge Challenger and even its parts. By the time production of Dodge Challengers ceased in 1974, over 165,000 units had been sold, with over 80,000 units sold in its first year itself.

How Dodge dealers are earning the right to sell Hellcats

Wed, 10 Sep 2014

We all hate the idea of the dreaded dealer markup when it comes to buying a highly anticipated new car. Take the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, for example. You might spend hours reading about its supercharged V8 and speccing the model just right in the configurator, but when it finally comes down to laying down the cash, the dealer adds thousands of dollars as a "market adjustment" on the muscle machine of your dreams. As it turns out, when the Hellcat starts hitting showrooms in the third quarter, Dodge is trying to make sure that's not the case.
Dealer orders for the much-hyped Hellcat recently started, but Dodge boss Tim Kuniskis has put some special caveats in place to ensure that the Hellcat makes it to the road quickly. The initial allocation is based on the number of Dodge products that a showroom has sold in the last 180 days, and a second allotment in December is based on the last 90 days of sales and 30-day turnover. "You sell a lot of Darts for me, Journeys for me, Durangos for me, I'm going to give you the rights to this one, too, because this is a halo of the brand," said Kuniskis to Automotive News.
Furthermore, how quickly the Hellcat sells is also going to decide whether showrooms get more of them. "If you want to market-adjust the car, that's your right. But if your days-on-lot goes above what the other guys that are selling them at MSRP is, they will end up earning the allocation because their days-on-lot will be lower," he said to Automotive News. Obviously, this doesn't prevent dealers from marking up the Challenger SRT, but the strategy certainly discourages it.

Chrysler extending production of current Dodge Avenger, Jeep Wrangler, Grand Caravan

Wed, 24 Jul 2013

Are you hesitant to pull the trigger on a brand new Dodge Avenger in hopes that a new one will be coming? Well, don't hold your breath. According to The Detroit News, Chrysler will be extending production of the current Avenger sedan through the end of 2015.
Originally, we heard that the company would kill the Avenger to better focus its midsize sedan efforts on the Chrysler 200 replacement. But then new reports stated there would indeed be an Avenger successor, and that we could see it as early as next January. This Detroit News report cites supplier sources confirming the extension of Avenger production, though Chrysler has not released an official statement on the matter.
These same suppliers say that the current Jeep Wrangler will live on through mid-2018 - that's right, another five years. The Detroit News reports that a replacement for the iconic, go-anywhere Jeep was due in mid-2016.

FCA CEO Mike Manley will run Americas for Stellantis after PSA merger

Sun, Dec 20 2020

DETROIT — Fiat Chrysler CEO Mike Manley will run operations in the Americas when his company merges with FranceÂ’s PSA Peugeot early next year. FCA Chairman John Elkann announced ManleyÂ’s new post on Friday in a letter to employees. ManleyÂ’s role in the merged company had been a mystery. PSA CEO Carlos Tavares will run the overall company, to be named Stellantis. Shareholders of both companies will vote on the merger Jan. 4 to seal the deal creating the worldÂ’s fourth-largest automaker. The merger is expected to be completed by the end of March. PSA will get six seats on the new companyÂ’s 11-member board, which will be chaired by Elkann. The Americas, especially the U.S., are key to the new companyÂ’s success. Fiat ChryslerÂ’s Jeep and Ram brands are highly profitable, and Tavares has long wanted to sell PSA vehicles in the U.S. Manley has been the Italian-American automakerÂ’s CEO for 2 1/2 years, taking over when Sergio Marchionne died in 2018. Stellantis will have the capacity to produce 8.7 million cars a year, just behind Volkswagen, the Renault-Nissan alliance and Toyota.
