There. We just did. Excuse our French, but the GMC Topkick/Chevy Kodiak pickup by Monroe Truck Equipment is the first real work truck in this industry rag that deserves some enthusiast hyperbole. Build a solid work truck Bill Bolin of Rancho Motors in Victorville, Calif. says four of the nine customers who bought the Monroe conversion last year traded in one-ton duallies. The new toy haulers and horse trailers are heavy, especially those with living quarters. The one tons, while having comparable engine sizes and transmissions as the 4500, don’t have the braking system or the gear ratio to handle the real heavy hauling. Phil Murphy will tell you. Murphy owns an excavation and paving company in Phoenix, Ariz. His smaller 1/2- and one-ton trucks were not doing the job. "In both of them I replaced the rear end, bent and cracked the frames, and went through the brakes, clutch and transmission," he says. "I realized it’s not the truck, it’s what I’m pulling and hauling." Murphy bought himself a 4500 pickup by Monroe and gave it a workout. "I’ve put 9,000 lbs. in the bed while hooked up to a trailer with a forklift on it at 20,000 lbs. and went from Phoenix to Flagstaff," Murphy says. "The truck never broke sweat. I was going up hills at 55 mph." GM added more brawn to the ‘06 models. Four-wheel-drive is now an option, expanding the work possibilities to more rugged environments such as forestry, snowplowing, landscaping, agriculture, tree trimming and utility work. All new 4x4 C4500 and C5500 models feature an 8,000-lb. front axle rating as standard equipment, an additional 1,000 lbs. better than the base axle of the previous year. The ‘06 4x4s also offer an exhaust brake option, which helps the vehicle decelerate without using the service brakes. That’s a huge lifesavings in brake pads and important in preventing overheating during long mountain descents. Add the wow factor The mad scientists at Monroe created the signature eight-foot steel bed with bed panel lines that seamlessly match the contours of the Kodiak/TopKick body. MTE designed a unique subframe for mounting the pickup box to the truck frame, which accommodates a gooseneck or fifth-wheel hitch without extra drilling. In fact, one can be swapped out for the other without invasive surgery. Hitching is easier with the Hitchcam rear-view camera option, mounted directly above the rear receiver, and in-cab flat-screen monitor. The familiar GM 3500 Series interior gets a makeover with brushed aluminum or woodgrain dash trim. The Ultra Seating Package includes leather seats with air suspension and a fold-flat rear seat for the crew cab. See the spec sidebar for more option goodies.
An S10? That may be an overstatement, but the truck’s sloped-hood design and large windshield gives drivers the ability to see objects on the ground as close as 13.8 feet from the front bumper. That’s even better than the forward visibility measurements of many compact pickup trucks. The 53-degree wheel-cut on the 4x2 results in a turning diameter as tight as 38.4 feet — better than a crew-cab dually pickup. Yet at 95 inches tall and proud, you’re staring down any mega pickup or a 79-inch Hummer H2 at a stoplight. |

12 new cars that will never go out of style
Tue, Nov 23 2021Some cars never go out of style. It’s rare, but it happens. They get old. They get depreciated. But they never stop looking cool. Some might call them modern or instant classics. Within a few years theyÂ’re no longer the latest and greatest, no longer the flavor of the month, but they remain special. Eternally special. Timeless. These cars arenÂ’t necessarily going to be worth a fortune someday. However, some may not depreciate as rapidly or as far as other models. But thatÂ’s not what weÂ’re talking about here. These are the cars that enthusiasts will always find desirable from the curbside. TheyÂ’re the cars you end up shopping on eBay late at night 10 years later because you canÂ’t get them out of your head. TheyÂ’re the cars that will forever excite you when you spot a clean one in traffic or in a parking lot. There are plenty of recent examples over the past couple of decades that could count as instant design classics. But then we got to thinking, what 2021 models will be forever cool to stare at? Which new cars and trucks on sale today will we be shopping on eBay late at night in the 2030s? We kept supercars and other ultra-expensive cars off the list to keep things within the realm of attainability, and ended up with 12 total cars. Lexus LC WeÂ’re not applying a numerical ranking to any of the cars on this list, but if we were, the Lexus LC would be No. 1. There isnÂ’t another car design out there that can stir our emotions the way an LC can when itÂ’s just standing still. This car is a concept design come true in the most beautiful of ways, and itÂ’s a shoo-in winner for Concours events decades into the future. All of this heaping praise, and we havenÂ’t even gotten to the LC 500Â’s intoxicating 5.0-liter V8. It doesnÂ’t win drag races. It wonÂ’t be the fastest around the track against any similarly-priced competition. But none of that matters. ItÂ’s quite possibly the best car you can buy new, and that says it all when it comes to the LC. Chevrolet Corvette It might not be the stunner that the Lexus LC is, but the new C8 Corvette is and will always be a special vehicle. ItÂ’s the first mid-engine Corvette, which instantly cements it into an automotive hall of fame section of sorts. All of the performance stats and specs are there to back up its supercar-like looks, and it remains the best performance bargain on sale today.
