Up for sale is a solid 1972 Datsun 240 Z. I recently bought this car from a co-worker and was going to build it out, but I just bought a house and now I don't have space to keep it. I am selling it with no reserve and have the title in hand. It is registered in California and the tags are good until January 2014.

The motor is from a later year Z, rebuilt and installed a few years ago. The car sat parked, so it has very little miles on it. It has headers, an electronic fuel pump and SU carburetors. I have been told that it also has lower gears in the differential. It has a hard time starting when cold. I think the carburetors are a bit gummed up, but once it's warm, it idles and runs great. I think it just needs to be driven. As I said, it sat parked for so long.

The car rides nice and straight. It is comfortable and quiet on the road. The transmission is smooth. The motor and exhaust sound great. No overheating or any other drivability problems.

The interior is decent but it does show its age. The driver's seat is torn. All the gauges work except for the speedometer, which I was told got disconnected because the new differential gearing made it inaccurate. I took a look today and it looks like the cable is connected, so maybe a speedo cable gear was removed from the trans? Not sure. At any rate, the speedo isn't currently working.

There is a six? disk Sony CD changer behind the passenger seat and a Sony receiver in the dash. The receiver seems to work but I haven't tried putting any CD's in the changer.

The car has nice wheels on it, along with new tires. The front tires rub when you turn too far but it seems harmless as I haven't been able to see any rough spots on the tires or car.

There is some rust to be found. I took pictures of everywhere that I could find any rust. It's mostly in the lower rocker panels, front and rear. One spot poking out under the rear window seal. There is also one rusted bit on the passenger floorboard. Everything else looks good.

The car was originally painted blue, but was repainted gray at some point. The paint is dull, and in some places, it has chipped off to reveal the original blue. The body is straight with no noticeable dents.

There are cross drilled rotors on the front, along with stainless brake lines. Not sure if the front calipers are original or not but they work good. The rears are the original drum brakes.

Can't think of too much else. It's a solid car that needs to be driven.

37K miles in a 1967 Datsun Roadster

Tue, 11 Mar 2014

When we think of comfy, long-distance road cars, there are a few obvious choices. A Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Bentley Continental GT or, assuming fuel efficiency isn't paramount, a Range Rover are all good options for a road trip. But what if that road trip was 37,000 miles? Maybe something more reliable but still comfortable, then, like a Honda Accord. What about a 1967 Datsun Roadster?
As insane as it sounds, Scott Fisher is doing just that, running a Datsun 1600 Roadster across North America and racking up 13,500 miles in his first three months on the road. His total journey will see him pile over 37,000 miles on his red convertible. The car is lightly modified, but most of the work is for the sake of reliability and comfort, with a five-speed manual 'box, an upgraded radiator and electronic ignition.
Fisher's trip hasn't been all smooth, with a few typical bits of trouble. He also ran into some deer in Utah, quite literally, clipping one of the animals, which delivered quite a bit of damage to the passenger's front fender (hence the rear three-quarter view in our lead shot). Still, the car seems to be holding up well, as shown in this latest video from Petrolicious.

Malaise Era All-Stars

Fri, 17 May 2013

A few weeks ago, we bid a fond happy 40th anniversary to the automotive dark ages of 1973-84 that have come to be known as "The Malaise Era" - the performance ice-age when 160 horsepower was a lot and a 0-60 time of under 10 seconds was remarkable. Like music in the 1980s, everything in automobiledom didn't suck, however. There were a few bright spots. Here are five of our favorites:

Datsun to unveil second model later this month

Sun, 08 Sep 2013

Datsun, Nissan's new sub-brand for emerging markets, has announced plans to unveil its second model. Its first, the Go, was unveiled almost two months ago, and promised affordable, connected motoring for five in a handsome hatchback body. Datsun is following that up with a pair of new models for Indonesia.
The first of these two new vehicles will be shown on September 17 in Jakarta, eschewing the typical auto show debut. It's targeted at so-called "risers," the nickname for a group of highly aspirational customers in the Indonesian market. Datsun developed it locally with help from Nissan, and it'll cost under 100 million Indonesian rupiah (about $8,900 at today's rates).
We'll have the full boatload of information on the newest member of the Datsun family when it debuts on September 17. Scroll on to read the full press release from Datsun.
