Up for auction is a 1964 Impala SS Convertible that is somewhat rare because of the original color combination of Bahama green exterior, saddle interior, and beige convertible top. It was originally sold new in California so the carb setup is slightly different. I've been told it was in the same family most of its life. This is a matching numbers car with a 327/300 hp engine and Powerglide tranny. It appears to be all original mechanically with engine and tranny rebuilt professionally in the last 12-15 months. Actually everything mechanically has been rebuilt or replaced with new exhaust, brakes, springs, shocks, alternator, starter, battery, suspension system, and carburetor.

Very little rust was found in front of each rear wheel and repaired professionally. It was repainted witright rear outer cove mouldins soonh base/clear and looks like a new car. There is no sign of any rust on any of the original fenders, doors, hood, rocker panels, and trunk. Much of the original chrome was used in puting it together after the paint. Most rubber, cardboard, and parts that deteriorate from age have been replaced. I replaced dented mouldings with good reproduction pieces and some NOS parts.I have replaced the drivers side eyebrow moulding with a perfect NOS moulding after I took the pictures.I will replace the right rear outer cove moulding soon because of a small dent.

Original glass is good. Five new tires have been purchased. Front end has been aligned. Convertible top is in very good condition.

All interior chrome is like new with no pitting. Carpet was replaced a few years ago and is very good. The rest of the interior is original and in very good condition. I have a new saddle top boot.  This is a car that is close to a survivor. All body panels are GM panels. The bumpers are brand new only because of both center sections were banged up. Chrome on the ends looked shiny and new.

Options are power steering, AM/FM push button radio, padded dash, tinted windshield, rear seat speaker w/fader switch, rear manual antenna, PG. It was purchased with wire wheel covers from new. I replaced them with near NOS  SS wheel covers. I will include the wire wheel covers if wanted. They are in very good condition.

I have done a few frame off restorations and this car is close to that condition but with relatively few replacement parts. It runs and handles like a new car. I have had a dozen Impalas and this is the nicest one I've had. This car needs nothing as far as I can tell.  The color combination is one I have never seen before.

GM recalling nearly 4,000 vehicles over airbag concerns

Thu, 31 Jan 2013

Four different General Motors vehicles from the 2012 model year are being recalled over a potential airbag issue. The driver's side airbag shorting bar in the 2012 Buick Verano and 2012 Chevrolet Camaro, Cruze and Sonic might make contact with the airbag terminals, even during a crash. If so, the airbag won't deploy when it should, possibly increasing injury to the driver.
The recall is expected to begin on February 13 for the 3,896 units that might be affected. GM will notify owners who can then take their vehicles to dealers to have the airbag coil replaced. A bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration below has more info.

Meet Alex Archer, the engineer behind GM's power-sliding center console

Sat, Feb 15 2020

In 2009, a GM manager complained to a 59-year-old GM technician about the hassle of retrieving items from a pickup truck bed after driving shifted the cargo. In two days, the tech had come up with the ideas that, ten years later, would debut as the MultiPro tailgate. The engineering teams kept the tailgate secret in part by hiding mock-ups in a locked storage closet in GM's Vehicle Engineering Center in Warren Michigan for two years. A piece in the Detroit Free Press reveals that another storage closet in Warren would play the same role in a different cloak-and-dagger operation, this time for the power-sliding center console in GM's new full-sized SUVs. During a meeting in early 2017, bosses gave the job of the console's creation to 24-year-old design release engineer Alex Archer, just two years out of Stanford University with a degree in engineering and product design.  This time, the catalyst for the feature was an internal GM think tank called co:lab, where employees suggest ideas. Execs gave Archer the task because "They needed someone willing to ask a lot of questions," her 36-month mandate to produce a six-way console that could be a standard cubby or a gaping maw able to swallow four gallon jugs or hide a secret compartment. Clearly, she succeeded. It took Archer and the team nine months to devise a prototype, another six months to get the green light for production. As with the tailgate, the team working on the console grew to include designers, production engineers, and suppliers. Archer, now 26, shepherded the process, and her name is on the patent. "It took a ton of people, I'm just somebody who stuck with it the whole time," she said. GM like her work well enough to produce the "Day in the Life" segment above, five months before the world would hear about the console. Archer's path to engineering was as unlikely as getting the job for the console. She had entered Stanford with plans to be a doctor. But an innovation class during her freshman year, and a sophomore summer spent helping her grandfather rebuild a 1937 MG engine recharted her course. Her grandfather told her, "You know, you could be an engineer for a car company." Consumer reaction to Archer's work won't be far off, the SUVs slated to hit dealerships soon. Meanwhile, she's busy on something that could be just as intense as the console: Restoring a 1955 Packard Clipper in her garage. Head to Freep to check out the story of Archer and the console. Next-gen Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra may use carbon fiber

Thu, Dec 7 2017

It's been generally accepted that the next generation of full-size GM trucks will use some sort of strong, lightweight material for the beds while retaining steel for the cab. While aluminum seems like the most obvious choice, according to Automotive News, the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra will incorporate both aluminum and carbon fiber in their beds. The publication cites sources from within GM, though it seems the introduction of this comparatively exotic material mix is still a few years off. While carbon fiber is both stronger and lighter than steel and aluminum, it takes significantly more time and money to produce, essentially relegating the material to small-volume cars. The main benefit for trucks is the resulting reduction in weight to improve fuel economy without sacrificing the tough, rugged capabilities truck buyers expect. The Ford F-150 made the switch to aluminum for the 2015 model year and it's proved highly successful. It seemed like it was only a matter of time before the competition followed suit. Automotive News says that the next-gen trucks will launch with aluminum beds and that it will take a couple of years before we'll see any carbon fiber incorporated into the design. Even then, only look for the composite material on higher-trim models, with a trickle down to lower-spec trucks possible further in the future. In 2011, GM announced it was working with Japan-based Teijin Limited on a carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic. There's a good chance that material's introduction will be on trucks.
