1973 Chevelle Ss454, B&m Th400, 12-bolt Posi, Rust Bucket on 2040-cars

US $2,300.00
Year:1973 Mileage:162027
Location:

  1. Numbers matching original SS454 car except rear axle appears to be a 1971 12-bolt instead of a 1973-correct 10-bolt.
  1. Engine:  454 LS-4 4bbl with “HI-PER PASS” block & head castings.  Hydraulic lifters, 750 CFM Quadrajet, iron exhaust manifolds.  All original smog equipment is there.  Engine is stock, not hot-rodded.
  1. Transmission:  B&M Street/Strip TH400 part number 112002.  (Original trans included, see below.)
  1. Rear axle:  12-bolt with 3.07 R&P and factory clutch-type Positraction.  Axle shafts are aftermarket Superior (Summit SAG-EV12-1).
  1. Swivel buckets.  Driver's bucket is rusty and has had its bottom metal patched up twice.  Tilt steering column.  Power windows, steering, & brakes.
  1. 1410 lbs/in front springs, 300 lbs/in rear springs.  Bilstein & Afco heavy street stock shocks. No land yacht feel.
  2. BF Goodrich Radial TA P225/70 R14 98S M+S tires on stock 14x7 "Turbine" wheels with all trim rings & center caps.  Not sure if the wheels are correct for this car.
  3. Originally had air conditioning, under-hood parts were removed, now has parts from a 1974 model:  Evaporator assembly looks different.  Not functional.
  4. Body condition:  Poor.  Very rusty, lots of small dents, decayed cheap paint.  Holes in floorboards, roof, and fenders.  Evidence of assorted repaired wreck damage.  Hood has former hood scoop hole covered with sheet metal.  Value of car is in engine, trans, & rear end.  Maybe also the stiffened SS suspension, grill, tilt column, swivel buckets, console, & dash.
  5. Paint:  Originally silver with black Vinyl top.  Then blue, then orange, now faded burgundy.  Vinyl top is rotted off, about a square foot's worth of many rust holes are now covered with fiberglass mesh & asphalt tar to keep most of the water out.
  6. Interior condition:  Very poor.  Considerable damage due to moisture, sun, & age.  Whole electrical system is flaky.  Interior color scheme is black.
  7. Mechanical condition:
    1. Engine needs short block rebuild:  It knocks occasionally, cranks unevenly,  and uses a quart of oil every 300 miles.  Heads were rebuilt about 1998; cylinder bore measured 4.250 (never been rebored).
    1. Trans has about 10,000 miles since purchased from B&M, who calibrated it wrong.  1st to 2nd shift is luxury car so it can't bark the tires, 2nd to 3rd shift is a bang shift that threatens to break parts.  Shift RPM was 3500, now changed by me to 4500.  It's a smog motor, and runs out of breath at 5,000.  B&M used to be a good trans company; no one there knows what to do about it.
    1. Rear axle is in very good shape.
    1. All suspension rubber is good.
    1. Battery is about eight months old.
    1. Car has been a dependable daily driver since 1995.
  1. Performance:  Fair acceleration.  Decent cornering.  11 MPG freeway, 7 MPG city.
  1. Car's weight unladen, wet, with ~15 gallons of gas in the tank:  2550 front, 1740 rear, 4290 total.
  1. Current issues:
    1. Needs front brake pads, rotors turned, and maybe a wheel bearing.
    2. Needs light switch repair or replacement to get dash lights to turn on.
    3. Right front tire needs rebalancing.
    4. Right muffler is falling apart.
    5. AC compressor 'free-wheeling' bearing started to make noise, so removed belt.
  1. Spare parts included:
    1. Original suspension springs.
    1. Original numbers matching TH400 with worn-out (not burnt) forward clutch and deceased (probably broken) 2nd gear band.
    1. Original worn-out console shifter.  Current shifter is a rebuilt original.
    1. New trunk lid rubber seal.
    1. Correct carburetor in poor condition.
    2. Original radio.  Currently has a Kraco aftermarket AM/FM cassette that doesn't work.
    3. B&M governor weight & spring kit.
    4. Large box of small parts.
    5. Log books, all receipts, photos, parts catalogs, magazine articles, and factory service, overhaul, & smog manuals.
  2. Purchased in 1991 used from a classic truck parts business in Portland, Oregon.
  3. Purchaser to arrange pickup or shipping.  Payment by cash or PayPal.
  4. Selling because I'm replacing it as my daily driver with a free 2004 Saab.  You can drive it home, but it's being sold strictly as-is.

