Only 750 of these great automobiles were built from 1946 through 1948 at a base price of $4,305 weighing in at 4,875 pounds.  Very few remain.  The Chrysler C40 models are accepted as Full Classics by the Classic Car Club of America.  This is a “Restomod” meaning it has the timeless appearance of the original, but updated with later technology to provide a much better, dependable and comfortable ride.

5,000 miles since a factory new crate delivered “Mr. Goodwrench” 350 Chevrolet V8 engine was installed in 2006, automatic turbo transmission, power assisted steering, dual air conditioning, stereo system, hydraulic division window.

The Odometer shows approximately 32,000 miles (just over 500 miles per year since new) and judging from the overall condition and the undercarriage it appears to be the original mileage on this Classic.  The wheel wells, floorboards, engine bay, trunk, and undercarriage are clean with no rust apparent in these areas – ever.  It appears this example was rarely left out of the garage and always well maintained.

The chrome, stainless steel trim and original hubcaps are exceptional very nice.  Rubber door and other seals were replaced, radial whitewall tires, new carpet, headliner and upholstery.  Folding “opera” or “jump” seats are a special feature of the Crown Imperial Limousine.  New gauges have been installed below the center of the dash, the original speedometer and odometer are operational as well. The hydraulic operated division window operates smoothly.  Dual air conditioning and heat can be controlled in both front and rear.  The Imperial has an AM/FM Stereo with CD player with front and rear stereo speakers. The vacuum operated windshield wipers were converted to the more efficient electrical type.

The Crown Imperial gets “thumbs up” wherever it goes.  When occasionally valet parked at restaurants or events, it is always placed up front ahead of new Rolls Royce, Ferraris, etc.

A Chrysler Crown Imperial Limousine chauffeured Elizabeth Taylor and Nicky Hilton on their wedding day in 1950.

It starts easily and drives smoothly at freeway speeds.  AC may need recharging as it has been sitting over the past year.  Additional photos and information on my amateur website:  www.pacificnewportclassics.com

Critical comments.  I am used to show restorations, so my comments may be too critical, but here there are:  This was a professional restoration for daily driving comfort.  While it is very presentable and could be shown with pride, it is not a show car, functionality and comfort having been primary goals. I note one of the speaker covers is off in one of the photos, I believe it is under the seat and simply needs to be reinstalled. The interior wood and trim is in its original unrestored condition. The paint has a minor few nicks and scratches, but no dents or dings. It has one small surface rust spot on the bottom of the passenger side door which you can see in the close up photo.

Restomod (restoration + modern parts/technology) draws from all the advancements in automobile technology over the past 40+ years to enhance the performance, comfort and safety of the Classic car. A Restomod car has the timeless appearance of the original, but the outdated guts of the car have been replaced with the more modern, high-performance parts of today. You achieve the same great look, but your vintage car will be revved up with all the latest bells and whistles to create a much better ride for the owner.

Junkyard Gem: 1977 Chrysler Cordoba with Corinthian Leather

Mon, Jul 25 2016

The Chrysler Cordoba has become emblematic of an era full of underpowered, overdecorated Detroit land yachts, stuffed with plasticky heraldic crests and allusions to classy European vacation destinations. In fact, the 1975-1979 Cordoba was a pretty decent car by the standards of Malaise Era America, based on the same well-proven (if increasingly antiquated) platform used by the '69 Charger and the Plymouth Superbird, and it sold like crazy. Of course, what we remember these days is the name of the optional leather upholstery used in the Cordoba. Yes, soft ( not rich) Corinthian leather, which was a brilliant marketing name given to a cheap grade of leather from Newark, NJ. This content is hosted by a third party. The Corinthian Leather jokes began quite soon after the Cordoba went on sale, as we can see in this 1980s Ricardo Montalban interview. This car, which I photographed a couple of weeks ago in a San Francisco Bay Area self-service wrecking yard is completely used up, and it shows signs of having spent a good decade or two abandoned in a field somewhere. Still, from the purple paint to the once-snazzy "leather" landau roof (note the molded-in stitches) to the "golden" (plastic, in fact) Cordoba medallions on the taillights, door panels, and steering wheel, the Cordoba was the closest thing to the "Super Fly" Cadillac you could buy new from Detroit. This one has the LA-series 360-cubic-inch V8 engine, which made 155 horsepower. That's 23 fewer horses than the weakest engine you can get in the US-market 2017 Toyota Camry... but try getting a Camry with soft Corinthian Leather! Fiat Chrysler's Marchionne is done talking about alliances

