If you are in the market for a good work/pleasure truck you my consider looking into 2011 or newer, because there are some major changes applied to this year, that are not available in 2010 and older, including engine, transmission, suspension, stability, frame, brakes, comfort etc.

Smart transmission (smart computer, shifting):
Vehicle has a shift stabilization feature that adjust the transmission shifting to the current driving conditions. The transmission uses adaptive shift controls. Adaptive shift controls continually
compares key shift parameters to pre-programmed ideal shifts stored in the transmission computer. The transmission constantly makes adjustments to improve vehicle performance according to how the vehicle is being used.

Transmission manual mode with range selection mode:
It lets driver select the range of gears appropriate for current driving conditions. Selecting gears 1 - 3, helps reducing and maintaining vehicle speed without using brakes on: hilly, winding
roads (gear 3), steep mountain roads (gear 2), major/severe downgrades and off-road driving, deep snow or mud (gear 1).

Low traction mode:
Assists in vehicle acceleration when road conditions are slippery, such as with ice or snow.

Tow/haul mode:
The tow/haul adjusts the transmission shift pattern to reduce shift cycling, providing increased performance, vehicle control, and transmission cooling when towing or hauling heavy loads.

Cruise grade braking:
Cruise grade braking assists when driving on a downhill grade. It maintains vehicle speed by automatically implementing a shift schedule that uses the engine and the transmission to slow the
vehicle.

Four-wheel drive with locking differential:
Shifts between two-wheel drive high and four-wheel drive high can be made at any vehicle speed. Very useful when you are driving on the highway in the winter in two-wheel drive and suspect ice on some bridges. For some other trucks you are required to slow down or stop to be able to shift in to four-wheel drive. Hitting brakes to slow down can be very dangerous or fatal on ice.
Four-wheel drive high, use when extra traction is needed, such as snowy or icy roads or in most of-road situations. This setting also engages the front axle to help drive the vehicle. This is the best setting to use when plowing snow.
Four-wheel drive low, this setting also engages front axle and delivers extra torque. You may never need this setting. It sends maximum power to all four wheels. You might choose this setting
while driving off-road in deep snow, and while climbing or descending steep hills.
Locking differential automatically locks both wheels on the axle so if one slips other one still engages.

Shifting case neutral position: Allows your vehicle to be towed without any damage to the transmission, and without the need of lifting wheels, unlike most other automatic four-wheel, all-wheel, and two-wheel drive vehicles. This truck can be towed behind RV with all wheels on the ground, or with the tow-dolly, with front or rear wheels off the ground.

Quote: "The big changes for the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD happen under the skin. The new fully boxed frame is much beefier than last year, increasing capability and aiding road manners.
The new frame is five times stiffer torsionally than the outgoing frame. The new independent suspension and leaf-spring rear suspension are larger and stronger, increasing the front axle rating to 6,000 pounds, which means a snow plow can be used on all 2011 iterations. It has also had a positive effect on towing and hauling capability.
The stronger frame also improves durability and allows for finer and more comfortable suspension tuning. In addition, GM has used a hydraulic body mount for the rear of the cab. As a result, the 2011 Silverado HD rides much better, without as many of the up-and-down motions commonly associated with pickup trucks.
Steering, handling and braking are improved as well. The new steering is more direct, with less play on center, and the stiffer structure allows the Silverado HD to react quicker to steering inputs. The brakes are much more substantial with larger rotors and calipers, giving them less pedal travel and a firmer, more confident feel. If you've driven a Silverado HD or half-ton recently, you won't recognize the steering and braking of the new HD. It's much better..."

Comparing towing capabilities:

GCWR - Gross Combination Weight Ratio, is the total allowable weight of the completely loaded vehicle and trailer including any passengers, cargo, equipment, and conversions.
GVWR - The gross vehicle weight rating, or gross vehicle mass (GVM) is the maximum operating weight/mass of a vehicle as specified by the manufacturer including the vehicle's chassis, body, engine, engine fluids, fuel, accessories, driver, passengers and cargo but excluding that of any trailers.go but excluding that of any trailers.

Next-gen GMC Sierra spied with diesel power

Tue, Sep 5 2017

The next generation of GM trucks is arriving soon, and we're expecting a huge leap forward over the current lineup. The Chevy Silverado and the GMC SIerra sell extremely well, but haven't done much to move the segment forward in a long time. The Ford F-150 has an all-aluminum body and turbocharged V6 power. The Ram 1500 gained a diesel and coil spring suspension. These spy shots show that diesel may be in the cards for GM. Some quick shots and copious use of flash show what is most likely a tank for diesel exhaust fluid and a diesel particulate filter, both necessary equipment for any modern diesel. It's unclear what form factor that engine will come in, though GM has a number of engines to choose from, including the 2.8-liter inline four that's found in the Colorado and Canyon, though that may be a little light duty for the Silverado and Sierra. Other rumors surrounding the trucks suggest a move to an aluminum cab while retaining a steel bed. That seems like a reasonable move for GM, even if the company was attempting to shame Ford for its move to aluminum a few years ago. Look for more news as early as the Detroit Auto Show in January. Chevy SS prototype spotted wearing Pontiac G8 clothes

Tue, 28 Aug 2012

Do not adjust your computer screen, you are not seeing the rebirth of the Pontiac brand. General Motors has chosen to use a G8 to disguise a test mule for the latest prototype of the forthcoming Chevrolet SS. The G8 was closely related to the Holden Commodore and Vauxhall VXR, the platform upon which the new Chevrolet performance model will be based. It should come as little surprise, then, that GM has opted to use the cladding from the former G8.
Thought the front clip of this mule is pure Pontiac, note the vents immediately behind the front wheel. That is a distinctive design hallmark of the Vauxhall VXR. Also note that this vehicle is right-hand drive, as the Holden and its Chevy counterpart will be very closely related. That likely includes potential drivetrains. The spy photos of this mule also reveal very wide rear tires, and rear wheels that do not match the fronts.

Chevy monitors drivers' biometrics while experiencing new Corvette Stingray

Fri, 25 Oct 2013

We tell you about what a car is like to drive every day, remarking on throttle response, steering weight and feedback, squat, dive, brake fade and a dozen or more other factors of performance. What we can't tell you, though, is what the car does to us - how its performance impacts us, physically. That's what makes this video series from Chevrolet so darn cool.
The Bow-Tie brand rented out Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch, got several (very) different individuals together, strapped a bunch of sensors to their bodies to record biometric data ranging from heart rate to respiration to brain activity, and then handed them keys to the new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. The results are explained in a series of videos, devoted to each driver, showing how different people react to the Corvette's performance.
If, like your author, you're a nerd for medical science, this is going to be a fascinating set of videos. If not, it's still pretty cool to see how the body of someone with racing experience, like Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi, reacts to tracking a car like the Corvette Stingray compared to the owner of legendary Detroit barbecue joint, Slows BBQ. Take a look below for all six videos from the series, or hop over to the Corvette Vimeo channel for the interactive experience, where you can see all the different metrics.