Weekly Recap: Lincoln Continental serves up the style, Cadillac CT6 delivers the substance in New York

Sat, Apr 4 2015

Lincoln and Cadillac grabbed the spotlight this week at the New York Auto Show in a dramatic fashion that evoked the brands' glory days. America's two luxury carmakers went toe-to-toe with their glittering reveals and plans for ambitious expansion. Both were selling their technology, style and the promise of a better future. Cadillac vs. Lincoln. At the Javits Center, 2015 seemed a lot like 1956. Neither company was interested in drawing comparisons with the other, which is fair, and accurate. They're in vastly different places in terms of sales and the pace of their turnarounds, but they hope to reach the same eventual destination at the pinnacle of the luxury-car world. Lincoln used the element of surprise to great effect with the Continental concept. A production version is still at least a year away, and the company was vague on details. Officially, we don't even know if it is front- or rear-wheel drive, though speculation abounds. Who cares? The seats can be adjusted 30 ways! The Continental also showed off a bold chrome grille that will be the new face of Lincoln. The blue bomber also rolled on blinged-out 21-inch polished aluminum wheels, used a 3.0-liter EcoBoost engine and had huge LED head lights with "laser-assisted" high beams. All of this resulted in almost blinding attention. The concept drew rave reviews, stirred controversy with Bentley designers who argued Lincoln ripped them off, and most importantly, pointed a way forward for the newly determined brand that hopes to compete with Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Cadillac and Lexus. View 32 Photos Meanwhile, Cadillac showed the CT6, a finished product that will top its range and is loaded with the best and latest technologies General Motors has at its disposal. With production starting late this year, Cadillac had more specifics at the ready. Engines? Cadillac has a couple V6s and a turbo four for sure. It's working on a hybrid, and has considered a V-Series variant. It's based on a new rear-wheel-drive, aluminum-intensive chassis called Omega, features an advanced collision-mitigation system with automatic braking and has a cabin that's laden with "leathers, exotic woods and carbon fiber." It will be assembled at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck factory and goes on sale next year. At this point, Cadillac is more than willing to talk about every except for the price. The devil was not in the details for Cadillac, as evidenced by the CT6. But it wasn't for Lincoln either.

2014 Chevrolet C7 Corvette wastes no time zooming into Jay Leno's Garage

Thu, 24 Jan 2013

Where else would you expect the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray to show up first? Although this time it isn't exactly in Jay Leno's Garage, Leno instead playing an away game at Brown's Classic Auto in Scottsdale, Arizona. Nor does Leno drive the car, instead taking an 11-minute walkaround of the new American sports car with General Motors design head Ed Welburn, the same man who recently brought by a string of classic Corvettes to the talk show host's California compound.
It is, admittedly, a love-fest for the American sports car now featuring 450 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, but one that also features admissions about previous Corvette seats like "they were kinda rough," and the explanation that labeling the coupe "Stingray" means not having to call it "the base Corvette." On top of that, Welburn also explains the proper application of the term "dashboard." You can watch it all in the video below.

GM files for Z71 Trail Boss trademark

Mon, Jan 26 2015

Try as they might to keep their plans a secret, automakers have their hands tipped through a variety of methods – be they through loose lips, spy shots or patent and trademark applications. That's how we know, in this instance, that General Motors is working on (or at least considering) an off-road machine wearing the name Z71 Trail Boss – the name which our compatriots at AutoGuide.com tell us that GM has registered for use on light-duty trucks. Now if that alphanumeric designator sounds familiar, it should. GM has long used it to designate the off-road packages on many of its body-on-frame trucks from Chevy and GMC. These days you can order a Z71 package on the Chevy Colorado, Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban and on the GMC Canyon, Sierra and Yukon. The package typically includes components like a beefed-up suspension bits, high-capacity air cleaner and underbody protection plates. The Trail Boss designator would seem to suggest something further reaching than a suspension package, though. Just what it would entail we don't know; minds immediately start running toward Chevy or GMC going after the Ford F-150 Raptor, but we'll likely be looking at something closer to the Trailhawk packages Jeep offers on the likes of the Renegade and Cherokee.
