Consumer Reports says these are the worst new cars of 2014

Consumer Reports has announced its annual list of worst vehicles, a cringe-inducing contrast to its list of top vehicles. Ignominiously leading the way in 2014 is Chrysler, which has a staggering seven models listed.
Jeep nearly sweeps the small SUV segment by itself, with its Compass, Patriot and 2.4-liter version of the new Cherokee, while the only midsize sedans listed by CR were the Chrysler 200 and Dodge Avenger. The new Dodge Dart and the Dodge Journey round out CR's condemnation of Chrysler.
Ford is taking heat as well, with the Taurus, Edge and their counterparts from Lincoln all listed as the worst vehicles in their respective segments. Toyota doesn't fare much better, with its Lexus IS, Scion iQ and tC also making the list.

Google car boss: Deal with FCA is just 100 minivans

Google and FCA are working together to develop 100 self-driving minivans, but for now, that's it. So says Google car czar John Krafcik. Google is still talking to other automakers about partnerships, Reuters reports. "This is just FCA and Google building 100 cars together," Krafcik told the wire service at an energy conference in Washington. The companies won't expand the project to building an autonomous car, and Google isn't sharing proprietary technology with FCA. The co-developed vehicles won't be for sale, Reuters said. FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne has also reportedly said the deal isn't exclusive. FCA and Google announced their landmark partnership earlier this month to make 100 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans with self-driving technology. The deal was hailed as a major step in advancing the technology and bridging the gap between traditional automakers and Silicon Valley. "Teaming up with Google helps put FCA in a stronger position to compete when it comes to autonomous car research and development, though significant effort remains to introduce this technology into FCA production vehicles," IHS analyst Colin Bird wrote in a research note. Will the Chrysler 300 go front-wheel drive?

FCA chief executive Sergio Marchionne hinted last week that the strapping rear-wheel-drive Chrysler 300 sedan could go front-wheel drive for its next generation using the underpinnings from the Chrysler Pacifica minivan. Speaking at the Pacifica's production launch in Windsor, ON, Marchionne said, "this plant and this architecture is capable of making the 300 successor, the front-wheel, all-wheel-drive successor," Reuters reported. Perhaps realizing he appeared to be announcing a dramatic shift in product strategy, Marchionne backpedaled in response to a follow-up question, noting only that the Ontario factory is "capable" of making the sedan. "It's capable. It's not a commitment," he said, according to Reuters. The 300 is currently built in Brampton, ON, alongside the mechanically similar Dodge Charger and Challenger. The platform, known as LX in enthusiast circles, is an evolution of Mercedes-based chassis pieces that date to the DaimlerChrysler era. Marchionne's comments didn't cover the Dodges and left a lot open to interpretation. The 300 could switch to front- and all-wheel-drive and focus on a more civilized, elegant ride character, leaving the Charger and two-door Challenger as traditional rear-wheel-drive muscle cars. That strategy would further differentiate the Chrysler and Dodge car lines. Additionally, the Charger's RWD platform makes it a popular police vehicle, and both Dodges are offered in top trim as 707-horsepower Hellcats. Switching to front-wheel drive would seemingly complicate both of those endeavors. Rumors have also swirled that Alfa Romeo could contribute RWD underpinnings for Dodge.
