Up for sale is my early 1971 Datsun 240z.  HLS30 25,062.  The car has been a project of mine for the past 6 years or so.

Unknown actual mileage, odometer shows 16027 currently.  Most likely 116,027 due to the condition when I got it, previous talks with old owner, and the car was in storage and not registered since 1988.  Motor had failed and the gentlemen I bought the vehicle from had plans to fix it and one day drive it again just never got around to it.  Car basically sat in storage for 25 years.  Over the past 6 years I have owned the vehicle its been garaged while in restoration, I have tried to keep it as original as possible but few things have been altered such as different steering wheel and antenna, ect as listed or in pics.  I will try to list as much info as I can, but basically almost every item on the car has been replaced or restored.

Engine bay was sealed with Eastwood Rust Encapsulator, few see thrus due to brake fluid drips and such but looks alright and can be touched up.  Didnt really have any rust to begin with but used that to be on safe side and at the time I was unsure what color I was going to paint the Z so I just went with black.  Car was originally orange, most of car was stripped bare, and shot with epoxy primer, primered, then painted red.  Areas such as door jams were not taken down to metal rather just scuffed and shot.  Car didnt have much rust to begin with, just normal rust areas such as on lower fenders were cut out patched with repair panels, and outer wheel wells needed to be replaced, rear wheel lips were rolled as I was initially planning on putting wider rims on.    Paint is by no means show quality, could use some wetsanding to flatten out orange peel and blemishes, but overall its very presentable for a 42 year old car.

Replaced the motor with a N47/N42 280z setup.

SU's dismantled and cleaned; new nozzles, needles, float gaskets, insulators, hoses.  Choke cables work fine, although I need to tap nozzles at times when closing choke due to sticking.

Suspension;  Tokico springs and struts, new bearings, all new suspension bushings and ect (if remember Energy Suspension? kit)

Brakes all new;  drums, calipers, brake booster, master cylinder, rotors were turned.

MSA exhaust, its clamped right now could use some welding to give it a cleaner look.

Alternator; new 280zx alternator with mod to eliminate voltage regulator.

Original radiator was cleaned/sealed at radiator shop and reinstalled.

Gas tank was cleaned and reinstalled.

Headlights have been changed to reflector type, have original headlights.  Also included is a headlight relay harness thats not been installed.

Fog lights installed, all reversible if you want to just take them and the wiring out.

Electric fuel pump installed, with cut off switch.

Grant steering wheel.

Interior is original, floorboard carpet is bad on drivers side, rest of carpet is nice, vinyl is nice, interior panels nice, small crack in interior panel by hatch support.

Floorboards are solid, when cleaning I did notice a rust area that will need patching, not too drastic but needs attention (see pic)

Headliner has a cut in it. (see pic)

Dash has typical cracks and will need a cover.

4-speed tranny.

Clutch/pressure plate new.

280zx turbo oil pump installed.

Pertronix ignition, NGK wires/plugs.

280z rims with 215/60/14 tires.  Tires were too wide and rubbing struts so had to use 1/4" spacers.  If changed to 195 series tires, could remove spacers.

Windshield has pitting.

Weatherstripping redone thruout entire car.

Doors need to be repostioned or shims?, at this time they do not close completely flush. Not sure if new weatherstripping is causing this or I simply am not getting them lined up correctly.

Gauges all work except as noted;  clock does not work, and I get some occasional bouncing around from the tach when full throttle and the bulb in the oil pressure/coolant temp gauge needs replace.

Bumpers are original but still very presentable, rear bumper has been bumped in back and showing some rust from bolt area.

New turn signal lenses/marker lights.

Glove box cover is broke at the hinge point.

Seats are original, need to be restored.

5 year collector plates/registration recently done.  (stating this due to I believe Colorado residents can have these tranfered over to them within a time frame if want, check the laws first, Im not fully sure)

I love this car but my kids love to eat also so the car has to go.  I have done my very best to list everything about this car, I want someone to be happy with their purchase and not surprised or shocked upon arrival.  Please remember its a 42 year old car.  Although I am confident the car runs great and is not a rust bucket like we have all seen, the car is being sold as is with no warranty.   Car can be viewed anytime, just contact me. Buyer is responsible for transport.   Payment needs to be made within 7 days of end of auction.  If need any additional pictures or have any questions please ask.

Roadkill pits every project car against each other

Sat, 22 Feb 2014

The guys behind Motor Trend's monthly Roadkill series have collected nine of their favorite project cars from their videos and pitted them against each other in a battle royale to determine a winner. It's 44 minutes long, but it's completely worth the investment of time.
The cars run the gamut from a 1973 Chevrolet Ramp Truck, a 1975 AMC Pacer and a legitimately impressive 1967 Chevy Camaro, and they are pitted against each other to see which is the fastest around an autocross course. The drivers include Roadkill's two hosts and Motor Trend's Johnny Lieberman and Carlos Lago. It's reminiscent of the best episodes of Top Gear and worth a watch.
So it's the weekend - the perfect time to relax. Grab your preferred beverage, get comfortable and enjoy 44 minutes of some seriously ratty but utterly cool project cars as they are throttled within an inch of their lives (or past it). Scroll down to check out the video.

Malaise Era All-Stars

Fri, 17 May 2013

A few weeks ago, we bid a fond happy 40th anniversary to the automotive dark ages of 1973-84 that have come to be known as "The Malaise Era" - the performance ice-age when 160 horsepower was a lot and a 0-60 time of under 10 seconds was remarkable. Like music in the 1980s, everything in automobiledom didn't suck, however. There were a few bright spots. Here are five of our favorites:

Renault planning a Tata Nano rival. Again.

Wed, 28 Nov 2012

Four years ago, Renault confirmed that it would partner with India's Bajaj Auto to develop a rival to the Tata Nano. At the time, as everyone waited for the Tata Nano to arrive, you could have used a Richter scale to measure the tremors the executive suites of any automaker with an interest in the low end of emerging markets. Then the Nano, still the cheapest car in the world, didn't sell so well - at the end of last year its sales were just six percent of its most conservative projections - and everyone seemed content to let Tata spend the money to figure out if there really was a market for the cheapest car in the world.
Renault believes there is, kind of. Automotive News Europe reports that it will partner with Nissan to build two low-priced cars for emerging markets, one for €3,000 ($3,888 U.S.) and another for €5,000 ($6,400 U.S.). The price of the least expensive offering is nearly $1,400 more than a Nano, which costs $2,500, and that can't be considered a small sum in comparison. But one of the hindsight knocks on the Nano has been that even in emerging markets buyers don't want a car whose biggest lure is that it is cheap; they'd rather give their aspirations a bit more of a workout.
Renault's offerings are scheduled to hit the non-Western market in late 2014, which is coincidentally the same year that will see the return of the budget-minded and emerging-market-specific Datsun nameplate. They'll be built in Renault facilities in Chennai, India, with no mention made of Bajaj this time around.
