1976 Datsun 280Z

Up for your consideration is a 1976 Datsun 280Z.

This car was restored in 2000 and was titled as an antique until 2009. During this time, it had seen minimal road use (mainly driven to cruises and shows). In 2009, we retitled the car with standard plates, and the car was driven regularly during the summer months, while being stored during the winter. Unfortunately, we have had to store the car outside the last two years, and rust has started in a few areas (see photos below).

The car runs and drives excellent. It has a current PA registration and inspection. The aftermarket (dealer installed) AC blows ice cold, the original radio works, and all the original manuals, including the “starting guide” card are present. The car is fitted with aftermarket Western wheels (also dealer installed, as told to me by the previous owner), however only one original center hub was present when the car was purchased (they were plastic and simply pressed in), and we replaced them with American Racing center hubs.

The interior, overall, is in good condition. There is a split at the seam in both the driver and passenger seats, as well as a crack in the center of the dash. The seats and dash are both original, and were not replaced when the car was restored. All of the carpets were replaced, and are in excellent condition.

The car had an aftermarket stereo in it when it was purchased, and speaker wiring, amp output cables, as well as some sort of dial control (perhaps an amp level control?) are still present. Being that an aftermarket radio was installed, an antenna switch from an earlier model Z was also installed to control the antenna. The switch does not work, and appears to have been rebuilt in the past. The antenna still functions fine if the switch is jumpered. Repair the current switch, or re-install a radio-mounted switch, and you’re good to go! There is also a rectangular hole cut in the console (the size of a rocker switch).

All other lights, switches, and indicators work as they should. All gauges function properly, with the exception of the clock.

The original Nissan jack, wrench, and wheel chocks are also present. A spare headlight is also included with the car, as well as a “Le Bra” cover for the front of the car (this is new, and has never been installed)

Some recent major maintenance that has been done to the car:

2009 – New fuel pump and relays installed

2010 – All four struts replaced

2012 – New ignition switch installed by local Nissan dealer

2012 – Cooling system flushed and heater valve serviced (performed at local Nissan dealer) – This was supposed to remedy a sticking heater valve, but ended up causing more harm than good (see issues below)

2012 – New plugs, wires, cap, and rotor installed by my mechanic.

Issues with the car:

- There is rust beginning at the front of the hood, around the driver’s side rear wheel well, and at the seam on the driver’s side of the rear hatch (see pictures)

- The heater valve is stuck on. This issue was supposed to have been remedied when the valve was serviced in 2012, however instead of replacing the valve, they “rebuilt” it, supposedly due to a replacement not being available. The valve worked fine for a few months, then began to stick again.

- The recirculation / vent door does not operate with the heater controls. This problem began after the above heater valve service was performed. The door itself still functions if operated manually from under the dash. This may just be due to a disconnected cable.

- The wipers are “sluggish”. They have been this way since the car was purchased. They work fine in the rain, but if the windshield is somewhat dry, they operate extremely slowly.

- As mentioned above, the antenna switch usually does not work, but could possibly be rebuilt.

If there are any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask! More photos are available upon request.

Happy Bidding!

Fiat contemplating sub-brand to compete with Dacia, Datsun

Tue, 05 Feb 2013

You can add Fiat to the admittedly short list of automakers considering a low-cost brand to rival Dacia. The inexpensive Eastern European brand from Renault-Nissan has performed on the balance sheet like a premium model line, and the money the alliance is taking off the table is encouraging other players to deal themselves in. Pretty soon Nissan's Datsun sub-brand will join the Dacia party, going on sale in Russia, Indonesia and India and will claim even more rubles, rupiahs and rupees for the parent company. Volkswagen recently said it will make a decision this year on a budget line for the Chinese market. With the euthanasia of Lancia and plans to move the Fiat brand upmarket, company CEO Sergio Marchionne wonders aloud to Automotive News Europe whether there could be room for a new budget brand underneath Fiat.
We're told that the initiative has been in the idea box for five years and even moved to the stage of name considerations, like Innocenti, but worries about profit kept it from realization. If such a range were to be developed, Marchionne says it couldn't be built in Italy and stay within budget, and the company is "analyzing its manufacturing capacity outside of Europe to see if a low-cost brand is viable."

Renault planning a Tata Nano rival. Again.

Wed, 28 Nov 2012

Four years ago, Renault confirmed that it would partner with India's Bajaj Auto to develop a rival to the Tata Nano. At the time, as everyone waited for the Tata Nano to arrive, you could have used a Richter scale to measure the tremors the executive suites of any automaker with an interest in the low end of emerging markets. Then the Nano, still the cheapest car in the world, didn't sell so well - at the end of last year its sales were just six percent of its most conservative projections - and everyone seemed content to let Tata spend the money to figure out if there really was a market for the cheapest car in the world.
Renault believes there is, kind of. Automotive News Europe reports that it will partner with Nissan to build two low-priced cars for emerging markets, one for €3,000 ($3,888 U.S.) and another for €5,000 ($6,400 U.S.). The price of the least expensive offering is nearly $1,400 more than a Nano, which costs $2,500, and that can't be considered a small sum in comparison. But one of the hindsight knocks on the Nano has been that even in emerging markets buyers don't want a car whose biggest lure is that it is cheap; they'd rather give their aspirations a bit more of a workout.
Renault's offerings are scheduled to hit the non-Western market in late 2014, which is coincidentally the same year that will see the return of the budget-minded and emerging-market-specific Datsun nameplate. They'll be built in Renault facilities in Chennai, India, with no mention made of Bajaj this time around.

Roadkill pits every project car against each other

Sat, 22 Feb 2014

The guys behind Motor Trend's monthly Roadkill series have collected nine of their favorite project cars from their videos and pitted them against each other in a battle royale to determine a winner. It's 44 minutes long, but it's completely worth the investment of time.
The cars run the gamut from a 1973 Chevrolet Ramp Truck, a 1975 AMC Pacer and a legitimately impressive 1967 Chevy Camaro, and they are pitted against each other to see which is the fastest around an autocross course. The drivers include Roadkill's two hosts and Motor Trend's Johnny Lieberman and Carlos Lago. It's reminiscent of the best episodes of Top Gear and worth a watch.
So it's the weekend - the perfect time to relax. Grab your preferred beverage, get comfortable and enjoy 44 minutes of some seriously ratty but utterly cool project cars as they are throttled within an inch of their lives (or past it). Scroll down to check out the video.
