Chevrolet Debuts Two-Tone Paint Design on SSR Pace Vehicle
New Scheme to be Introduced on Pace and Parade Lap Vehicles During the Allstate
400 at the Brickyard
INDIANAPOLIS – Chevrolet has paced every NASCAR race at the Indianapolis Motor
Speedway since the first Brickyard 400 in 1994. This year for the first time,
the honor falls upon the Chevrolet SSR to represent the brand at the Allstate
400 at the Brickyard on Aug. 7. Just as the full-fender forms of the SSR recall
the later ‘40s and early ‘50s, the new for 2006 two-tone paint option and
bright chrome accents of the thoroughly modern roadster will remind enthusiasts
of the ‘60s.
This will be the first time that a Chevy SSR has been on pace vehicle duty at
Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a NASCAR race. In addition to the pace vehicle,
a collection of 45 two-tone and bright chrome 2006 Chevy SSRs will be used to
parade the field of NASCAR Nextel Cup Series drivers around the track during
driver introductions on race day.
“The two-tone paint along with pacing the race is a bold way for Chevrolet to
introduce a new look for the Chevy SSR” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general
manager. “We’re pleased to add another chapter to Chevrolet’s illustrious
history at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.”
The Chevy SSR pace vehicle design features five Hot Hues™ colors from DuPont
starting with a wide stripe of True Blue that begins above the grill and
extends across the top of the vehicle to the deck lid with Molten Orange
adorning the lower sides of each vehicle. The GM design team chose between 10
DuPont Hot Hues shades before deciding on the current paint scheme which also
incorporates the colors of Cosmic Dust, Bombay Blue and Tango. Initially two
different two-tone paint schemes will be available as an option on the 2006
Chevy SSR and will arrive at Chevy dealerships late this summer. Additional
combinations of SSR colors will be rolled out throughout the 2006 model year.
The Chevy SSR that will pace the field continues to be nearly identical to the
2006 model available in dealer showrooms. In addition to the two-tone paint
scheme, the 2006 Chevy SSR will feature a 6.0 Liter LS2 V-8 that delivers 395
horsepower, a four-speed automatic transmission, 19-inch HRE 647R wheels with
polished rim and brushed aluminum spokes in the front and matching 20-inch
wheels in the back. A six-speed manual transmission is optional and with it,
SSR’s horsepower increases to 400.
During Chevrolet’s history of pace duties at the track, a Monte Carlo (1994,
1997-2004), a C-1500 Full-Size Pickup (1995) and a Camaro (1996) have paced the
Brickyard race.
As the Official Vehicle of NASCAR, Chevrolet will perform pace duties for 60
NASCAR events in 2005 including 28 NASCAR Nextel Cup, 17 Busch Series and 15
Craftsman Truck Series races, featuring such vehicles as the Corvette, Monte Carlo and Silverado,
in addition to SSR.
The 45 two-tone SSRs, which have sequential serial numbers, will be used to
parade the NASCAR drivers around the track during the pre-race driver
introductions are the first 2006 models to be produced with the new paint
option and bright chrome trim. After leaving the Speedway, all 45 will be available for
purchase at Chevy dealerships in the North Central region following the race
weekend.
“Thanks to the relationship Chevrolet has with Indianapolis Motor Speedway, we
are able to use the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard as the perfect venue to debut
the two-tone Chevy SSR and market Chevy’s full line of cars and trucks,” said
Peper. “What a great way to provide race fans with the opportunity to purchase
our heritage-styled, performance roadster that includes a piece of racing
history.”

The students spent three years transforming an ordinary Chevy Malibu into a revolutionary vehicle. Not far from the building where General Motors once invented the Chevy Volt, a dozen or so college students are standing on the blacktop alongside a test track, watching a professional driver push the limits of a plug-in hybrid car they've built that's far more radical. These students, from Colorado State University, have spent the past three years transforming an ordinary Chevy Malibu into a revolutionary vehicle. At first glance, it still looks like a regular sedan. But under the hood, they've installed a hybrid powertrain that contains both hydrogen and electric power sources. Even by the standards of the Department of Energy competition they're participating in, it's an outlier. That's exactly what they had in mind. "We didn't want to come here and tell them how to build a better Volt," said Tom Bradley, faculty adviser for the Colorado State team. "They already know how to do that. We can tell them how to think about these possibilities in a whole new way." After three years of work, it all comes down to this. The Colorado State team was one of 15 that came to GM's Milford Proving Grounds last week for the final stretch of the EcoCar2 competition, which challenges regular college students who have no automotive experience to do nothing less than reinvent the American car. The teams have come from across North America, and include schools like Ohio State and Virginia Tech that have a long history of participating in similar competitions, and schools like the University of Washington and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University that are here for the first time. After three years of work, it all comes down to this. The teams have operated 24 hours a day for almost two weeks here at the Proving Grounds, running a gamut of tests that include a 310-point safety inspection, emissions and energy-consumption tests and road tests, in which professional GM drivers ensure they're road worthy. The winning team will be announced tonight in Washington D.C. Revolutionary cars, ordinary package While other green-car competitions encourage extreme designs, this one comes with a somewhat constraining twist: Yes, students must improve fuel economy and reduce emissions, but in the end, they still have to have a car that would appeal to mainstream customers. In practical terms, that means they must keep conveniences like air conditioning and trunk space.

A sudden storm front whipped up enough wind to send some hot air balloons flying into the air in Wisconsin over the weekend. One ballon proved so energetic that it was able to drag a fullsize SUV across a field and into a stand of tents. The freak accident occurred at Balloonfest in Waterford, Wisconsin. Spectators were horrified as balloons dragged handlers to the ground and launched with terrified pilots clinging to their baskets. Organizers had started packing up the colorful balloons due to ominous storm clouds when the wind kicked up. "Happened just like that; it was crazy," Nathan Fricke, crew member, told Fox 6. Winds were clocked at 40 to 50 miles per hour. A balloon caught in the wind dragged a large SUV (we think a Suburban or Yukon XL) hundreds of feet and into a cluster of tents on the edge of the staging area where balloons were on display for festival goers. Considering that the SUV surely weighs well over 5,000 pounds, it's lucky that no one was injured in the incident. News Source: Fox6Now Weird Car News Chevrolet GM GMC SUV

General Motors was predicting a strong showing for the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon before they debuted, and demand among dealers for the midsize trucks even exceeded company's expectations. The positive situation has left GM with a problem, though: finding ways to increase capacity for the pickups at the Wentzville Assembly plant in Missiouri. With a third shift already running, GM has continued to look for ways to build just a few more of the trucks at the plant. The company has plans to hire as many as 1,000 more workers for the Saturday and Sunday shifts to construct an additional 2,000 pickups a month, according to unnamed insiders at the factory speaking to Automotive News. The little adjustments even extend to getting rid of an unpaid break to add 18 minute of assembly time over the course of a day, which equals about 3,500 more vehicles a year. All of this effort comes because the trucks are in such high demand. According to GM's figures, the company has delivered a combined 35,720 units of the Colorado and Canyon from January through April 2015, and the Chevy was the fastest-selling truck in the US for the previous three months. In May, it spent an average of just 12 days in showrooms before being snapped up. And even better for the company, 43 percent of these buyers came from other brands. According to Automotive News, the most popular trade-ins have included the Ford F-150, Toyota Tacoma, and Dodge Dakota. Related Video:
