Bonk Brothers Racing is proud to offer the "John Morton, Project 46 Car". This is not the original BRE 240Z that John drove back in the day. That car was destroyed in the 70's, but it is the next best thing! In an article in Racer Magazine, John Morton states, "It looks as good as it did back in the day. The paint is probably better". Here is a little bit about this car. 2013 was the 50th anniversary of the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) National Runoffs. SCCA was allowing past national champions an automatic walk on and race in that event. John Morton, a two time national champion, in a Datsun 240Z car in 1970-71, was asked by Steve Bonk if he would like to do it. John said YES! Bonk Brothers Racing contacted two time national champion car builder, Sam Neave from L.N.A. enterprises in North Carolina, to build the highest developed e production 240Z car. He did just that! He put his heart and soul into this car for his new friend John Morton. It should be stated that many other people were involved in this effort. Donations were made to support the crew and logistics for the event, but no monatary donations went towards the car build. If you are not aware of this, the Gold Rush is on for Japanese collector cars. The values are sky rocketing for significant vehicles. Last year a Datsun Z car sold for $260,000 and a Toyota 2000 GT sold for a whopping $1.16 million. The Project 46 Datsun z car can not be reproduced for the price I'm starting this at. This car is an investment that can be raced. Why build a replica or clone Z car, when after all is said and done, it will only be worth half of what you put into it, when you go to sell it, while owning this car will only continue to grow in value. I have checked, and this car will be accepted in vintage racing organizations. Tires may have to be changed to a radial slick with two grooves. Because of the quality build, this car could easily sit on the pole of any vintage group that it is placed in. If the new owner chooses that they want to go with a vintage engine, the car could get another 60 HP and make it that much faster. John Morton, with only 10 laps (due to rain conditions during practice week) in the new car, was still able to get a top 10 finish out of 33 cars (not bad for a 71 year old). The winner of the e production race was another Z car that Sam Neave also worked on and built the engine for. With a little more test time, and car adjustment to John's liking, the car could easily be a top 5 finisher. John has said he would like to continue racing this car. He would like to race it at Laguna Seca for the 2014 Runoffs. He would also be happy to run it in vintage races also. If you become the owner of this car, and would like John to race it for or with you, Bonk Brothers Racing has a complete volunteer staff that would be ready to continue the quest. Sam Neave and the Bonk Bros. are already working on a stronger engine and brake package for the 2014 season. The car has the highest level e production 2.4 legal motor in it. 4 speed blueprinted transmission & R180 limited slip differential. Everything on this car is NEW. If it wasn't bought new, it was rebuilt to like new specifications. It has a show car paint job. So nice, that many people at the Runoffs, commented saying it was the nicest car there. Not bad for 700 cars. The car looks so good, that one racer offered to trade his Trans am GT1 Jaguar for the car! Fiat contemplating sub-brand to compete with Dacia, Datsun
Tue, 05 Feb 2013You can add Fiat to the admittedly short list of automakers considering a low-cost brand to rival Dacia. The inexpensive Eastern European brand from Renault-Nissan has performed on the balance sheet like a premium model line, and the money the alliance is taking off the table is encouraging other players to deal themselves in. Pretty soon Nissan's Datsun sub-brand will join the Dacia party, going on sale in Russia, Indonesia and India and will claim even more rubles, rupiahs and rupees for the parent company. Volkswagen recently said it will make a decision this year on a budget line for the Chinese market. With the euthanasia of Lancia and plans to move the Fiat brand upmarket, company CEO Sergio Marchionne wonders aloud to Automotive News Europe whether there could be room for a new budget brand underneath Fiat.
We're told that the initiative has been in the idea box for five years and even moved to the stage of name considerations, like Innocenti, but worries about profit kept it from realization. If such a range were to be developed, Marchionne says it couldn't be built in Italy and stay within budget, and the company is "analyzing its manufacturing capacity outside of Europe to see if a low-cost brand is viable."
First new Datsun in decade sketched, set for Indian reveal
Mon, 01 Jul 2013Nissan's Datsun nameplate revival will begin with two models bound for the Indian market. Nissan has released sketches of a five-door hatchback based on the Micra (codenamed K2) and a top-down view of a hood that could potentially be from a sedan.
The company's press release says all will be revealed on July 15 in New Delhi, India. The Datsun lineup will be first offered in 2014 to that country's ride-deprived residents as well as Indonesia and Russia. Later in 2014, South Africa will join the list.
We've heard Nissan plans for Datsuns to share platforms with company-owned Lada. In January, we heard the projected price tag could be around $3,000 USD to compete with Chinese imports. The official press release (which can be read in full below) says nothing about either of these reports, however.
Datsun officially reborn with Go model for India [w/video]
Mon, 15 Jul 2013In March of 2012, Nissan announced the return of its historic Datsun brand. Datsun used to represent the Nissan brand in a number of markets, but its badge hasn't been worn on a new model since 1981. In 2013, though, it has been relaunched as the Japanese manufacturer's budget offering in the emerging markets of India and Russia.
The model that will lead that charge, at least in India, is the Go, a car that pays tribute to the very first Datsun, the DAT-GO.
The operative term with the Datsun brand is: "budget offering." Don't step inside the Go and expect beautiful hides or brushed metals (it's being sold in India, after all). The instrument cluster features a simple speedometer, while the five-speed manual and the center stack above it are rather barren. It's not without luxuries, though, as iPod-style connectivity is available through a Mobile Docking Station.
