Thank you for checking out my auction on this beautiful 1953 Chrysler Town and Country Wagon.

I (Merrill) purchased this car back in 2001 to use as a secondary nostalgic and fun get around town car.  It's a rare, high powered classic wagon that was hard to find as only 1,399 were reported made in America.  I love the car but have become too busy with other business interests so I'm not able to drive and enjoy it as much as I'd like.  It's time to find this wonderful wagon a nice new home.

It has a great, rust free body with a totally rebuilt motor, transmission and and general mechanics.  The 331 ci V8 (which later became the HEMI) roars strong and the semi automatic three speed transmission shifts smooth.  The car was a joy to drive and use for many years as purchased but then I made the decision to restore and refresh parts of its cosmetic condition to include:

  • Body stripped from its second paint work from new. The paint was properly reapplied with the correct color and finish from factory specs, and original to this car.

  • 90% of all the chrome removed and re chromed . The stainless was polished and reinstalled.

  • All the interior was removed and the original (and expensive) faux alligator interior material correctly installed. This include the wool headliner and correct corded wool carpets.

  • Mechanical parts were inspected and generally maintained as any repairs were needed.  Other than regular fluid changes and service, it really only needed an electronic ignition and a fresh pair of 6 volt batteries which were replaced in the past year.

  • To maintain original aspects, the radio was removed and tubes replaced and works as it should.

I have a 2" file of all the paperwork for all maintenance and items I've purchased for this car from the time I purchased it in 2001 to date.  My mechanic has over 55 patents for MOPAR and has maintained this car with documented files and total 100% knowledge of this car and its needs and requirements.

Current Cosmetic issues:

  • The paint is 3 years old and was ideally applied and with high sheen, without orange peel or body waves.  It has not had its final wet sand and polish yet, but will be done before sale.

  • The interior requires one piece of carpet re-trimmed.

Comparable Cars:

From time to time similar vehicles are auctioned off at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auctions and often sell for $45k plus.  Here are a couple recent listings I found.

Sold for $52,800

Sold for $66,000

The Town and Country I am selling is not as nice as these, but my reserve is much less considering it needs some minor tweaking.  With minimum effort this Wagon could be quite a show car.

If you have any questions, the easiest way to get a hold of me is a phone call, so please feel free to give me (Merrill) a ring before 9pm EST at 843-452-5600.

The Walter P. Chrysler Museum is shutting down permanently this December

Thu, Nov 10 2016

It is with disappointment that we report the Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills, MI, will be closed down permanently at the end of this year. The museum, which closed in 2012 after not being able to cover costs, was recently reopened to the public on alternating weekends starting in June, but Chrysler made the decision to shutter it altogether after its final day of operation on December 18, 2016. The reason for this is primarily because FCA needs more office space, and the company decided to convert the museum for that purpose. The the cars will be moved to storage after the closure, and they'll be shown at various events. However, they'll only be able to be seen together for two more weekends. Those weekends include those of November 19 and 20, and December 17 and 18. The museum will be open from 10 am to 4 pm on those days. If you can, we highly recommend visiting the museum. Adults get in for $10, seniors and retired FCA employees for $8, kids between 6 and 17 for $6, and kids under 5 for free. It also has some fantastic cars including concepts from the 1950s to the 2000s, oddball performance vehicles such as the Omni GLH-S, and of course plenty of fascinating history. And if it makes any difference to you, there's even a purple Plymouth Prowler you can sit in. Just make sure you don't wait too long to make up your mind about visiting. Related Video:

2015 will be the biggest year ever for cars at CES

Fri, Jan 2 2015

Like the SEMA Show, major automakers are paying increasing attention to the CES, with 2015 expected to be one of the most auto focused yet. Ford, Volkswagen, Toyota, General Motors, Hyundai, Mazda, Audi, BMW and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will all be in attendance when CES 2015 kicks off next week, taking up a record-breaking 165,000 square feet of space at the Las Vegas Convention Center. "We've come a long way from a single car on a carpet," Ford's Alan Hall told Bloomberg. Unlike SEMA, or a more traditional auto show, like the upcoming festivities in Detroit, CES doesn't necessarily focus on entire cars or the way they perform, but on the way our technology will interact with vehicles, and in how those vehicles will deliver information to drivers. "CES has become a major launch point for a lot of the big automakers," IHS tech analyst Mark Boyadjis told Bloomberg. "CES is a way for them to get on a global stage for technology." As for what kind of wares automakers will trot out in Las Vegas, we already know that BMW will show off an autonomous i3 electric car that can navigate its way through a multistory car park and can be hailed via a smartwatch app. According to Bloomberg, Hyundai will show off its own smartwatch app for the Genesis sedan, while Audi and Mercedes-Benz will show off autonomous vehicles next week. Automakers won't be the only companies looking to capitalize on CES. Tech firms, like chipmaker Nvidia, are becoming increasingly involved in the automotive game and will be in town showing their wares off to OEMs. "Two years ago, our booth would have been filled with PCs and people playing video games," Danny Shapiro, Nvidia's senior director for automotive business, told Bloomberg. "This year we made a strategic decision to shift the focus of the booth on automotive and de-prioritize some of the other things." Needless to say, you can expect to see a lot of news out of Las Vegas come next week. Stay tuned. Chrysler files for IPO

Tue, 24 Sep 2013

Chrysler has had a lot of owners over the past few years alone, from Daimler to Cerberus to Fiat and the federal government. But it could be poised to gain some more before long. Like, a lot more.
The automaker has just announced that it has filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission to issue an Initial Public Offering of common stocks. Chrysler hasn't revealed how many shares will be offered and at what price, however the shares in question will not come out of Fiat's approximate 60% majority shareholding but instead out of the 40% minority stock held by the UAW's VEBA retiree healthcare trust. Reports suggest that the IPO, which is being handled by JP Morgan, could encompass approximately 16% of Chrysler stock, initially valued at approximately $100 million.
Lest you think this is all part of Sergio Marchionne's grand plan to consolidate Chrysler and Fiat, the two auto groups over which he presides, think again. The filing, which still needs to be approved by the SEC, comes at the insistence of the UAW. Negotiations between Marchionne's management team and the union over Fiat's acquisition of the VEBA shares have stalled. If they manage to come to an agreement, however, the IPO would likely be taken off the table. So don't go calling your broker just yet, but you can analyze the official announcement below.