GM is the latest automaker accused of diesel emissions cheating
Thu, May 25 2017Volkswagen and Ram need to make room on the diesel-emissions bench for General Motors. America's largest automaker was accused in a lawsuit on Thursday of rigging hundreds of thousands of diesel trucks with at least three so-called defeat devices to ensure that the trucks would meet federal and state emission standards, even if they generated more pollution in real-world driving. According to the complaint, on-road emissions testing conducted for the plaintiffs found that Duramax-equipped trucks produced NOx pollutants, comprised of nitrogen and oxygen atoms, two to five times higher than legally permitted, and "many times" higher than their gasoline counterparts. The proposed class-action lawsuit was filed in federal court in Detroit on behalf of people who own or lease more than 705,000 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks fitted with "Duramax" engines from 2011 to 2016 model years. The lawsuit seeks remedies including possible refunds or restitution for lost vehicle value, plus punitive damages. It adds to legal problems for Detroit-based GM, which has already paid about $2.5 billion in penalties and settlements over faulty ignition switches linked to 124 deaths. GM joins at least five automakers whose diesel emissions have been scrutinized by regulators or consumers. They include VW, which has admitted to cheating; Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler; Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Peugeot and Renault. GM spokesman Dan Flores called the claims "baseless," and said the trucks comply with US Environmental Protection Agency emissions standards and California's own tough standards. Shares of GM were down 69 cents, or 2.1 percent, at $32.50 in afternoon trading, after earlier falling to $31.93. The GM lawsuit was filed by several law firms, including Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro, which helped reach multibillion-dollar settlements with VW on behalf of drivers and dealers. The case is Fenner et al v General Motors LLC et al, US District Court, Eastern District of Michigan, No. 17-11661. The named plaintiffs are Andrei Fenner of Mountain View, California and Joshua Herman of Sulphur, Louisiana. They said they would not have bought their respective 2011 Sierra and 2016 Silverado trucks, or would have paid less for them, had they known about the alleged rigging. Joseph Spak, an RBC Capital Markets analyst, in a research report said "negative publicity" from the lawsuit could drive buyers to trucks from Ford or even Fiat Chrysler's Ram.
MotorWeek looks back at 1995 Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon
Sat, Jun 20 2015MotorWeek's Retro Review series gives us a nostalgic look back at some of the best sports cars and luxury sedans available in the 1980s and '90s. For its latest clip, the show shifts gears to remember the 1995 Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon. Similar to the success of crossovers today, SUVs were tallying big sales and making big money for automakers in the mid-'90s. The Tahoe and Yukon filled slots in the market as steps down from the larger Suburban. These twins weren't wanting for space, though, with plenty of room to haul around a family. MotorWeek came away generally impressed too, and called the models some "of the better riding sport utilities we've ever experienced." This review comes with some jazzy, electric guitar licks to enjoy in the background.
