Selling 1975 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Classic Coupe, fully functional and in good working order. The car has just under 158,000 miles on it, with approximately half of these being highway miles I drove mostly in commuting to work between eastern Pennsylvania and New York City. As I have since retired, I no longer need the vehicle and am thus reluctantly selling it. It is my hope that the eventual purchaser will enjoy it as much as I have, either as a daily driver or as a restoration project. The good: This is a spacious car that handles and rides with a soft suspension experience that is hard to rival (I find its ride more comfortable than similar era Cadillac limousines I once drove). Because of its solidity and weight, its cushioned bench seating that truly accommodates six people comfortably, and its powered mechanical features (including its 350-hp V-8 engine), this vehicle is a pleasure to drive in a manner with which today's cars can hardly compete. Despite these size, weight, and suspension characteristics, it handles well in evasive maneuvers, something I unfortunately have had experience with in dodging the ever-prevalent deer and wildlife in my neck of the woods. Beyond my commuting, I have most enjoyably driven the car on long road trips (e.g., from Pennsylvania to Atlanta and back), and I would not hesitate to do so with it now. The air conditioning system I updated a few years back with new, more efficient than OEM equipment, and it works beautifully. The interior is in very good shape. The tires were replaced as a set a couple of years ago and still have significant tread life. I have a couple of extra spare tires (not on rims) which will go with the car. The bad: While in very good mechanical shape for a car of its age, the inevitable rust factor is present; most significantly from an appearance but not operational perspective (see pictures). There are rusted-through portions of a few inches square only at each front fender, and some rusting at the rear fenders which has not similarly broken through. A couple of years back, I had an accident at highway speed in which a deer leaped from the woods and was caught in midair at the center grill, directly between the headlights. As the police noted, the design of the car almost certainly saved my life: its solidity and flat front meant the animal was tossed aside into the opposing lane of traffic (where thankfully no one was), whereas a modern car with a sloped aerodynamic hood would have driven the animal into me through the windshield. The damage: the cast-iron front grill was smashed to smithereens (since replaced with an original OEM grill, as pictured); the frame piece above it was bent (straightened somewhat, as pictured); and the radiator needed replacement. There was no impact on the car's ride, operation, or handling. A minor collision had with the front bumper before I owned the car caused the side bumper edge to be slightly pushed inward, a cosmetic concern only and hardly noticeable. The V-8 engine provides significant power and smooth acceleration in a way that today's smaller ones tend not to, but does burn and leak a moderate amount of oil (usually a quart every five thousand miles, more if hard driving is at issue). The car averages about 15 miles per gallon, highway driving, of regular gas. The vinyl roof, as pictured, is in need of replacement. Minor points: The OEM AM radio system does not work (I believe the speakers are bad); and the seat belt reminder buzzer is stuck on (a simple repair would be to disconnect its relay). As the car has not been driven for about seven months (although I have started it up each month without difficulty and driven it a block or so each time), it needs a good exterior and interior cleaning. I am not a mechanic and have tried to accurately and fairly describe the car's condition. I am happy to provide more pictures and/or information as requested. The prior owner of the car is my mechanic, who is a Shelby race car driver for the past forty years and recently retired from his own automotive repair business in Queens, New York. He has maintained the car for me since my purchase of it from him, had owned it for many years before me (he was the second owner), and is willing to discuss its condition with any interested party. Because the car is no longer registered or insured, it cannot be test driven, although it may be inspected by appointment. Delivery will be from my home, after sale and transfer of title. One of the world's largest muscle car museums is auctioning off its cars
