2022 New York Auto Show Roundup | All the reveals, reviews, pictures
Fri, Apr 15 2022NEW YORK — In case you missed it, the New York Auto Show took place this year after being canceled in both 2020 and 2021 due to Covid. A lot of manufacturers showed up in force, but not everybody did. No matter, we were there, and we brought you news, photos and scoops from the floor throughout the show. All of our New York-related stories can be found at our central hub here, but if youÂ’d rather just get a small taste of everything in a quick and digestible format, keep scrolling. 2023 Kia Telluride and its new X-Pro trim Kia revealed the TellurideÂ’s first major refresh at New York, and it makes the three-row crossover a little bit more desirable without screwing up what we liked about it before. ThereÂ’s a new X-Line and X-Pro trim for someone who might want a little more off-road capability, and a number of tech improvements. Most notably, a newly-designed dash features new and bigger screens. 2023 Hyundai Palisade The TellurideÂ’s sister car from Hyundai was treated to a similar refresh. Like the Telluride, Hyundai gave the Palisade a slightly revised look, a new off-road trim (called XRT in the PalisadeÂ’s case), more tech inside and a new dash design with full-width air vents. If we had to choose, weÂ’re a little more impressed with the TellurideÂ’s refresh, as a number of us on staff actually prefer the pre-refresh Palisade styling over the new one. 2023 Jeep Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L This one was inevitable. Jeep revealed the longer, roomier versions of its Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer in New York, and theyÂ’re designated with an “L” at the end of their names. Total length grows by a foot, and the wheelbase goes up by 7 inches versus the standard Wagoneer models. Jeep has essentially allocated all this extra room to the cargo area, as it now offers a staggering 44.2 cubic-feet of space behind the third row. Besides the L, Jeep announced that its new Hurricane inline-six engine would find its first home in the Wagoneer. Efficiency gets a small boost, and power is more than sufficient at either 420 horsepower (standard output) or 510 horsepower (high-output version) from the twin-turbo I-6. Chrysler Airflow Graphite Concept The Stellantis party continues with Chrysler and its slightly revised Airflow. Re-styled for the New York market after initially debuting at CES in Las Vegas, the Airflow Concept gets new paint, changed accent colors, a slightly changed interior design and a new interpretation of the Chrysler logo.
Man escapes attempted carjacking and catches the incident on his dashcam
Fri, Dec 9 2016(Warning: video contains strong language. Viewer discretion is advised.) A quick-thinking driver avoided a potentially dangerous situation this week in New Mexico when he evaded and attempted car jacking. On the evening of December 6, an unnamed man accompanied a friend to a market near the intersection of Central and San Mateo in Albuquerque. After he saw his friend safely away in her car, he got back into his and pulled out of the parking lot. Almost immediately, as shown in dashcam footage uploaded to Youtube, a red Chrysler 300 began following him. When the driver pulled up to a stop sign around the block from the market, the Chrysler zipped around and pulled in front of him, blocking his forward progress. Figuring he was about to be carjacked, the driver threw the car into reverse and backed quickly away from the Chrysler. The Chrysler followed, and a chase ensured. With the Chrysler close on his tail, the unnamed driver fled through the nearly empty streets. At one point he cut through a gas station when the Chrysler tried to block him at another intersection. As they drove through the city the Chrysler continually tried to stop the fleeing driver, but he successfully evaded every time. The driver called 911 and reported his predicament. Eventually, both vehciles pulled up at a stop light right next to an Albuquerque Police cruiser. The driver laid on the horn to get the cop's attention, then jumped out to tell the cop what was going on. The Chrysler then made a run for it with the cop in hot pursuit. Unfortunately, the red Chrysler evaded the APD and the car's license plate was obscured so the APD was unable to identify the vehicle or its occupants. Thankfully no one was hurt during the chase, and the driver was able to get home safe and sound. Carjacking is a serious crime. The driver in this video did everything right, except maybe delay calling the police a little too long. The crime is so prevalent that the US Department of Justice has tips for avoiding carjacking. They suggest drivers avoiding stopping when signaled by other drivers or assisting during an accident. Calling the authorities should be your first step if you're every followed or harassed while driving. Head to the nearest police station if you can't get a hold of a cop in time. America was the unexpected theme at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show thanks to Trump
Wed, Jan 11 2017President-elect Donald Trump was not in attendance at this year's Detroit Auto Show, but it sure seemed like he was the target audience for many of the press conferences and announcements surrounding the event. Several manufacturers chose to play up existing and future commitments to the US in general and American jobs specifically in their presentations to the press, and we're pretty sure that has everything to do with Trump's recent targeting of automakers on Twitter. To us, it seemed automakers were going on the offensive to try and preempt any future tweet-shaming for investing in auto manufacturing anywhere but the US. The pro-America sentiment started the week prior to the auto show, with Ford announcing that it would build several future electrified vehicles at its Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan and also cancel a $1.6 billion factory planned for Mexico. Ford announced the two items on the same day, but the reality is that they likely have no relation to each other; the Mexican plant is being skipped because the company doesn't need the extra capacity to build the Ford Focus right now. Trump was still happy to share the news on Twitter. Then, on Sunday, FCA announced it would invest $1 billion in manufacturing plants in Ohio and Michigan to produce the new Jeep Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer, and Wrangler-based pickup. It's not as though those potential new jobs were on their way out of the US, necessarily, but FCA took the opportunity to mention that plant upgrades at the Warren Truck Plant would allow the company to build Ram heavy duty trucks, which are currently assembled in Mexico, there. CEO Sergio Marchionne confirmed that Trump and his proposed tariffs had nothing to do with the decision. We certainly believe that, but we also have to believe that the timing of the release, positive outcome for America, and zero gain for Mexico were all orchestrated. Again, Trump sent out a victory tweet as if this had been his doing. Ford then used its press conference at the show on Monday to reiterate the plans for Flat Rock and also confirm that the Ford Bronco and Ranger nameplates will be returning to the US market, and that both will be built at a plant in Michigan. Announcements of manufacturing locations are usually aimed at the UAW, which certainly has a stake in these things, but again this one was broadcast to the auto show crowd in general.
