1968 Chrysler Newport Base Convertible 2-door 6.3l on 2040-cars

I had this car listed a few weeks ago, but the buyer flaked out. So here it is, relisted.
I have owned this Newport since 1984, and part of me hates to sell it. But practicality sometimes takes precedence. This Newport is in overall good condition for a 46 year old car. My reserve price is reasonable. BODY: This is one of 176 Convertible Newports that had the wood grain option. The stainless trim on the side used to surround the wood grain, but I chose not to install the vinyl siding to avoid the maintenance. If you restore the car with wood-grain, it will definitely be a unique cruiser. I painted the car in 1986 with Centari paint, with hardener. The color is the factory correct yellow color, which matches its original color. The body is solid, but has a rust through spot on the right rear of the trunk lid, and some rust forming around the rim of the trunk gutter, visible once you open the lid. The bottom of the trunk has a few rust holes, but I had undercoated the rest of it to prevent them from growing. All the glass in this car is good, but see note below on the rear window on the convertible top. The rear bumper is dented as you might see in the photos. I have a replacement bumper (undented) that I will give to you if you buy the car. The paint still shines after a good rubbing and wax job. TOP: I bought the top from Robbins Top, and bought the best sun-fast fabric available. The top was installed in 1994, and unbelievably, is still OK-looking on the outside. The top does "seep" through a few cracks when it rains, however. The rear glass window just started to de-bond from the fabric, and is now completely separated. So, bottom line, this will need a new top unless you want to go top down all the time. A couple of the rubber seals are missing which seal the top to the roll-up windows. The top mechanism and the hydraulics are still 100% operational and have never given me trouble. The top boot is still good on its top side. There is one tear, which I have sewn up. All the snaps are present and "working". ENGINE: The car had 120,000 miles on it when I bought it in 1983. The previous owner had the engine rebuilt at 80K miles. The car has 227K miles on it now. I have replaced the oil pump, and the normal water pump, alternator, etc. But the basic engine parts haven't been touched since 80K. It is a 383 with 2bbl carb, and starts reliably. The engine runs a bit rough - it probably needs a carb rebuild, new plug wires and plugs to make it a daily driver. Windshield washer reservoir is cracked - you'll need a new one. The muffler is OK - sounds a bit throaty; it would need replacement if you want a quiet ride. Transmission is still good - never had a problem with it. There are a few leaks under the car - but nothing major. BRAKES: It has drum brakes all around. I have had the brake booster rebuilt 10+ years ago. The master cylinder and the 4 drum brake wheel cylinders were re-sleeved with stainless sleeves in the early 1990's, and haven't given me trouble since. While you may think you want the disk brakes on this car, be glad it is drum... the Budd disk brakes of 1968 are rare and very expensive to work on. The calipers are $300 each if you can find them, and the pads are pricey too. INTERIOR: The vinyl upholstery was redone in the late 1980's and is still in decent shape. The seat back of the driver seat was redone again in about 2010. There is one hole in the back seat bottom, about 1/2" diameter. The carpet was replaced in the late 1980's. It has a few wrinkles in it, but reasonably good shape. There are a few tears near the driver's foot area. The dashboard is cracked, which you can see in the pictures. All the controls work (lights, horn, turn signal, etc). The gas gauge quit a few years ago. The A/C components are under the hood, but I have never tried to get it to blow cold air. The heater controls are there, but the heater core started to leak about 15 years ago, so I just disconnected the hoses going into the cab. So the fan works, but no heat. TIRES: The tires are 10+ years old, and have about 1/4 of their tread left. Right Rear tire has a slow leak. REGISTRATION/PLATES: This car is currently registered in CA, paid through Sept 2014. I have the pink slip. The license plates are old style California plates; black with yellow text, which are becoming sought after. I have blocked out the plates in the pictures. They are a little rusty, but no holes. Rear plate is dented. With a little work, you can get this car workable and comfortable as a beach cruiser; It will definitely turn heads as a retro car. I will cooperate however possible to get this shipped to you. Please ask any questions you may have before bidding. Good luck! |

North America profit helps Fiat Chrysler limit its losses from coronavirus
Fri, Jul 31 2020MILAN — Italian-American automaker Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) posted a smaller-than-expected operating loss in the second quarter, as a small profit in North America helped to limit the damage wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic. FCA said on Friday it had an adjusted loss before interest and tax of 928 million euros ($1.1 billion) in April-June, versus a forecast 1.87 billion euro ($2.2 billion) loss in an analyst poll compiled by Reuters. The group also said it made adjusted earnings before interest and tax of 39 million euros ($46.2 million) in North America, the home market of its Jeep and Ram brands, in the quarter. Milan-listed FCA shares were up 1.2% at 1125 GMT, after being little changed before the results. Chief Executive Mike Manley said the group's plants were up and running and car dealers were selling in showrooms and online, following disruptions caused by the pandemic. "We have the flexibility and financial strength to push ahead with our plans," he said in a statement. FCA, which is set to tie-up with Peugeot maker PSA to create Stellantis, the world's fourth largest carmaker, said on ongoing probe launched by European Commission competition authorities was not expected to delay the merger timetable. Despite the pandemic, PSA earlier this week delivered a profit in the first half of the year and stuck to its medium-term margin goal. FCA said its industrial free cash flow was minus 4.9 billion euros in the second quarter, with a slightly lower cash burn compared with January-March. Â
