Chrysler slows minivan production, hasn't built VW Routan this year
Wed, 13 Mar 2013Chrysler has slowed production of its Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans this week, Automotive News reports. The Windsor, Ontario plant will cut its three shifts from eight hours each to four hours each in an effort "to align production with market demand," a Chrysler spokesperson told AN. Chrysler also builds the closely related Routan minivan for Volkswagen at its Ontario facility, but has not built a single example thus far in 2013.
Sales of Chrysler's minivans fell 15 percent for the first two months of 2013, and a large part of that has to do with the 26-percent drop of the Grand Caravan alone (the T&C was only down by one percent). According to Automotive News data, as of March 1, Chrysler had an unsold inventory of 24,713 Town and Country models and 18,547 Grand Caravans - a 69- and 43-day supply, respectively.
"No sense running full speed now, then have a lot of vehicles sitting around a few months down the line," Chrysler spokeswoman Jodi Tinson told AN. Full production is expected to resume again on March 18.
Worker crushed to death at FCA's Jefferson North Assembly Plant [UPDATE]
Tue, May 5 2015Tragedy has struck a Fiat Chrysler factory. According to emerging reports, a worker was killed at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant early this morning in Detroit. The incident reportedly occurred in the waste water treatment facility at the plant, just after 7 a.m. this morning. The 53-year-old worker, whose name has not yet been released, is said to have been crushed in a press and was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is currently under investigation to determine the exact circumstances. Jefferson North is where FCA assembles the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango. The plant is located on Conner Street near East Jefferson Avenue in Detroit. We've reached out to FCA US for the official statement, and will update you as soon as more details are available. Our condolences go out to the late worker's family and friends. UPDATE: Official statement from FCA added below. FCA US has had a tragic accident at its Jefferson North Assembly Plant during the first shift this morning. A plant employee died at the waste water treatment plant. The Company is currently working with local officials to investigate the incident. The name of the employee is not being released at this time. Has Dodge stepped in it again with Scat Pack lawsuit?
Mon, 20 Oct 2014Lawsuits are an unfortunate part of doing business in just about any industry, so the latest complaint filed by a California-based aftermarket firm against Chrysler would seem to be nothing more than business as usual. But this isn't the first time the two companies have sparred over this particular issue.
According to a report from Automotive News, the dispute revolves around the Scat Pack name that Chrysler first offered on the Charger, Coronet, Dart and Super Bee starting in 1968. Scat Enterprises, a manufacturer of crankshafts and other components for Dodges and other vehicles, sued Chrysler for using its name. A few years later the Scat Pack disappeared from the Dodge catalog.
Fast forward to August 2013 when Chrysler applied to register the Scat Pack name anew. The US Patent and Trademark Office turned down Chrysler's application, but the automaker proceeded anyway, unveiling new Scat Packs for the Challenger, Charger and Dart at last year's SEMA show.