Mon, Jan 11 2021Rick Treworgy's Muscle Car City is one of the biggest collections of high-performance American cars in the world. With over 200 cars of mostly GM makes, it's a mecca for fans of the golden age of Detroit iron. Unfortunately, the museum will be shutting its doors for good on Jan. 17 and auctioning off most of its assets with no reserve. The collection is, to put it bluntly, astounding. Advertised as a combined 65,000-plus horsepower, it occupies a 60,000-square-foot retail space in Punta Gorda, Fla., in a former Walmart store. It make sense when you learn that founder Rick Treworgy made his fortune in the commercial real estate business. As a hobby, he began to amass a truly jaw-dropping collection of muscle cars, filling out a collection that often has every year of a particular model represented, or a grouping of the rarest and highest-performance option packages of that year or model. Often, Treworgy bought placeholders while scouring the country for even rarer versions. It helps that Muscle Car City also houses a showroom where unwanted cars are sold, as well as its own speed shop that stocks plenty of parts. There's even a '50s-style diner called Stingray's Bar and Grill. According to a 2014 episode of Car Crazy, Treworgy has 80 Corvettes alone, more than the actual Corvette Museum. Among them are 20 models from 1967, one of Treworgy's favorites. The rest span the decades from 1954 (he once had a '53 but sold it) to a recently acquired 2020 C8, which, according to The Drive, has only 300 miles on the odometer. You like Impalas? There are models of every year from 1958 to 1969. El Caminos? He's got 'em from 1964 to 1972. Novas? Every year from 1963 to 1970 is represented. Most are the more desirable examples of each breed, with four-speed transmissions, the biggest blocks, and unicorn option packages like a factory 1965 Z16 SS396 Chevelle, one of 200 that were ordered off-menu at Chevy dealerships. And don't even get us started on the Camaros, which include not one, but two COPO 1969s. Treworgy even owns the only known surviving example of a 1936 Chevrolet Phaeton, of which only seven were built. On top of it all, many of these cars are concours quality and have won awards at prestigious car shows. While it's sad to see a collection like this broken up, Treworgy told The Drive that he'd been planning to retire next year anyway. However, the COVID-19 pandemic sped up those plans, greatly reducing the number of visitors to his museum.
Chevy Bolt interior spied for first time
Wed, Oct 7 2015Chevrolet is continuing work on its Bolt EV, but thanks to some public-road testing in what looks to be somewhere in Michigan, we've captured our first look at the new hatchback's screen-intensive dash. Looking like a blend of the Chevy Sonic with the new Volt, the Bolt's interior follows a simple formula, offering a digital display in place of the traditional instrument cluster alongside a large, prominent display in the center stack. Nothing too shocking, except for the fact that both displays look larger than what's in the Volt. What's most surprising, though, is the shifter. It looks almost BMW-like in appearance. There's a dedicated park button accessible by the driver's thumb, and we're guessing a trigger on the front that can toggle the lever forward into reverse and backwards into drive. The central display, meanwhile, looks like it's running some very different looking software, compared to Chevy's usual MyLink fare. We can't be sure whether this is simply some development software that's free of polish and not intended for production, or a look at a new form of Chevy's connectivity suite. Aside from some different wheels, the exterior of this prototype looks unchanged from the last round of spy photos we captured of the new Bolt. Sorry kids, no new exterior styling to show you today. The Corvette Museum sinkhole has been filled
Wed, Feb 11 2015After swallowing eight of the most prized pieces of the collection from the National Corvette Museum, the massive sinkhole from a year ago is rapidly becoming nothing but a bad memory. Based on the museum's weekly construction update, you can barely see the remnants of the 25-foot deep hole once in the floor. The Corvette Museum's Skydome was not always going to look like this. The original hope was to keep the sinkhole there as a tourist attraction. That plan eventually fell through, though, and instead it was decided five of the less-damaged Corvettes would remain unrestored. Progress has been moving fast to get the repairs done. Even a month ago, the hole was still very visible, and the construction company used remote-controlled Bobcat loaders to fill it in. Now, the museum has launched a contest to guess how many tons of stone it took to fill in the massive crater. The winner gets a print of the 2009 Corvette ZR1 Blue Devil being lifted out.
