European new car sales drop nearly 8% in first half of 2019

PARIS — European car sales dropped 7.9% in June, led by bigger declines for Nissan, Volvo and Fiat Chrysler (FCA), according to industry data published on Wednesday. Registrations fell to 1.49 million cars last month from 1.62 million a year earlier across the European Union and EFTA countries, the Brussels-based Association of European Carmakers said in a statement. Calendar effects resulted in two fewer sales days in most markets, accentuating the decline. Registrations for the first half closed 3.1% lower, ACEA said. For European carmakers, weakening demand at home compounds the pressure from a sharper contraction in China and emerging markets that may yet bring more profit warnings. NissanÂ’s aging model lineup contributed to a 26.6% June sales slump while Volvo Cars, owned by ChinaÂ’s Geely, saw deliveries tumble 21.7%. Registrations also fell 13.5% last month at FCA, 10.1% at BMW, 9.6% at Volkswagen Group and 8.2% for both Mercedes parent Daimler and FranceÂ’s PSA Group. Google car boss: Deal with FCA is just 100 minivans

Google and FCA are working together to develop 100 self-driving minivans, but for now, that's it. So says Google car czar John Krafcik. Google is still talking to other automakers about partnerships, Reuters reports. "This is just FCA and Google building 100 cars together," Krafcik told the wire service at an energy conference in Washington. The companies won't expand the project to building an autonomous car, and Google isn't sharing proprietary technology with FCA. The co-developed vehicles won't be for sale, Reuters said. FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne has also reportedly said the deal isn't exclusive. FCA and Google announced their landmark partnership earlier this month to make 100 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans with self-driving technology. The deal was hailed as a major step in advancing the technology and bridging the gap between traditional automakers and Silicon Valley. "Teaming up with Google helps put FCA in a stronger position to compete when it comes to autonomous car research and development, though significant effort remains to introduce this technology into FCA production vehicles," IHS analyst Colin Bird wrote in a research note. Chrysler to accelerate production of 2013 Ram and V6 engines

Chrysler is adding a third shift at its Warren Truck plant to meet demand for the new 2013 Ram pickup. And with tight supplies of its Pentastar V6, the company is also boosting output at its Mack Engine plant.
The expansions will add 1,250 jobs and are part of a $238 million investment by Chrysler in the Detroit area. Warren's third shift will begin work sometime in the spring, a Chrysler rep told Automotive News. Mack's increased Pentastar production a could include both 3.6 and 3.2-liter engines.
The company says it also plans to invest $40 million in its Trenton Engine plant to allow for production of a 3.2-liter V6 as well as the Tigershark inline-four for the upcoming Jeep Liberty replacement.
