Specifically, there's a ding to the driver's rear corner, a ding in the rear bumper on the passenger side and the driver's seat leather has cracked and has a small tear on the door side (see pictures below). The ABS and brake lights are on on the dash display. A mechanic told me there is an ABS module that is known to go out on these vehicles. We were quoted around $1,300 to fix it, but opted not to because that's an expensive repair for a vehicle this age, and it doesn't affect the operation of the brakes/vehicle.But: this is a one owner vehicle and I have a large stack of maintenance and repair receipts."

Not long after I moved to the United States from Ireland I bought a 1986 VW GTI from a dealership in Northern Virginia. They totally misrepresented the condition of the car and after buying it I figured out they had clearly tampered with the odometer; it also needed some costly repairs within weeks of my driving it off the lot. After my bad experience buying a used car I made a note to myself never to do that to someone else. I've bought and sold several used cars since and I've always represented them honestly, which is exactly what I will do with this Suburban.

This is a one owner vehicle. My wife and I bought it brand new from Carstens Chevrolet in Breckenridge, Texas. There's a picture of the original window sticker provided (new cost was $40,367). I'm not someone who feels the need to drive a different car every two years, I tend to hang onto my vehicles for a long time and take care of them so they take care of me. We are selling our 2001 Suburban after 12 years of loyal service because we've replaced it with a 2011 Suburban LTZ that has a lot more bells and whistles.

I have a large stack of repair and maintenance documentation, though most of it is maintenance rather than repair. Oil was changed regularly every 3,000 miles or so. The spark plugs and ignition cables were replaced (by me) around 120,000 miles. The oil pan gasket and rear main seal were replaced by Nevco in Houston in February 2013 at a cost of $991, so there's a major repair the next owner will not have to worry about. Any potential buyer is welcome to inspect the engine bay and the underside - there are no leaks.

There's three rows of seating; with the exception of the driver's seat (see below) the seats are in good shape. The a/c blows strong and nice and cold. I can honestly say that a significant amount of the miles on this Suburban are highway miles: my in-laws lives in Breckenridge, TX (near Abilene) which is 340 miles one-way from Houston. We go there fairly regularly to visit. I have used a K&N air filter since the vehicle was new because they are far better than the disposable paper filters. This is a 4 wheel drive vehicle. I have both keys and keyless remotes.

The ABS and brake lights are lit on the dash display (see picture). A mechanic told me there is an ABS module that is known to go out on this generation of Suburbans. I was quoted around $1,300 to replace it, but I chose not to because that is a costly repair for a vehicle this age, particularly because there's no effect on the way the Suburban drives or brakes.

This is a 12-year old vehicle, so if you are looking for a 2001 Suburban that is cosmetically perfect, this is probably not the one for you. It has a few minor hickeys, specifically: (a) a ding on the driver's side rear; (b) a ding in the rear bumper on the passenger side (wife backed into a pole outside the vet's); (c) some cracking and a small tear in the door side of the driver's seat; (d) a bald spot in the carpet in the trunk (forgot to put the lid on a bottle of cleaning fluid on the way to the recycling center); and (e) the plastic around the driver's door handle is cracked but the lock works fine (vehicle break-in visiting Seaworld). To me at least none of these are significant flaws; I think for its age this Suburban actually looks really good. It has never been in an accident.

We live in Houston inside the 610 Loop. I'll stick a FOR SALE sign on it while it is parked outside my house, so I reserve the right to end the auction early if I sell it locally. Winning bidder must pay a $250 deposit via Paypal within 24 hours of the end of the auction. This vehicle is being sold AS-IS.

Kelley Blue Book values for this year, make, model, mileage, equipment, etcetera are: $4,097 in fair condition, $4,672 in good condition, $4,772 in very good condition and $5,047 in excellent condition. KBB defines fair condition as: 18% of all cars we value meet this criteria. This car has some mechanical or cosmetic defects and needs servicing, but is still in safe running condition and has a clean title history. The paint, body and/or interior may need professional servicing. The tires may need replacing and there may be some repairable rust damage. KBB defines good condition as: "54% of all cars we value meet this criteria. This car is free of major mechanical problems but may need some reconditioning. Its paint and bodywork may require minor touch-ups, with repairable cosmetic defects, and its engine compartment may have minor leaks. There are minor body scratches or dings and minor interior blemishes, but no rust. The tires match and have 50% or more of tread. It also has a clean title history, with some service records available, and will pass safety and smog inspection."

I think what sets my Suburban apart is that it is a one-owner vehicle that comes with a lot of maintenance documentation. In my opinion when you are buying an older vehicle the mechanical upkeep is a lot more important than minor cosmetic issues. If you have any questions please contact me. For reasons that should be obvious, I will not accept a personal check from the winning bidder. If you want to pay by cashier's check, I may ask you to come to my bank with me to make sure the check is valid before completing the sale, and I will probably want a copy of your I.D. (no offense). I have the title (it's a clear title) and there is no lien.

