1975 Datsun 280z

The Toy Barn is thrilled to offer this beautiful 1975 Datsun 280z, in excellent condition, and ready for it's new owner! This Z-car is great, and certainly a trip down memory lane. It was a recent trade-in here at our store, from a true Z enthusiast that traded this and a 1983 for the finest '83 Turbo on the planet. Interestingly enough, when I saw this car in person, I was very pleased; this car is a fantastic car to own and drive. The paint and body were redone, the interior was redone and looks excellent, the car runs, drives, and feels awesome out on the road, and from top to bottom the car looks great.

History: This Z started it's life delivered at a Datsun dealership in Richmond, Va in August of 1975. We have a full file of receipts and history, starting with the process of parts accumulation and restoration in 2004-2006, up through 2013 when several thousand dollars were spent on mechanical updates and upgrades. In 2005 (at about 110k miles), the car underwent the largest part of the physical restoration process, where it was sent to Morris Body and paint in Georgia and stripped, repainted, and refinished from top to bottom, including glass, seals, emblems, trim, rust repair, etc. (Over $5000 in body shop receipts). Aside from body work, the car also had a complete interior restoration including seats, door panels, dash, carpet, handles, trim, etc. Over all, this 280z was restored over the 2004-2006 time period, and then driven seldomly until purchased in 2008 by the gentleman who traded it to us. From 2010 to 2013, over $5000 was spent making this car's mechanics in line with it's appearance. The brakes were completely redone, as well as a valve adjustment, fuel pump and fuel sytem overhaul (lines, filter, etc), battery, and MUCH more. Bottom line: from 2004 to 2013, the car was driven only 4k miles or so, with $13k+ in parts and labor restoration. Otherwise it was stored as a seldom-driven collectible in a climate controlled environment. Babied, garage kept, and seldom driven. It still looks and runs excellent!

Condition: This is 280z is finished in Gold Metallic exterior, over Ivory vinyl interior. The paint looks very nice, and is fairly new, with about 4k miles of time on the road, though it's about 9 years old. I'd be happy to walk this car and give you further details, and more information about the paint and body. I've provided several pictures, including the underside of this car as well. The interior is a solid 8.5 out of 10, and is all redone and excellent. The seats are newly re-wrapped, the dash is is new, the carpet is new, the trim is new, and it looks fantastic. From top to bottom, everything you see is very clean. The motor runs strong, the transmission feels great, the suspension is nice and tight. As previously mentioned, over $5k was spent in the last 300 miles making the car ready for the street. We also serviced the car here at our Performance Center, and it's ready for the road. I have a full folder of maintenance and receipts, as well as the owner's booklets, included with the sale.

Though in great condition, this is of course a nearly 40 year old car, as I'm sure you understand. There are a few various nicks, dings, and imperfections, but overall it is really nice. It is being sold as-is. CALL ME FOR MORE DETAILS!!!
Check out the pictures below, be sure and allow time for them to load!

If you have any questions about the condition of this car, and would like for me to go over it panel by panel with you, please give me a ring. I'd be glad to do an "over the phone" walkaround for you.

Datsun's lackluster initial sales fall below Tata Nano

Wed, 15 Oct 2014

When Tata introduced the Nano back in 2008, everyone was amazed at how cheap it was. They called it a game changer, but no game was changed. In fact, it took Tata five years to sell the 250,000 units it had the capacity to build in a single year. As it turns out, even buyers in what economists call "developing markets" like India aren't necessarily interested in buying an ultra-cheap automobile. And now it appears that Nissan may be falling into the same trap.
A little over a year ago, Nissan revived its old moniker Datsun to serve as a budget brand - similar to what ally Renault did with Dacia. Its lineup (consisting of models like the Go hatchback, Go+ minivan, On-Do sedan and Mi-Do hatch) is largely based on old architecture, packaged with little more than basic equipment and sold at rock-bottom prices. But Bloomberg reports that, even in the brand's core markets like India and Indonesia, the new Datsuns haven't been selling.
According to local industry figures, Datsun has sold fewer than 10,000 units of its $5,100 Go hatchbacks in India since its introduction back in March. Maruti Suzuki, by comparison, sells twice that many of its similarly priced Alto hatchbacks every month. In fact, after peaking in April, Datsun only sold 607 units in India this past July, dipping 77 percent to drop below even the number of Nanos which Tata sold that month.

Subaru Legacy pitted against Roadkill project cars

Fri, 05 Sep 2014

There's an evergreen debate among auto enthusiasts about whether they would prefer to have the latest and greatest car of today or a certified classic from yesteryear. What if you had to further define that, though, and the choice was between a brand new 2015 Subaru Legacy or a turbocharged Datsun 240Z with a hatch that wouldn't close? Roadkill aimed to find out that and more in one of its best videos to date.
According to the hosts, Subaru came to them, handed over some money and challenged Roadkill's project cars against its latest Legacy. The result is every bit as good (or better) than any automotive-themed show you could find on television.
Things start simple with a figure-eight race in a rodeo arena with the Subaru taking on Roadkill's 1968 Ford Ranchero, originally built for ice racing. From there the Legacy races a 1968 Dodge Charger with no windows around and off-road rally stage. Finally, the Subie goes head-to-head against the Rotsun, the aforementioned turbocharged 240Z, through an abandoned neighborhood. Plus, there's a bonus drag race challenging them all.

Malaise Era All-Stars

Fri, 17 May 2013

A few weeks ago, we bid a fond happy 40th anniversary to the automotive dark ages of 1973-84 that have come to be known as "The Malaise Era" - the performance ice-age when 160 horsepower was a lot and a 0-60 time of under 10 seconds was remarkable. Like music in the 1980s, everything in automobiledom didn't suck, however. There were a few bright spots. Here are five of our favorites:
