Vehicle came out of Maryland. This car was acquired from the 3rd owner I believe. It was basically an original survivor that has had a repaint recently. Real SS car with some nice options! When I bought it I drove it all the way home to NY and did some minor work on it here and there as needed. Surprising how nice this car feels and rides. Almost everything in the car works, including the power windows, wipers, radio and even the horn!

Body is VERY STRAIGHT with excellent original gaps. Doors open and close flawlessly. I don't think you'll find a nicer original car for the money than this one!

Under the hood lies the factory 409ci/340hp 4bbl. motor. This is a REAL passenger car 409 with the "X" on the driver's side of the block, and even has the "409SS " on the dipstick. It has been upgraded with a Holley 750cfm 4bbl. double-pumper carburetor, MSD plug wires and external performance ignition coil, as well as full headers into dual exhaust. Radiator is also upgraded to an aluminum unit for better cooling (with original fan shroud mounted on it).

Mechanically it fires right up and sounds great. Transmission is solid and shifts good through all the gears without any noises or grinding. I drove the car about once a week, both around town and on the highway and it performs great. You can cruise with it on the highway all day at 65mph and I would trust it to drive anywhere at the drop of a hat. Very easy to drive with power steering and brakes.

Interior is basically all stock with no modifications. Seats are in good shape (small rip by lower driver's side from getting in and out). Carpet is older but presentable. Door panels are in decent shape, with a couple of small rips by the armrests. Headliner should be replaced. Dash has had a plastic "cap" put over the original, which had cracks in it. Steering wheel in fair shape with a few cracks. Console in fairly good shape. Sunvisors need to be redone/replaced. Overall very presentable for a nice driver. KEEP IN MIND THIS IS MOST LIKELY THE ORIGINAL AND UNMOLESTED INTERIOR IN THE CAR.

Underside has a GOOD FRAME on it. Normal scaly surface rust from decades of use. Floors appear to be in good shape overall with a couple of small areas that may need a small patch or two, but NO large holes. Trunk pan is SOLID and has had a patch on the middle flat section. Overall structurally sound and in good shape.

Chrome is original and presentable for a driver with some pitting throughout and minor surface rust. Bumpers should be replaced. Side trim looks fairly good but could use new tape inserts to make it pop.

Previous owner gave me a bunch of parts for this car as well so they are available to the winning bidder at an additional price if desired:

1) new gas tank
2) new trunk weatherstripping
3) used front bumper ends
4) new rear license plate trim piece
5) new rear taillight housings
6) new interior scuff plates
7) various other minor odds and ends

The old girl is NOT perfect by any means of course so please keep that in mind when bidding. Paint is in FAIR/GOOD overall shape throughout (could use a good wetsand and buff as it has some orange peel here and there and could have been prepped better before painting of course), with various imperfections throughout as it was NOT a $10K paintjob. Looks good from 20 feet. Not working: gas gauge (needs new sending unit), clock, windows work but are rather slow, tachometer (not connected), perhaps a bulb or two could use replacing. Carburetor needs to be primed when first started. Window trim is pitted and has rust spots in various places. Missing: cowl tag, door and trunk weatherstripping, driver's side sunvisor. A couple of the tires need replacing due to dry rot. Exhaust has a rattle and needs one hanger replaced.

So overall she is not perfect and to do it justice should be completely restored, or you can just drive it as is. Please note, I cannot remember every single issue with the car, nor do I know everything wrong with it, as it is after all over 50 years old so keep that in mind.

If you just want a GOOD LOOKING ORIGINAL SURVIVOR that runs/drives great and is loaded with rare options, then this is the car for you. If you want a show car, it will need a considerable amount of restoration to bring it up to that level of course. I ENCOURAGE ANYONE BIDDING OR SERIOUSLY INTERESTED TO COME LOOK AT IT IN PERSON. I WILL BE GLAD TO SHOW IT TO YOU TOP TO BOTTOM SO YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU'RE GETTING INTO.