Sat, Apr 15 2017

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Fiat Chrysler Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne rowed back on his search for a merger on Friday, saying the car maker was not in a position to seek deals for now and would focus instead on following its business plan. Marchionne had repeatedly called for mergers in the car industry and a tie-up has long been seen as the ultimate aim of his relaunch of Fiat Chrysler, which he is due to leave in early 2019 after 15 years at the helm. He sought a merger with General Motors two years ago but was rebuffed. Only last month he said Volkswagen - the market leader in Europe - may agree to discuss a tie-up with FCA in reaction to rival PSA Group's acquisition of Opel. Marchionne told the annual general meeting in Amsterdam he still saw the need for car companies to merge to better shoulder the large investments needed, but said Fiat Chrysler was not talking to Volkswagen. "On the Volkswagen issue, on the question if there are ongoing discussions, the answer is no," he said. He added, without elaborating, that Fiat Chrysler was not at a stage where it could discuss any alliances. "The primary focus is the execution of the plan," he said. FCA has pledged to swing to a 5 billion euro net cash position by 2018, from net debt of 4.6 billion euros at the end of 2016 - an achievement that Marchionne has said would put it in a better position to strike a deal in the future. Volkswagen, which is still reeling from an emissions scandal that hurt its profits, initially spurned FCA's approach. However, CEO Matthias Mueller said last month the group had become more open on the issue of tie-ups and invited Marchionne to speak to him directly rather than with the press. Fiat Chrysler Chairman John Elkann underlined the message that finding a merger partner was not a priority. "I'm not interested in a big merger deal," he said. "Historically, deals are struck at times of difficulty ... we don't want to be in trouble." Elkann is the scion of Fiat's founder and top shareholder the Agnelli family. He has said in the past he was prepared to have the Agnelli's stake severely diluted in exchange for a minority holding in a larger auto group. "I believe the priority for FCA is to press ahead with this ambitious (business) plan despite the difficult environment," he said. FCA pledged in January to nearly halve net debt this year, as part of the 2018 plan. Doubts remain about its exposure to a peaking U.S.

2017 Chevy Camaro Z/28 Nurburgring crash caught on video

Thu, May 12 2016

A 2017 Chevy Camaro Z/28 prototype crashed Thursday morning during testing on the Nurburgring in Germany. The driver appears to be unharmed, and the Camaro was not severely damaged. You can see the crash happen near the 1:35 mark of the video. Everything is going fine as the camo-clad Camaro accelerates onto the 'Ring. But as the driver goes through a turn the back wheels lock up. The driver then nails the brakes, the front wheels lock up, and he careens into the rail, getting airborne in the process briefly. The driver then navigates the Camaro to the other side of the circuit. A crumpled front fender and maimed aero is the only damage. View 11 Photos Mishap aside, this is an excellent look at what we believe is the track-focused Camaro Z/28. We see the huge wing in back and smaller winglets in front reminiscent of the Corvette Z06's Z07 Performance Pack. The new Z/28 has a throaty, almost buzzy V8 sound. We predict the seven-speed manual transmission from the Corvette, and perhaps the new 10-speed automatic trans from the Camaro ZL1, will be available. This prototype has a huge, gaping grille, blacked out wheels, and an aggressive front splitter. Look for the Z/28 to go on sale next year. A General Motors spokesperson said the company doesn't comment on development testing, but noted that "safety is our overriding priority." Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party.
