Chrysler expecting up to 200,000 9-speed transmissions for 3 models this year

Striving for improved fuel economy, we already knew that Chrysler will begin using a nine-speed automatic transmission in some of its new products this year, but what we haven't known is that volume at which this gearbox will be used. According to Bloomberg, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has been quoted as saying that the automaker expects to sell close to 200,000 units equipped with this new transmission in 2013. Those gear-rich trannies will be spread out across three models, consisting of the redesigned Chrysler 200, the still-unnamed Jeep Liberty replacement and the Dodge Dart.
This transmission should play a pivotal role in making Chrysler vehicles more competitive in their respective segments. Just for comparison, one of the Dart's key competitors, the Toyota Corolla, still uses a four-speed automatic, and a previous report indicates that the next-generation 200 could get up to 38 miles per gallon on the highway, which is better than most non-hybrid midsize sedans on the market. Marchionne says that the new Jeep model is expected during the second quarter of this year, but there is no word as to when the new 200 or nine-speed Dart will debut, but clearly Dodge would like to have the transmission in its compact yesterday. As for that volume figure, it definitely doesn't seem out of reach since the Dart, Liberty and 200 combined for a total of more than 225,000 units in 2012.
How many more gears can we expect in future cars? Probably not many more, since the CEO of transmission-builder ZF, Stefan Sommer, previously stated that nine speeds was the "natural limit" for transmissions.

Supplier says Jeep Cherokee hack only affects FCA cars

Harman doesn't think that drivers need to worry about any further hacks of its products. The company supplies FCA's Uconnect infotainment system where a software vulnerability is responsible for a 1.4-million vehicle recall. "This experimental hack is unique to Chrysler," Harman CEO Dinesh Paliwal said to Automotive News. "This does not exist, to our assessment, in any other vehicle." The reason that the company wouldn't be involved is that automakers aren't simply plugging in the existing infotainment systems into new vehicles. According to Paliwal, Harman supplies the unit, but FCA and other automakers are able to make additional modifications for their vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has also recently taken up the question of broader software vulnerabilities in Harman's products. On July 29, the agency began investigating the company to check for similarities between Uconnect and the infotainment systems supplied to other automakers. The Jeep hack became national news when two researchers were remotely able to take control of a Cherokee. The vulnerability in the cellular connection even gave control over the brakes. "Once people get in the car and get into the CAN bus, then you can start to mimic and mess up many, many things in the car," Paliwal said to Automotive News. Politicians immediately responded with legislation to create federal standards in hopes of protecting drivers better. A lot of people go shopping for deals on TVs or computers around the holiday season, but it looks like some folks are finding some fantastic deals on cars too. Take the Chrysler 200 for example. The new sedan had a great November in terms of sales, and by Chrysler's numbers, it delivered 14,317 of them for the month, a 155 percent increase from the same month last year. It even beat the November 2013 sales of the old 200 and Dodge Avenger combined. However, a report from Daily Kanban based on TrueCar data suggests that the good month came at least in part from steep incentives. Based on 20,156 sales of the 200 from TrueCar's database, average transaction prices were about $2,500 to $4,000 under MSRP for all but the base LX front-wheel drive model. That one actually went for about $68 above the typical base price. Going by these numbers, most people could have bought nearly any trim cheaper than the listed price of the one above it. For example, the top C AWD averaged $27,423, less money than the stated MSRP of the lower-spec S AWD. TrueCar's website also shows 200 pricing dipping in the latter part of November and into early December. There's no doubt that the 200 had a stellar month for November. But these figures suggest that it might have come partially because buyers found stacks of money on 200 hoods, while out doing some holiday shopping. Related Video:
