Fiat Chrysler, surprise, had to buy a lot of emissions credits

The world of carbon emissions uses some unusual units of measure. Take, for example, 8.2 million megagrams. Who needs to know how much that is? Someone at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, that's who. FCA had to buy that many greenhouse-gas emissions credits from greener automakers, Reuters says, citing a report from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Because its vehicles' collective fuel economy continues to trail the industry average, FCA purchased the emissions credits at of the end of 2014 in order to meet US emissions regulations. About two-thirds of those credits were acquired from Toyota, while the rest were purchased from Tesla and Honda. Daimler and Ferrari, not surprisingly, were among the other automobile companies that had to acquire emissions credits in order to meet US greenhouse gas regulations. Because the price for these credits is set privately by the companies, the EPA didn't disclose how much FCA had to pay to stay on the green side. The reason for the millions FCA likely spent is because the company is making a slow progress building and selling cleaner cars. The company did increase average fuel efficiency by about one mile per gallon to almost 22 mpg for the 2015 model year, but it wasn't enough. Such a performance likely only put the automaker in a last-place tie with General Motors. The emissions credits purchased from Tesla are notable because that California-based maker of electric vehicles has long generated substantial revenue by selling various credits to its less-electrified counterparts. In 2013, Tesla sold more of California's ZEV credits than any other automaker, but Nissan took that title in 2014. While these are not the same as the EPA's GHG credits, they do offer another way to track which automakers are meeting the targets and which need help. This 1958 Chrysler Imperial Ultra 7 Pointer 1 is Japan's Batmobile

It might be sacrilegious to admit among some auto enthusiasts, but there's more to driving than performance and speed. Sometimes it can be a matter of love, as it is for Yasushi Shiroi, who has spent the last 21 years building a faithful replica of a car from a '60s Japanese sci-fi show.
Shiroi's car is the star of the latest video from The Aficionauto and it's truly a labor of love. This machine, which is sort of like a Japanese Batmobile, is based on a 1958 Chrysler Imperial and is designed to recreate a car called the Pointer 1 from the series Ultra 7. The latter was apparently hugely popular when it ran in Japan in 1967 and 1968, and told the story a seven-member team that fought off aliens attacking Earth. While the car in the series never actually ran, Shiroi wanted one that would.
The Pointer 1 has been in constant development since Shiroi has owned it. All of the body modifications have been done in steel, but mechanically, it remains something of a mess. This replica might be slow - and to many people, ugly - but it has brought its owner about as much happiness as a car can, and that's something worth celebrating. Scroll down to check it out.

You can own Don Draper's 1964 Imperial Crown Convertible

In AMC's Mad Men Jon Hamm's character may have been a jerk, but Don Draper's 1964 Imperial Crown Convertible is fantastic. One of just 922 droptop Imperials built for 1964, Draper's land yacht is up for auction as part of a broader sale of Mad Men props. Alongside stuff like Roger Sterling's Ray-Bans or Draper's copy of Dante Alighieri's Inferno, the big Imperial is the undisputed star of the show. According to the auction page, fewer than 200 exist today, meaning that even without its Hollywood provenance, this is an exceedingly rare vehicle. Under hood, there's a 413-cubic-inch V8 wedge mated up to a push-button, three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. Typical of a big, 1960s luxury vehicle, the Imperial gets power steering, power brakes, and power windows. Even the roof is electric. Cosmetically, the auction site claims Draper's convertible was repainted once, 20 years ago, going from a "drab" Roman Dark Red to today's California Red. In the interior, the only change are new carpets. This isn't the first time Draper's Imperial has crossed the auction block. It sold at a Palm Springs auction in February 2015 for just $23,625, before a St. Louis dealership listed it on eBay for $39,900 less than a month later. That online listing has long since disappeared, so there's no telling if it actually sold or not before being listed as part of this latest auction. Regardless, with fewer than 1,000 made, fewer than 200 in existence, a credit on a critically acclaimed TV show, and a history of reasonable sale prices, this is one big, 1960s land yacht worth considering.
