For sale is my beloved Nassau Blue 1998 Corvette coupe. I've owed the car for 3 years, put nearly 38,000 miles on it, done virtually all the work myself (Dad and Grandpa were both mechanics, and I'm pretty hardcore for a shade-tree). Currently at my house near Easton, PA (18042). I've loved this car to death, but I'm doing pretty well financially and am looking to upgrade, possibly to a C7Z. With that in mind, I have designed this ad to be as transparent and direct as possible about all advantages and problems of this car:

In June, I completed an absolutely biblical 100-man-hour upgrade/maintenance program for the car, including the following:

New C5 Z06 Clutch
New Flywheel
Pilot Bearing
New OEM Clutch Slave Cylinder
New OEM Clutch Master Cylinder
Tick Performance Speed Bleeder
New Torque Tube Bushings
New Fuel Filter
New C5 Z06 3-Rib Differential (No while or hum at all, period) including diff seals
Trans opened, serviced, including fastidious resealing. Exterior of the trans and rear end are absolutely BONE DRY.

The driveline and rear suspension were thoroughly cleaned when dismounted as well.

Additionally, the following modifications/replacements have been done in the last couple years:

7-Layer custom carbon fiber targa top from user SOCalVettes with UV-proof clear coat
New GM OEM targa top weatherstrip (not the $30/side Ebay stuff, the real deal, have receipts)
00-04 TPMS upgrade package with new FOBS courtesy of GM Parts House
C5 Z06 shocks
Metal sway bar end links
New Starter
New Trottle position sensor
TB, air filters fully dismounted and cleaned in the last 4 months
New Ignition Switch
C5 Magnesium competition wheels (No curbing/digs, but the finish is chipped on two of the wheels in a couple spots)\
Carbon wrapped fuel door (have original in perfect condition included with car)
C5 Z06 titanium axle back exhaust.

All fluids except brake fluid have been done recently. Oil just changed with Mobil 1 (always) and a Bosch filter in May, 87% left according to the clock.

I have put 650 miles on the car since these repairs with zero issues, including city driving, commuting, highway, and even a number of extremely rapid pulls. No leaks, No chatter. No overheating. No problems.

Car has 118,000ish miles on it. Yes, that's a fair amount, but the engine idles flat as a table, does not burn or leak any oil, and the car now has a substantial number of high price wear components that are newer than what you'd get on a car with super low miles.  Only problems with the car are normal under-front-bumper chin scrapes, a small 1" scratch on the passenger door, a weak passenger side window regulator (still works fine) and the driver's power seat struggles a bit moving forward only, but starts fine with a little nudge.

$500 deposit due in 48 hours of auction close. You are bidding for the opportunity to own this car, not the opportunity to think about it if your settlement comes in or your boat sells. Contact me by message to view/test drive the car before bidding, otherwise, I have described the car's condition accurately. For sale locally, so I reserve the right to end the auction early if it sells.

Can DARPA hack into a Chevy Impala through OnStar?

Mon, Feb 9 2015

An ex-video game wizard named Dan Kaufman tracked a circuitous route to becoming the head of the Software Innovation Division at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. DARPA normally makes these pages because of its work with autonomous vehicles and automobile technology that overlaps with military applications, but for the past five years Kaufman and his multiple research teams have been working on creating unhackable software code that could be used in military drones. Part of that work has involved hacking into just about everything else, and as a segment on 60 Minutes reveals, that includes cars. The masterminds discovered a way to hack into OnStar, the General Motors telematics system. After figuring out how to hook into OnStar's emergency communication system, they overwhelmed it with data. While the computer was busy trying to manage the overrun of data, the research team inserted code that took control of the sedan's other computers, giving it control. So while reporter Leslie Stahl tooled around in a parking lot, a DARPA researcher with a laptop would occasionally take control of the car, like by applying its brakes or, conversely, removing the ability for Stahl to use the brakes. Hacking into vehicles has been in the news for years: Car and Driver ran a feature on the various ways cars could be hacked in 2011, two hackers released a car-hacking code at the hacker-fest Defcon in 2013 and demonstrated how it worked on a Toyota Prius and Ford Escape, and German researchers demonstrated how they could hack into BMW's Connected Drive remote-services system last week via an attack on the cars' telematics units. This isn't about GM or Onstar or the future; hacking into cars of all kinds isn't coming, it's here, and it doesn't take the half-billion-dollar annual budget of a small DARPA division to do it. Check out the 60 Minutes video on the CBS site (you can watch the entire video from a mobile device without logging in). The OnStar hacking starts at 6:45, but it's worth watching what leads up to that. News Source: Jalopnik Chevrolet Safety Technology Infotainment Autonomous Vehicles Videos Sedan hacking 60 minutes