Top horsepower-per-dollar cars in 2017

Tue, Feb 17 2015

Bang for the buck. That quasi-scientific statistic is bandied about by motor heads everywhere from classrooms to barrooms, though the truth of the matter is that it's exceedingly complex to measure. A fair performance-per-dollar index would include something like cross-referencing MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price) with point-to-point times on a track or driving route, which is obviously hard to do comprehensively. But, for the sheer joy of talking about cars and playing with a big spreadsheet, there's always the horsepower-per-dollar index, which is more straightforward, albeit hilariously flawed. There are vagaries even with this simple formula, of course: MSRP for vehicles can change at a moment's notice, to say nothing of the bottom-line shifting that happens with local deals or showroom negotiation. For this list we're running with the straight MSRP wherever possible, and as recently reported as we can get it. All the vehicles on this list are 2017 models, and all trims are reported where the lowest price and differing power levels intersect. Some choices were made for personal preference and some for sanity, avoiding things like all 48 trim levels of the Ford Transit, all with the same horsepower). If this list were a simple top ten, or even a top fifty, you'd be bored to tears with all the red, white and blue that is represented. Following perfectly with conventional wisdom, American cars really do lead the world where hp/$ is concerned. So, for the sake of variety (and the sheer joy of seeing a minivan 'win' one round of this thing) I've sorted out some top five and bottom five lists for broad power categories. Let's dive in. Less Than 100 Horsepower Okay, okay, this is hardly a category we'll grant you. But we've often tried to click off all the sub-100-hp cars on sale in the US, and making this list gave us an excuse. It also illustrates that none of these smallish vehicles bring cheap horsepower to the table - for that you'll need a motorcycle. The segment-leading Chevy Spark (above) asks just over $139 for each hp, and that Smart Fortwo Electric Drive has hp on sale for about the same price as its very distant family cousin, the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG (insert your favorite Smart joke here... we know you want to).

Autoblog's Editors' Picks: Our complete list of the best new vehicles

Mon, May 13 2024

It's not easy to earn an “EditorsÂ’ Picks” at Autoblog as part of the rating and review process that every new vehicle goes through. Our editors have been at it a long time, which means weÂ’ve driven and reviewed virtually every new car you can go buy on the dealer lot. There are disagreements, of course, and all vehicles have their strengths and weaknesses, but this list features what we think are the best new vehicles chosen by Autoblog editors. We started this formal review process back in 2018, so there's quite of few of them now. So what does it mean to be an EditorsÂ’ Pick? In short, it means itÂ’s a car that we can highly recommend purchasing. There may be one, multiple, or even zero vehicles in any given segment that we give the green light to. What really matters is that itÂ’s a vehicle that weÂ’d tell a friend or family member to go buy if theyÂ’re considering it, because itÂ’s a very good car. The best way to use this list is is with the navigation links below. Click on a segment, and you'll quickly arrive at the top rated pickup truck or SUV, for example. Use the back button to return to these links and search in another segment, like sedans. If youÂ’ve been keeping up with our monthly series of the latest vehicles to earn EditorsÂ’ Pick status, youÂ’re likely going to be familiar with this list already. If not, welcome to the complete list that weÂ’ll be keeping updated as vehicles enter (and others perhaps exit) the good graces of our editorial team. We rate a new car — giving it a numerical score out of 10 — every time thereÂ’s a significant refresh or if it happens to be an all-new model. Any given vehicle may be impressive on a first drive, but we wait until itÂ’s in the hands of our editors to put it through the same type of testing as every other vehicle that rolls through our test fleet before giving it the EditorsÂ’ Pick badge. This ensures consistency and allows more voices to be heard on each individual model. And just so you donÂ’t think weÂ’ve skipped trims or variants of a model, we hand out the EditorsÂ’ Pick based on the overarching model to keep things consistent. So, when you read that the 3 Series is an EditorsÂ’ Pick, yes, that includes the 330i to the M3 and all the variants in between. If thereÂ’s a particular version of that car we vehemently disagree with, we make sure to call that out.

Consumer Reports criticizes small turbo engines for misleading performance, fuel economy claims [w/video]

Tue, 05 Feb 2013

Consumer Reports has taken aim at at small-displacement, forced-induction engines, saying the powerplants don't manage to deliver on automaker fuel economy claims. Manufacturers have long held that smaller, turbocharged engines pack all power of their larger displacement cousins with significantly better fuel economy, but the research organization says that despite scoring high EPA economy numbers, the engines are no better than conventional drivetrains in both categories. Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing for Consumer Reports, says the forced induction options "are often slower and less fuel efficient than larger four and six-cylinder engines."
Specifically, CR calls out the new Ford Fusion equipped with the automaker's Ecoboost 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. The institute's researchers found the engine, which is a $795 option over the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder, fails to match competitors in acceleration and served up 25 miles per gallon in testing, putting the sedan dead last among other midsize options.
The Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Sonata Turbo and Ford Escape 2.0T all got dinged for the same troubles, though Consumer Reports has found the turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the BMW 328i does deliver on its promises. You can check out the full press release below. You can also read the full study on the Consumer Reports site, or scroll down for a short video recap.