Values snowball for legendary Tucker Sno-Cats, latest toys of the super rich
Fri, Jan 5 2018Here's a fun-sounding vehicle perfect for the cold and snow that's currently gripping much of North America. Tucker — no, not that Tucker — just marked its 75th anniversary making the Sno-Cat, its orange-painted, four-tread snow vehicles that have inspired backcountry skiers, collectors — and increasingly, the super rich. Bloomberg in a recent story writes that demand for the Medford, Ore.-based company's products is soaring on demand from the wealthy, who need a way to get to their backcountry mountain retreats. They're also in demand from collectors and gearheads who also love snow, like two anonymous collectors who are believed to have amassed more than 200 vintage Sno-Cats. The value of vintage models has reportedly tripled in the past five years to well over $100,000 for a fully restored rig. Tucker Sno-Cat Corp. claims to be the world's oldest surviving snow vehicle manufacturer, launched by E.M. Tucker in 1942 out of a desire to design a vehicle for traveling over the kind of deep, soft snow found in the Rogue River Valley of his childhood. It was four Tucker Sno-Cat machines that helped English explorer Vivian Fuchs and his 12-man party make the first 2,158-mile overland crossing of Antarctica in 1957-58. While many of the company's competitors either shuttered or adapted to serving ski resorts with wider, heavier treads, Tucker has stuck to its formula of making lightweight vehicles to travel over deep snow. Many Tuckers use Chrysler's flat six-cylinder engine, or its Dodge Hemi V8 for larger Sno-Cats, mounted rear or centrally, with basic, no-frills aluminum cabins. Sno-Cats all have four articulating tracks that are independently sprung, powered and pivoted at the drive axle. Track options come in three different types: conventional steel grouser belt track, rubber-coated aluminum grouser belt track, and one-piece all-rubber track. Steering is hydraulically controlled by pivoting the front and rear axles for smooth movement over undulating terrain with minimal disturbance of the ground cover. The company today makes 75 to 100 Sno-Cats a year for customers including the U.S. military, oil-drilling crews in cold places like Alaska and North Dakota, and utilities. But demand is so high that it's launched a profitable service reselling and refurbishing old machines. E.M. Tucker's grandson, Jeff McNeil, now head of this division, scours Google Earth for abandoned Sno-Cats rusting in backyards that he might be able to acquire and fix up.
Chrysler Recalls Over 566,000 Trucks, SUVs
Wed, Oct 29 2014Fiat Chrysler is recalling more than 566,000 trucks and SUVs in two recalls for malfunctioning fuel heaters that can cause fires and a software glitch can disable the electronic stability control. The recalls bring the newly merged company's total for the year to 6.4 million vehicles worldwide and 5.1 million in the U.S. as it continues to struggle with reliability problems. It was not immediately clear whether those totals were annual records. On Tuesday, its longtime quality chief abruptly left after Fiat Chrysler performed poorly in Consumer Reports magazine's annual reliability rankings. The largest of two recalls announced Wednesday covers almost 382,000 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups and Ram 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs from 2010 through 2014. In trucks with 6.7-Liter Cummins diesel engines, corrosion on a fuel heater terminal could cause overheating, fuel leaks and fires. Chrysler is not aware of any fires or injuries. Owners could be warned by an odor of diesel fuel. Customers will be notified by letters starting in December. Dealers will install upgraded terminals and fuel heater housings could be replaced. The second recall covers more than 184,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango SUVs from 2014. A debris cover over a circuit board in the steering column control module can disrupt communications and disable the stability control. The problem was discovered when dealers started getting reports from customers that electronic stability control warning lights were coming on. Fiat Chrysler says it knows of no crashes or injuries caused by the problem. Technicians will upgrade software to fix the SUVs, and customers will be notified in December. Fiat Chrysler has issued 33 global recalls and 27 in the U.S. so far this year. Doug Betts, its longtime quality chief, left the company to pursue other options after Consumer Reports' survey-based rankings this year showed four FiatChrysler brands at the bottom of its list. Dodge, Ram, Jeep and Fiat performed worst of 28 brands ranked by the magazine. Company spokesman Eric Mayne said Fiat Chrysler's recalls average fewer than 200,000 vehicles each, below the industry average of 301,000. That means the company is responding quickly to problems, he said, adding that eight of its 27 U.S. recalls were announced before the company received any consumer complaints. Chrysler is not alone with a high number of recalls so far this year.
