"America's most carefully built car" - that was the ad copy for the 1962 Imperial.  It was not just hype, the car was the pinnacle of American quality and design.  Featuring a 413 CID V-8, the Imperial produced 340 hp and 470 ft pounds of torque.  Despite its massive 4800 pounds, it still could turn in a respectable 0-60 time of 9.4 seconds and top out at 120 mph.  Tom McCahill wrote " . . . the '62 Imperial is the best sedan made in the world today . . .".

The Imperial came standard with a host of equipment such as power windows (including vent windows) and power seats, but then it should for its $6,422 base price.  A well-optioned LeBaron could run in excess of $7,500 in 1962.  Imperial was sufficiently outstanding that a jaded old automotive write like Tom McCahill was impressed enough to own one as his personal car.

This 1962 Imperial LeBaron has a little over 88k actual miles.  The car has never been abused and has always been maintained.  The only option I am aware of that it does not have is the rear A/C.  It does, of course, have the front A/C which cools the entire interior.  The car is a pleasure to drive and has impeccable road manners.  The cruise control is fully operable.

The paint was redone several years ago (before I purchased the car in 2005) in the original metallic blue.  It has an excellent shine.  There are no dings or scratches on the car.  The chrome and trim are in excellent condition.

Since I have had the car, I have had the transmission rebuilt ($1000), the clock converted to quartz, the gauge cluster restored and rebuilt ($1000), various suspension upgrades to restore the ride and handling ($1400), the ignition converted to electronic ($200), and, most importantly, the engine completely rebuilt by Jasper Engines at a cost of $8,000.  Total mileage added to the car since these repairs is about 2k.

I would like to stress that this is not a perfect #1 show car that would sell for $30-40k, But it is in very good good to excellent cosmetic (interior and exterior) and mechanical condition with no defects that I am aware of.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Court ruling to delay Fiat's Chrysler buyout?

Thu, 01 Aug 2013

We've already reported on the attempts of Fiat to purchase the remaining 41.5-percent stake in Chrysler, currently owned by the United Auto Workers' VEBA healthcare trust. And while the issues still aren't resolved, Fiat has received both a bit of good news and a bit of bad news from a Delaware judge.
The good news is that the court ruled in favor on two key arguments of Fiat's, relating to what is a fair price for the Chrysler shares. The rulings essentially slash half a billion dollars off the price of the 54,000 shares owned by VEBA, according to a report from Reuters.
The bad news is that this makes the UAW an even more difficult opponent in negotiations. Its VEBA fund is meant to cover ever escalating retiree healthcare costs, so naturally, the UAW wants to get as much money as possible. Losing a big chunk of cash isn't likely to make the union more cooperative.

Chrysler 300C John Varvatos Limited Edition returns for 2014 with AWD option

Thu, 30 Jan 2014

Before last year, many of us car guys had no idea who John Varvatos was. That all changed when the Detroit-native fashion designer lent his talents to the Chrysler 300 to create the snazzy, special-edition 300C John Varvatos models. The fashionable sedan returns for 2014 with two versions (Luxury and Limited), and the only big news here is that the latter model will be getting an optional all-wheel-drive system.
Distinguishing the Luxury and Limited models, the Luxury comes with Platinum exterior accents and is offered in a handful of colors while the Limited gets darker Titanium accents and only comes with a Phantom Black Tri-Coat paint job. Both cars get an exclusive interior design with special leathers, patterns and colors worthy of the designer's name and logo. The JV Edition is the only 300C to offer a V6 engine, but V8 lovers can still opt up for the powerful Hemi engine.
It would appear that the Luxury Edition is already on sale, but you'll have to wait until March for the 2014 JV Limited Edition, which, according to a Chrysler spokesperson, will be "limited from a production timing standpoint." The JV Luxury Edition starts at $41,195 and the Limited Edition will have a starting price of $44,480 (*not including $995 for destination) - both cars can be optioned with all-wheel drive for $2,500. Scroll down for the press release on the 300C John Varvatos Limited Edition.

Ten of the greatest Super Bowl car commercials of all time

Thu, Jan 28 2016

With an average of over 100 million viewers each year, the Super Bowl always has advertisers bringing out the big guns. And for those among us who don't know the difference between a safety and a touchback, those commercials can be one of the most compelling aspects of the annual ritual. Car companies, in particular, have a long history of making the most of the huge Super Bowl audience by debuting some of the most memorable advertisements that have ever aired on television. So, in preparation for the new batch we'll be seeing this coming Sunday, here's a collection of our favorites from the past. 10. Audi – The Godfather When Audi created this homage to the quintessential gangster movie to promote its newest sports car, the company managed to make a commercial that was simultaneously funny, a little bit disturbing, and most importantly memorable. 9. Maserati – Strike This one might start out slow, but it delivers not only with the wicked sound of the third-generation Ghibli's engine, but with an interesting message about hubris in the auto industry as well. 8. Nissan 300ZX Twin-Turbo – Dream Directed by none other than Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Alien), this dystopian spot has centers around a narrator who explains that in his dream the bad guys are unable to catch him despite their best efforts by way of street bikes, race cars, and supersonic jets. While the twin-turbocharged 300ZX car was certainly a performance powerhouse to be reckoned with in its day, the concept and execution of this one does come off a little bit campy now – but in a good way. Then again, it is a dream, after all. 7. General Motors – Robot This one is unique in that it's genuinely depressing on a profound level. Who would've thought that the simulated suicide of a lovable, anthropomorphic car-building robot who has fallen on hard times could be such a downer? 6. Nissan – With Dad Although the debut season of its new LMP1 racer didn't exactly turn out how the team hoped it would, there's no denying that Nissan's depiction of a strained father-and-son relationship that eventually leads to redemption (and the introduction of the 2016 Maxima) tugs at the heartstrings. 5. Volkswagen – Big Day A surprisingly poignant advert, this one might be low on dialogue but it certainly gets its message across. And just as the dramatic soundtrack begins to lull the viewer into a sense of security, our expectations are upended. 4.
