1986 Chevrolet Corvette on 2040-cars
Jacksonville, Florida, United States
This is the original commemorative edition MK corvette, with very low miles and in almost new condition. The cat back
exhaust has been replaced with an appropriate OEM type, new tires, brakes, all fluids were changes and it was tuned
up.The rims were refinished to the original luster but the prior owner decided to have them refinished in 1985
style to give some contrast to the all aluminum finish 86.Other than this the car is completely original and
everything works like new. Here is an article on the car from Corvette Magazine,"A category of one", which explains
the history on this rare car.My particular MK corvette has the Automatic transmission with Z51 package, all
documentation on window sticker and tank sheet proves it is the real deal, not a clone or tribute as with so many
others out there being misrepresented.Sorry I will not export the car and it sold as is where is no warranty.
Of the 50 Malcolm Konner Special Edition coupes Bowling Green assembled, 20 came with manual transmissions; the
other 30 had automatics. Ten of the cars with manuals and an equal number of the automatics were built with the
optional Z51 Performance Package, while the 30 remaining Malcolm Konner Special Edition Corvettes came with
standard suspension.
When it came to delivering the cars, the Konner family’s idea was to re-create what Malcolm Konner had done some
27 years prior. “In 1959, my father dreamed up the idea of organizing a rally with new Corvettes being driven
from the St. Louis factory to the GM training facility on Route 22 in Union, New Jersey,” says RJ Konner. “Dad
rented a plane and flew customers to St. Louis, where they took delivery of their new Corvettes. It was really a
fantastic event, with Pat Boone at the GM training center in Union flagging the Corvettes across the finish line.
So we thought, why not try to do something like this again?”
While Gary Konner attended to all of the details involved with getting the cars built and sold, RJ Konner ironed
out all of the logistical details necessary for a mass caravan from the assembly plant in Kentucky to the
dealership in New Jersey. After all needed approvals from Chevy were obtained, the Konner family waged an ad
campaign in various enthusiast publications to drum up interest. With most of the 50 cars sold, they chartered a
jet to fly the buyers to Bowling Green to pick up the cars, and together they all drove back to New Jersey.
Like most C4 Corvettes, the majority of the 50 Malcolm KonnerSpecial Edition Corvettes were driven frequently and
many eventually ended up in a sad state of disrepair. Some have undoubtedly been repainted a different color, and
without the unique Black/Silver Beige finish and badging they look like any other ’86, so it’s entirely
possible that a few of the survivors are in the hands of people who don’t realize what they have. The cars were
not built in sequence and don’t have special serial numbers, but they can still be identified by the unique
Malcolm Konner Special Edition option code 4001ZA, which is on the window sticker and build sheet. (Copies of these
for any C4 can be purchased from the National Corvette Museum.) The option codes, as well as the paint and interior
codes, for C4s are also normally found on stickers affixed to the inside of the center-compartment door. All of the
Malcolm Konner Special Edition Corvettes list “spec” (short for special) for the paint code.
When well-known Corvette collector Bill Hermanek discovered our feature car only one block away from his house, it
was still wearing its original paint, so it was apparent that this was one of the 50 Malcolm Konner cars. At the
time, Hermanek wasn’t looking for another Corvette, but the rarity of the car intrigued him. After some intense
negotiations, he added it to his collection. “The odometer showed 90,000 miles,” Hermanek tells us, “and it
needed a variety of things, but it ran and drove great, so I went ahead and bought it.”
Hermanek is currently president of the Long Island NCRS chapter, so it’s no surprise that he’s taking pains to
bring the car back to “as new” condition. The paint on the hood was significantly deteriorated, so had got it
refinished. The interior is all original, and a good cleaning brought that back to near-new condition. The car’s
special brass console plaque was missing, and Hermanek assumed he’d have to find someone capable of making a
reproduction for him, but a phone call to RJ Konner solved that dilemma. “I mentioned that the plaque was missing
and he said he happened to have one that he was kind enough to send me!” says Hermanek.
Hermanek had the car judged at a local National Corvette Restorers Society meet soon after he bought it in August
2010 and scored a 93.3, which yielded a Second Flight ribbon. After correcting a few more items he had it judged
again in early May, and this time around landed a Top Flight award. Moving forward, Hermanek plans to continue
improving the car and, as with all of the Corvettes in his collection, he fully intends to drive and enjoy it at
every opportunity.