Why does the Corvette Stingray have so many vents? Here's why

Sun, 27 Jan 2013

Just looking at the new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, it's not hard to see that the car's design was created with aerodynamics at the forefront, but Chevrolet designers point out exactly what went into designing the iconic coupe in a pair of recently released videos. The videos show the Corvette going through early design phases, including clay models and wind tunnel tests, as well as talking to the car's chief engineer, Tadge Juechter.
Both videos help explain various aspects of the C7 Corvette, but it's the aero tuning of the car that is most interesting. This includes extra attention paid to the lower air dam and vented hood to help reduce drag and lift, while the rear quarter inlets are for differential and transmission cooling. Juechter said that some of these aero-tuned elements were inspired from GM's involvement in racing.
If you have about five minutes and you can't get enough information about the new 'Vette, then check out the videos posted below.

2015 Chevy Silverado gets Custom Sport package

Wed, Jan 7 2015

It's been on our mind for a couple of years that the Chevrolet Silverado could really use "a sophisticated monochromatic look." It is, at long last, a reality. Harking back to the Custom Sport Trucks the company produced in the 1960s, the 2015 Custom Sport package can be had in black or white on LT and LTZ models for those in search of "a touch of elegance." That means body-colored front and rear bumpers and grille surround, a black grille, and chrome applied to the door handles, mirror caps, side moldings and 20-inch wheels. The package, which will cost between $1,950 an $2,950, also throws in projector beam headlamps, tow hooks, and heated mirrors. LT trims can be had in black or white, LTZ trims - including Z71 - offer the choice of black or White Diamond Tricoat. The press release below has more information. Don't everybody rush to the dealer at once. 2015 SILVERADO OFFERS CUSTOM SPORT PACKAGE Inspired by Chevy Custom Sport Trucks that helped launch personal-use pickups DETROIT, 07/01/15 – With the new 2015 Silverado Custom Sport special edition, Chevrolet pays homage to one of its most iconic pickups, adding a sophisticated monochromatic look to double- and crew-cab Silverados. The Custom Sport package features body-colored front and rear bumpers and a body-colored grille surround with a chrome-accented black grille. Other accents include 20-inch chrome wheels, chrome door handles and mirror caps, and chrome body-side moldings. The package also includes projector beam headlamps, tow hooks and heated power-adjusted mirrors. "The Custom Sport special edition was inspired by Chevy Custom Sport Trucks of the late 1960s," said Sandor Piszar, Chevrolet Trucks marketing director. "Those CST models added a touch of elegance to a great all-around truck, just like the Custom Sport package for the new Silverado." The redesigned 1967 Chevrolet pickup entered the market at a time when trucks were starting to move off the jobsites and into the driveways of cities and suburbs. The 1967 Custom Sport Truck, with its bright trim, plush carpet and bucket seats, helped launch a wave of personal use pickups that continues today. For the 2015 Silverado, the Custom Sport package will be available as LT and LTZ models, including Z71s. LT models will be available in black or white, while LTZs will come in black or White Diamond Tricoat. Package prices will vary from $1,950 to $2,950, depending on the model. Dealers can place orders starting this month.

Weekly Recap: Lincoln Continental serves up the style, Cadillac CT6 delivers the substance in New York

Sat, Apr 4 2015

Lincoln and Cadillac grabbed the spotlight this week at the New York Auto Show in a dramatic fashion that evoked the brands' glory days. America's two luxury carmakers went toe-to-toe with their glittering reveals and plans for ambitious expansion. Both were selling their technology, style and the promise of a better future. Cadillac vs. Lincoln. At the Javits Center, 2015 seemed a lot like 1956. Neither company was interested in drawing comparisons with the other, which is fair, and accurate. They're in vastly different places in terms of sales and the pace of their turnarounds, but they hope to reach the same eventual destination at the pinnacle of the luxury-car world. Lincoln used the element of surprise to great effect with the Continental concept. A production version is still at least a year away, and the company was vague on details. Officially, we don't even know if it is front- or rear-wheel drive, though speculation abounds. Who cares? The seats can be adjusted 30 ways! The Continental also showed off a bold chrome grille that will be the new face of Lincoln. The blue bomber also rolled on blinged-out 21-inch polished aluminum wheels, used a 3.0-liter EcoBoost engine and had huge LED head lights with "laser-assisted" high beams. All of this resulted in almost blinding attention. The concept drew rave reviews, stirred controversy with Bentley designers who argued Lincoln ripped them off, and most importantly, pointed a way forward for the newly determined brand that hopes to compete with Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Cadillac and Lexus. View 32 Photos Meanwhile, Cadillac showed the CT6, a finished product that will top its range and is loaded with the best and latest technologies General Motors has at its disposal. With production starting late this year, Cadillac had more specifics at the ready. Engines? Cadillac has a couple V6s and a turbo four for sure. It's working on a hybrid, and has considered a V-Series variant. It's based on a new rear-wheel-drive, aluminum-intensive chassis called Omega, features an advanced collision-mitigation system with automatic braking and has a cabin that's laden with "leathers, exotic woods and carbon fiber." It will be assembled at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck factory and goes on sale next year. At this point, Cadillac is more than willing to talk about every except for the price. The devil was not in the details for Cadillac, as evidenced by the CT6. But it wasn't for Lincoln either.
