For auction is a 1966 Chevrolet C20 longbed pickup truck. The truck is 3/4 ton with a 292 straight 6 engine, 4-on-the-floor. Runs and drives, was a daily driver. It will get the job done, but it won't win any beauty contests while doing so.

The guts:

The truck has never given me any problems with starting or running. The engine is strong, but gives a little miss if you quickly punch it to the floor. Here is a quick video of me starting her up, and giving it that little punch. It's never been a problem while driving, I suspect it's a timing thing. The truck leaks a lot of oil, it will need gaskets all around if you value your driveway. It has a new alternator, new starter, has had the same battery in it since at least 2009 when I bought it, needs new battery cables and there is some crummy stuff around the top of the radiator sometimes. Other than that, I'm not really sure about the rest, as I'm not terribly mechanically inclined. The back brakes have been totally replaced, but the front ones need to be done. I haven't looked, but judging by the condition of the back brakes when I did them, a whole overhaul should be done on the front.

The exterior:

Rust-Oleum flat black. The exterior is in need of restoration, as there are numerous dents and small rust holes (and one possible puncture hole?) throughout the bed and body. There are rust bubbles in what the truck guys call the "usual areas," for these old trucks, meaning the lower fenders, corners of the doors. The holes for the chrome (which is missing) are filled in on the passenger side. The wood and rails in the bed are totally shot. The previous owner cut out plywood to lay down in the bed, so it is useable for truck stuff. I bought a new windshield and gasket in 2009 when I bought it the truck, and it is still in perfect condition. The rear window is probably original and pretty scratched, the side windows and wind wings are not cracked. The rear tires were purchased in 2011 and the front tires were purchased a few months later.

The interior:

There is The floor liner is torn on the driver's side, and the bench seat is torn on the driver's side, however the seat back is intact. The inside of the cab has been sprayed Rust-Oleum satin black, with a blue-green for the accents. There is no radio, there is a heater. New dome light, new turn signal assembly.

The story:

In 2009 we needed a reliable, large truck for making trips to the home improvement store while we renovated our house. We hauled everything from pallets of tiles and bricks, to lumber, to stacks of drywall 20 sheets high in the back of this truck and she never batted an eye. The truck was my daily driver up until May 2013. Now that we're done working on the house, and I have secured a cushy job that allows me to work from home, we have no need for a heavy duty pickup, and would like to move to something smaller (while we're at it, you know anybody selling a 67-72 Blazer?).

Question of the Day: What's the most irritating car name?

Wed, Mar 9 2016

You hear a lot about how the Chevrolet Nova was a sales flop in Mexico because "No va" means "it doesn't go" in Spanish; in fact, the Nova sold pretty well south of the border, and in any case most Spanish-speakers know that "Nova" means "new" in Latin and Portuguese. However, General Motors doesn't deserve to be let off the hook for bad car names, because the Oldsmobile Achieva— no doubt inspired by the excruciating "coffee achievers" ads of the 1980s— scrapes the biggest fingernails down the screechiest chalkboard in the US-market car-name world. That is, unless you think Daihatsu's incomprehensible choice of Charade was worse. Meanwhile, Japanese car buyers could get machines with cool names like Mazda Bongo Friendee or Honda Life Dunk. It's just not fair! So, what car name drives you the craziest? Related Video: Auto News Design/Style Chevrolet Honda Mazda Daihatsu Automotive History questions car names

Looking back on our favorite cars of Mad Men

Tue, Apr 7 2015

The second half of the seventh and final season of Mad Men debuted this week, set to cap a run of public and critical acclaim. A decade's worth of interesting cars also made for good television, if you were paying attention. Vehicles didn't often steal the spotlight from Don, Betty, Roger, Joan and the gang, but they added meaningfully to the tone and beauty of the series. We sorted through the wheeled extras from Mad Men's archives, and choose some of our favorites to highlight. The list consists of cars that had at least a small impact on the plot of an episode, though certainly there are worthy gems hiding in just about every street and driving scene. Check out our subjective top five, and then let us know which of the Mad Men cars would be on your list. 1962 Cadillac Coupe DeVille – Season 2 Don Draper's Cadillac Coupe DeVille, all 500 feet of it, shows up in a few seasons of the show, but it's the first appearance that sets the tone. A Cadillac salesman, cut from the same cloth as Draper, asks what Don drives right now. "A Dodge," Don admits. "Those are wonderful if you want to get somewhere," allows the salesman, "this is for when you've already arrived." For a man on the move up corporate and social ladders that's a powerful message, and a pitch-perfect car. 1961 Lincoln Continental – Season 3 The most stylish Lincoln Continental ever is perfect set dressing for the mod show, of course. Though it's interesting that the car isn't cast as dapper Draper's ride, but rather his father-in-law's. Grandpa Gene does what all great grandfathers are bound to: lets his granddaughter Sally drive the big Lincoln while he works the pedals. Generational bond secured, in fine fashion. When you go back through the first three seasons of the show, you'll notice that Continentals show up more than once, too. There's nothing quite like them to evoke the best of the early '60s. 1963 John Deere 110 – Season 3 The only non-standard passenger vehicle on the list, no self-respecting gearhead/Mad Men fan should quibble with the inclusion of the John Deere 110 riding mower. For starters, the Deere is lovely to look at; a miniature version of the American Heartland icon in its green and yellow duds. The 110 appears as if milled from a solid block of steel, just the opposite of today's sleek, plasticky lawn minders (we're scouring Craigslist for one to bring home). The John Deere also has dear ramifications to the plot, too.

Next Chevy Volt will be 2016 model and ride on new chassis

Fri, Mar 7 2014

What do we know about the 2016 Chevy Volt? Well, for now, all we can do is try to put the puzzle together without the box. Thankfully, a new batch of pieces has arrived from a new report in Edmunds, which says that the 2016 model year will introduce the second generation of a car that hasn't been dramatically updated since it went on sale in 2010. The new Volt is getting an "evolutionary styling change" and will ride on a new front-drive platform that has been developed by General Motors. GM's Kevin Kelly told AutoblogGreen that he has "no comment on future products," but he did acknowledge that Chevrolet is working on a second-generation Volt, "but I can't say anything about timing." Everybody already knew that a next-gen Volt is coming, so that's not a surprise. What we don't know is any real concrete information on the car itself. The few tidbits of information we do have help define the outlines of the next version of Chevy's halo car, but they're not confirmed yet. For the record, they range from the eye-raising (a $10,000 price drop) to the logical (20 percent more electric range). We can't see the whole picture yet, but the pieces do point to the 2016 Volt, which would be released next year sometime, being a much bigger deal than the last update, when the Volt's range was increased by three electric miles thanks to a battery capacity increase of 16 kWh to 16.5.
