1950 Chevrolet 3600 Flat Bed Customized Truck on 2040-cars

Year:1950 Mileage:22 Color: colors
Location:

Shawnee, Kansas, United States

Shawnee, Kansas, United States

1950 Chevrolet 3600 flat bed custom truck with 22 miles since restoration.  A custom bed has been fabricated from steel tubing and solid oak cabinet grade lumber.  The results of this custom bed combined with the vintage cab and front sheet metal make a very unique truck with a lot of attitude.  The drive train is a combination of new and old while the vintage appearance has been retained.
Engine/engine compartment:  The engine is a 350 Chevy motor out of a 1978 Corvette with many chrome accessories.
Chassis:  The rear end is from a newer one-ton with drum brakes and dual wheels.  A remote brake booster is frame mounted.  All six wheels are from a later model Chevy one-ton truck.  All six tires are new Uniroyal Laredo P225/70RX16 radials with raised outline lettering.  The transmission is a toploader 4 speed with a granny low gear.  The shifter has been shortened to add a custom touch to the truck.  The entire underneath of the truck has been painted semi-gloss black.
Interior:  The interior matches the exterior colors.  Many up-to-date accessories have been added to the interior such as: new gauges, turn signals, custom wood console, custom oak door panels, clock, 12 volt electric fan, vintage compass with custom stand, prism, and Pioneer AM-FM-CD stereo radio with dual custom speakers that functions from a remote control module.  New black steering wheel.  The seat has been custom upholstered to match the exterior.  The skirting is black and the seating areas are green.  A custom pattern and new foam was used to reconstruct the seat.  Black plush carpet has been installed.  The headliner is black and is a reproduction of the original.  New black sun visors.  The original AM pushbutton radio has been painted green to match.  The Pioneer stereo is custom fitted to a special console that extends from the center of the dash.  Seat belts were installed for safety.
Exterior:  The exterior of the truck has a lot of bling and lights.  When the lights are on at night, this truck will illuminate like a Christmas tree.  The four taillight assemblies are mid 1930's with blue dots.  The hood has a rare center hood ornament with a flying bird.  Chrome imitation louvers are attached in a strategic pattern giving the effects of a louvered hood.  A vintage sun visor similar to the Fenton design was installed.  All of the glass was replaced with gray safety glass.  The two piece windshield was "V" butted which eliminates the center division bar.  The rear window has a slider that opens for fresh air and ventilation.  The running boards have been custom fabricated from wood and steel.  Lake pipes have been installed giving the truck a mid 60's custom appearance...but are not functional.  New outside door handles and chrome mirrors add bright accessories to the exterior.  The headlights have aftermarket gravel protectors and eyebrow covers.  The chrome grill is new as well as the front and rear chrome bumpers.  Stainless steel side glass and wing window glass deflectors add to the exterior bling.
A custom dually bed was fabricated.  The headache rack was built using mandrel bent tubing and has a high level third brake light mounted in the center with a blue dot to match the taillight lenses.  A pair of back-up lights were installed and also have blue dots.  A storage compartment with two stainless steel latches that lock was installed in the center of the bed, just behind the lighted license plate recess.  All of the oak lumber is cabinet grade and the wood has been stained with a green tint.  Clear urethane provides a satin finish.  Bed rails were fabricated from oak as well.
Very unique design and two tone application.  The cab, doors and hood are green.  The front fenders, rear fenders and sides of the bed are black.  Green accents are used around the entire bed and bed floor for color harmony with the cab colors.

NHTSA, IIHS, and 20 automakers to make auto braking standard by 2022

Thu, Mar 17 2016

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and virtually every automaker in the US domestic market have announced a pact to make automatic emergency braking standard by 2022. Here's the full rundown of companies involved: BMW, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo (not to mention the brands that fall under each automaker's respective umbrella). Like we reported yesterday, AEB will be as ubiquitous in the future as traction and stability control are today. But the thing to note here is that this is not a governmental mandate. It's truly an agreement between automakers and the government, a fact that NHTSA claims will lead to widespread adoption three years sooner than a formal rule. That fact in itself should prevent up to 28,000 crashes and 12,000 injuries. The agreement will come into effect in two waves. For the majority of vehicles on the road – those with gross vehicle weights below 8,500 pounds – AEB will need to be standard equipment by September 1, 2022. Vehicles between 8,501 and 10,000 pounds will have an extra three years to offer AEB. "It's an exciting time for vehicle safety. By proactively making emergency braking systems standard equipment on their vehicles, these 20 automakers will help prevent thousands of crashes and save lives," said Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx said in an official statement. "It's a win for safety and a win for consumers." Read on for the official press release from NHTSA. Automakers making the commitment are Audi, BMW, FCA US LLC, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia, Maserati, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan, Porsche, Subaru, Tesla Motors Inc., Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo Car USA.

MotorWeek looks back at 1995 Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon

Sat, Jun 20 2015

MotorWeek's Retro Review series gives us a nostalgic look back at some of the best sports cars and luxury sedans available in the 1980s and '90s. For its latest clip, the show shifts gears to remember the 1995 Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon. Similar to the success of crossovers today, SUVs were tallying big sales and making big money for automakers in the mid-'90s. The Tahoe and Yukon filled slots in the market as steps down from the larger Suburban. These twins weren't wanting for space, though, with plenty of room to haul around a family. MotorWeek came away generally impressed too, and called the models some "of the better riding sport utilities we've ever experienced." This review comes with some jazzy, electric guitar licks to enjoy in the background.

Junkyard Gem: 1987 Chevrolet Turbo Sprint

Sun, Feb 6 2022

Fifteen years ago, I wrote my first-ever automotive article under the name Murilee Martin, and it didn't take me long to start writing about one of my favorite automotive subjects: the junkyard. Before I'd refined my system for documenting discarded vehicles, however, I shot a lot of boneyard photos that never got used. For today's Junkyard Gem, I have four shots from early 2007 of one of the rarest turbocharged machines of the 1980s: the Chevrolet Turbo Sprint. The Chevrolet Sprint was really a rebadged Suzuki Cultus, from the pre-Geo era when General Motors sold the Isuzu Gemini as the Chevrolet Spectrum, the Daewoo LeMans as the Pontiac LeMans and the Toyota Corolla as the Chevrolet Nova (soon enough, the Spectrum became a Geo, and the Nova became the Prizm). The second-generation Cultus appeared in 1988, becoming the Geo Metro on our shores the following year. The Turbo Sprint was available for just the last two years of the Sprint's 1985-1988 American sales run, and it appears that just a couple of thousand were sold; if I'd known at the time just how rare they were, I'd have shot more photos of this one at the now-defunct Hayward Pick Your Part. The turbocharged 993cc three-cylinder produced 70 horsepower, 22 better than the naturally-aspirated version. Since the Turbo Sprint weighed just 1,620 pounds (that's about 500 pounds lighter than a barely more powerful '22 Mitsusbishi Mirage), it was plenty of fun to drive. For 1988, the regular Sprint hatchback cost $6,380 while the Turbo Sprint listed at $8,240 (that's about $15,375 and $19,855 today, respectively). Believe it or not, a Turbo Sprint actually raced in the 24 Hours of Lemons 10 years ago, though it didn't end well. This ad is for the regular Cultus, not the Cultus Turbo, but the screaming guitars sound reasonably turbocharged. For the most part, Chevy Sprint marketing was all about cheap purchase price and stingy fuel economy… at a time when gasoline prices were cratering. Related Video:
