Murdered-out minivan: 2018 Chrysler Pacifica gets new S package

Wed, Oct 11 2017

Minivans are generally considered cool in an ironic sort of way. No one drives a Honda Odyssey or Chrysler Pacifica because it's hip. People drive minivans because no other type of vehicle offers such a good mix of fuel economy, practicality and space efficiency. Still, automakers are doing their damndest to make sure kids set sail from school in the best-looking breadbox around. In order to spice things up, Chrysler is now offering the S appearance package on the Pacifica. Chrysler offers a similar package on the 300. On the Pacifica, the $595 S package can be added to any Touring Plus, Touring L, Touring L Plus or Limited models. The Pacifica S gets gloss black accents on the front and rear fascias including the grille, headlights and rear valance. The Chrysler wing badges on the front and rear are both done up in gloss black. A black roof rack is optional on the Touring Plus and standard on all other trims. 18-inch wheels are standard while 20-inch wheels can be added to any S-equipped car for an additional $995. The interior gets blacks seats with grey accents and the S logo. The steering wheel gets grey stitching and piano black accents, while the instrument cluster and door panels get trim in what Chrysler is calling Anodized Ice Cave. Really, it just looks like a different shade of grey. The front overhead console, headliner, visors, second- and third-row cargo lighting bezel, A-pillar trim and center console are all done up in black. Other changes for 2018 include standard SafetyTec, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on all models. 4G LTE WiFi will be optional. 2018 Chrysler Pacificas will hit dealer showrooms in the next few months. Google's deal with FCA is the 'first phase' of partnership

Tue, May 3 2016

Google and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles confirmed a partnership Tuesday in which the two companies will collaborate on creating autonomous minivans. The two companies will work together to build and test approximately 100 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans, and they first of the bunch could hit the road by the end of the year. This marks the first time Google has worked with a traditional automaker in designing a self-driving car since the start of its autonomous project in 2009. "FCA will design the minivans so it's easy for us to install our self-driving systems, including the computers that hold our self-driving software and the sensors that enable our software to see what's on the road around the vehicle," Google said in a written statement. "The minivan design also gives us an opportunity to test a larger vehicle that could be easier for passengers to enter and exit, particularly with features like hands-free sliding doors." "Those of us in the tech industry recognize how hard it is to build cars." – Jennifer Haroon. That could be particularly important if Google and FCA intend to launch the autonomous minivans as a competitor to traditional public transportation options. Chris Urmson, the director of Google's self-driving car project, indicated that may be a potential business model during a public meeting on autonomous operations last week. "Public transit executives could be buying autonomous minivans rather than expensive buses," he said. "Federal standards determine what kinds of vehicles cities can use for transit. This needs attention." In the Pacifica, Google's engineers get an all-new minivan. Chrysler showcased the vehicle for the first time in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and sales of the non-hybrid versions of the vans went on sale last month. FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne says further collaboration between his company and Google is possible. "This first phase of the operation is very targeted. It's designed to take Google technology into the minivan. It's very, very focused," he said, according to Automotive News. The collaboration won't be Google's first experience with hybrids. The Lexus RX 450h SUV is one of the two cars in its current test fleet, which consists of approximately 70 vehicles. With roughly 100 autonomous minivans slated to be part of the collaboration, Google's test fleet will more than double.

Hot sales have Detroit automakers shortening summer shutdowns

Tue, 08 Jul 2014

Back in May, there was speculation that the Detroit Three automakers would maintain or perhaps even extend their traditional summer shutdowns, mostly due to a bitingly cold winter that saw below-freezing temperatures infiltrate the southernmost reaches of the US, putting a chill on auto sales. Now, though, the numbers are in, and thanks to some promising sales figures, it looks like some domestic line workers are going to be working clear through July, in some cases.
According to Automotive News, Ford has slashed its traditional two-week hiatus for factory workers in half at four of its plants, while both Chrysler and General Motors will keep factories running nonstop (two plants in Chrysler's case and a third of GM's factories).
This is, as we said, thanks to some positive numbers. Chief among those is the Seasonal Adjusted Annual Rate, which was at an eight-year high of 17 million units. Individual figures were less promising. GM, embroiled in its recall scandal, still saw a one-percent increase while Ford dropped six percent in year-over-year sales. Chrysler was the big winner, though, with a nine-percent jump in June.