Frustrated GM investors ask what more Mary Barra can do

Mon, Oct 22 2018

DETROIT — General Motors Co Chief Executive Mary Barra has transformed the No. 1 U.S. automaker in her almost five years in charge, but that is still not enough to satisfy investors. Ahead of third-quarter results due on Oct. 31, GM shares are trading about 6 percent below the $33 per share price at which they launched in 2010 in a post-bankruptcy initial public offering. The Detroit carmaker's stock is down 22 percent since Barra took over in January 2014. After hitting an all-time high of $46.48 on Oct. 24, 2017, the shares have declined 33 percent. In the same period, the Standard & Poor's 500 index has climbed 7.8 percent. Several shareholders contacted by Reuters said GM could face a third major action by activist shareholders in less than four years if the share price does not improve. "I've been expecting it," said John Levin, chairman of Levin Capital Strategies. "It just seems a tempting morsel to somebody." Levin's firm owns more than seven million GM shares. Barra has guided the company through the settlement of a federal criminal probe of a mishandled safety recall, sold off money-losing European operations, and returned $25 billion to shareholders through dividends and stock buybacks from 2012 through 2017. GM declined to comment for this story, but the company's executives privately express frustration with the market's reluctance to see it as anything more than a manufacturer tied mainly to auto market sales cycles. GM's profitable North American truck and SUV business and its money-making China operations are valued at just $14 billion, excluding the value of GM's stake in its $14.6 billion Cruise automated vehicle business and its cash reserves from its $44 billion market capitalization. The recent slump in the Chinese market, GM's largest, and plateauing U.S. demand are ratcheting up the pressure. GM is one of the few global automakers without a founding family or a government to serve as a bulwark against corporate raiders. In 2015, a group led by investor Harry Wilson pressed GM to launch a $5 billion share buyback, and commit to what is now an $18 billion ceiling on the level of cash the company would hold. In 2017, GM fended off a call by hedge fund manager David Einhorn to split its common stock shares into two classes. Einhorn, whose firm still owned more than 21 million shares at the end of June, declined to comment about GM's stock price. Other investors said there were no clear alternatives to Barra's approach.

Train derailment leaves Jeep, GMC, Chevy pickups damaged in Nevada

Thu, Jul 11 2019

An unfortunate train derailment is causing some inevitable delays for pickup truck customers west of Nevada. Yesterday morning, 33 train cars derailed in Lincoln County, and the cargo that was being transported consisted of new Jeep Gladiators and Wranglers along with Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras, judging from the photos released by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. The train derailment also caused the adjacent road to be closed, and local law enforcement recommends the area is to be avoided as long as it takes to clean it all up. In the photos, damaged Jeeps and other trucks sit either on their wheels or shiny-side-down as the incident is being assessed. Available information says there were thankfully no personal injuries, but itÂ’s not likely any of these trucks will end up in customer hands, even with a significant discount. Pre-registration transport damage, significant or not, has often resulted in scrapping complete vehicles so that manufacturers can steer clear of liability issues. Hooniverse.com, which also reported on the incident, notes a couple of interesting things. Firstly, the upended Gladiator seems to have a pretty sturdy support structure for its glasshouse, thanks to its new rollbars. Another matter is that the GM trucks, also pictured, wear discreet and temporary transport steel wheels instead of fancier items, perhaps to deter thieves eager to grab a shiny set from trucks on their way to the dealer. Still, itÂ’s a shame these vehicles could never fulfill their hauling purposes in the hands of new owners. Perhaps the manufacturers can at least use the damage for data-gathering purposes.