2016 Chevy Volt powertrain technical details
Wed, Feb 11 2015The last time General Motors launched a Chevy Volt, it was operating without really knowing how people would use the plug-in hybrid. Sure, it had experience with the EV1, but the Volt was a new kind of car, and you can see in the archives just how much time GM spent explaining this fresh, new powertrain to potential customers. Then, once the vehicle was released, the company collected voluntary data from a large number of owners to learn about their driving and charging habits. The company also asked them what they wanted most in the new version. There's got to be an algorithm buried somewhere in GM headquarters that was used to take all of the numbers GM collected and spat out the headline figures for the 2016 Volt: 50 miles of EV range and 41 miles per gallon. Another important number – price – is something GM isn't talking about yet (expect it in April or May), but the company is sharing some powertrain details about the upcoming car. At a preview lunch in Detroit last week for the SAE 2015 Hybrid & Electric Vehicles Technologies Symposium that's happening now in California, GM engineers Peter Savagian (who is presenting a paper on the new inverter used in the updated Volt) and Tim Grewe (talking about the entire second-generation powertrain) sat down with AutoblogGreen to tell us about the Volt's all-new propulsion system: The overall gist is that the new Voltec 5ET50 drive unit is lighter, smaller and more powerful thanks to a redesigned two-motor traction drive. As previously reported, the new engine is a 1.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder that offers 101-horsepower (at 5,600 RPM). Grewe said it's "great for range extension." The electric motor side of the powertrain offers 149 motoring horsepower from a two-motor, continuously variable transaxle. Initially, the new engine will be made in Mexico. GM will move production to Flint, MI during the first year it makes the 2016 Volt. The battery is slightly bigger in the new Volt – 18.4 kWh compared to 16.5 in the current-gen – and will have less range variation in the cold. GM is also using more of the overall capacity in the pack in the 2016 Volt than in previous versions, but is not saying how much more. GM is not ready to publish acceleration times just yet, but the 2016 Volt has improved numbers, especially when going from 30-60 miles per hour. Most everything on the new powertrain has become more efficient compared to the first-gen Volt.
Watch this week's Top Gear America used-car challenge
Sat, Sep 9 2017Top Gear America is back for the penultimate episode of the first season. Used car challenges were some of the highlights of the original UK edition. In our exclusive clip, Tom Ford, Antron Brown and William Fichtner run their $7,000 sports cars in a drag race. As expected, the trio chose very different cars for the challenge. Watch the video to see if a Subaru WRX's all-wheel drive can overcome a power deficit to beat a Ford Mustang and a Chevy Corvette. Brown and Fichtner also spend some time relaxing with an old Jeep Wagoneer. Like them, we're really hoping Jeep will bring back the Wagoneer nameplate. Brown also drives a Maserati Levante, proving that not all family cars need be boring. This week's guest star is actor, rapper and former host of Pimp My Ride, Xzibit. Top Gear America airs Sundays at 8 p.m. Eastern on BBC America. Related Video: Celebrities TV/Movies Chevrolet Ford Subaru Top Gear exclusive top gear america
A conversation with GM's Mark Reuss on MPG, aluminum and Corvettes
Wed, Feb 19 2014There was plenty to talk about when General Motors hosted its annual mid-December holiday media reception a few months ago. GM had just decided to pull its global Chevrolet brand out of major European markets, where Chevys have competed directly with GM Europe Opel and Vauxhall vehicles, and the US government had sold its last remaining shares of GM stock. But most important was the company's just-reshuffled leadership. Post-bankruptcy CEO Dan Akerson had announced that he would step aside and that 52-year-old Mary Barra would replace him on January 15. Not only would she be the first woman to lead a major automaker, she would also be GM's first engineer CEO since Bob Stempel in the early 1990s. "I look at 2013 and 2014, as the retooling of General Motors" - Mark Reuss Replacing her as executive VP for global product development (and purchasing and supply chain) would be 49-year-old Mark Reuss, who had served a stellar four years as North American president, and elevated to corporate president (from executive VP and CFO) would be 42-year-old Dan Amman. All three are relatively young auto enthusiasts who are liked and respected inside and outside the company, and their collective talents and experience are highly complementary. I've interviewed Barra and found her smart, personable and knowledgeable, though she carefully walks the corporate line in speaking and answering questions. I met and chatted with Ammann for the first time at that holiday reception, and he made a good first impression. But I've known Reuss for some time as a genuinely good guy and a highly capable and inspiring leader, and I believe he is exactly the right person for the global product responsibility once famously held by the outspoken, oft-controversial Bob Lutz. So I jumped at an opportunity to join a group interview of Reuss (with mostly business reporters) at the Detroit Auto Show in January. It was an interesting session of mostly good questions, which he answered with refreshing candor and humor. "I look at 2013 and 2014, as the retooling of General Motors," Reuss said. "We've taken down almost every plant in North America, converted and turned it this last year, and to do that with award-winning vehicles and pretty flawless launches is key. We have to keep the train rolling on great product, because the rest won't happen without the best product, period." A reporter asked whether GM was pushing big trucks, SUVs and Corvettes again because gas is cheap. "No," Reuss said.
