*Edit 4/18/14*  If not sold by auction's end, this car will be sold locally!!

I am selling my highly modified 1986 Z-51 Corvette Coupe. This car just recently received over $20k worth in performance upgrades. There are 91K original miles on the body and frame and only 1K Miles on the entire drivetrain and suspension. It has an freshly rebuilt Automatic transmission. My original intent was to build a dual purpose roadracing/weekend street car but due to time restrictions and finacial difficulties I am forced to sell. I am the third owner of this vehicle and have owned it for the past 14 years. This car runs, brakes, and handles incredibly well! My main focus has been on the powertrain and suspension and was preparing to start on restoring the interior and body but did not have the opportunity to finish. Someone will have the chance to own an incredible C4 with an awesome array of high performance parts!

The car will need a little attention to the body and interior to make it perfect but as far as the drivetrain goes you are all set. The engine runs very strong and doesn't leak or smoke, perfect! This car is fast! To get a smoother cold idle and to squeeze more HP and MPG, I'd recommend a dyno tune, although the original chip has been modified by a mail order tuning company specifically for the combination used on this vehicle. The AC, emissions, and cruise control systems have been deleted for weight and HP purposes (Illinois does not require emissions tests for 25 yrs or older vehicles). The parking brake is also disconnected. The car sounds VERY aggressive on the street and is amazingly smooth on the expressway with hardly any interior resonance! Gets an average of 18mpg city/highway. I have got as much as 26mpg on the highway!

Before I get to the good stuff, I will start off by listing the areas that need a little attention:

- The most obvious is the front bumper. A car backed up on the front end as I was parked in a gas station, so the front bumper was replaced with a used one but not painted. Also, as a result, there were a few minor, barley visible, stress cracks in the paint on the front right corner of the hood as well. A few wires from the harness that runs alondside the bumper will have to be mounted correctly. I was planning to take it to a body shop and have them do it all at once but did not have the chance to do so.

- All C4's have two sets of keys. One for the driver side door and one for the ignition. I accidentally misplaced the door key. A quick trip to a locksmith will take care of this. Ignition key/ with resistor chip and ignition blank keys are included though!

- There is a tiny impact crack on the windshield right beneath the widshield wipers, you cannot see the crack unless you lift the wipers up.

- The rest of the paint is in good shape and shines with some chips/scratches here and there consistent with age and use. The rear right fender is starting to have slightly visible spider webbing in the clear coat.

- The high speed setting on the wipers does not work, I believe the interior switch will have to be replaced. Intermittent and medium setting work just fine.

- The rear hatch glass hydraulic lift is becoming weak and will need to be replaced.

- Passenger selt belt sticks at times.

- Small leak around the door areas as common with older C4's, new weatherstripping will take care of this.

- Driver side power door lock switch mount in door panel needs repair as well as top trim (loose).

- A few little interior trim pieces are missing ie. the headlight knob and one of the rear targa top mount covers. All these can be easily purchased from an aftermarket corvette parts catalog like Eckler's or Corvette      Central. Interior squeaks and rattles common with 25+ year old C4's. Could be chased down and minimized.

- The radio head unit is made by Pioneer and has a CD player. The front 4 speakers are connected and work just fine. The rear speakers will require an additional amp to power up. I had one but it stopped working, All the wiring is done and ready to accept a new amp unit.

Most of these repairs are minor and inexpensive. You will just need to invest a little time and effort if you want to make this car perfect.

Now onto the good:

Both window motors and ribbons were just replaced. The carpeting is only a few years old and all the "rear" interior trim pieces in the hatch are new as well as the halo trim. The entire engine was built with brand new parts down to the bolts with no expenses spared. All engine sensors are brand new. Only the best synthetic oils used. The suspension and braking system were completely restored with brand new parts as well. The automatic transmission was rebuilt with heavy duty clutches and the entire rear end assembly is brand new. Brand new wheels and tires. Basically nearly every single part under the hood and body are new and with less than 1k miles! There was well over $20,000 in high performance parts alone spent on this vehicle! This is not factoring in labor costs! All parts listed below were installed as brand new and NOT used or remanufactured!

The USPS needs 180,000 new delivery vehicles, automakers gearing up to bid

Wed, Feb 18 2015

Winning the New York City Taxi of Tomorrow tender was a huge prize for Nissan, even though the company is still working through the process of claiming its prize. The United States Postal Service has begun the process to take bids for a new delivery vehicle to replace the all-too-familiar Grumman Long Life Vehicle, and that will be a much larger plum for the automaker who wins it, perhaps worth more than six billion dollars. The Grumman LLV is an aluminum body covering a Chevrolet S-10 pickup chassis and General Motors' Iron Duke four-cylinder engine. The USPS bought them from 1987 to 1994, and the 163,000 of them still in service are a monumental drain on postal resources: they get roughly ten miles to the gallon instead of the quoted 16 mpg, drink up more than $530 million in fuel each year, and their constant repair needs like the balky sliding door and leaky windshields have led the service to increase the annual maintenance budget from $100 million to $500 million. A seat belt is about as modern as it gets for safety technology, and the USPS says that assuming things stay the same, it can't afford to run them beyond 2017. Last year it put out two triage requests for proposals seeking 10,000 new chassis and drivetrains for the Grumman and 10,000 new vehicles. The LLV is also too small for the modern mail system in which package delivery is growing and letter delivery is declining. The service says it doesn't have a fixed idea of the ideal "next-generation delivery vehicles," but it listed a number of requirements in its initial request and is open to any proposal. Carriers have some suggestions, though, saying they want better cupholders, sun visors that they can stuff letters behind, a driver's compartment free of slits that can swallow mail, and a backup camera. The request for information sent to automakers pegs the tender at 180,000 vehicles that would cost between $25,000 and $35,000 apiece, and it will hold a conference on February 18 to answer questions about the contract. GM is the only domestic maker to avow an interest, while Ford and Fiat-Chrysler have remained cagey. Yet with a possible $6.3 billion up for grabs and some new vans for sale that would be advertised on every block in the country, we have a feeling everyone will be listening closely come February 18. We also have a feeling the LeMons series is going to be flooded with Grummans come 2017. News Source: Wall Street Journal, Automotive News - sub.

GM exploring ways to raise half-ton Duramax diesel tow rating

Sun, Nov 3 2019

Lots of truck owners cheered when GM announced fuel economy numbers for the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado with the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel inline-six. Even after Ram let loose its EPA mileage ratings for the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, the Chevy oil-burner still took the trophy. The victory was years in the making, GM engineers spending an entire four-year development cycle refining the LM2 Duramax to increase mileage. The tradeoff, as well all know by now, is towing; the Duramax in half-ton duty pulls a maximum 9,300 pounds in the Silverado. Rivals across town can do more, the Ford F-150 PowerStroke rated at 11,500, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel game to pull 12,560. GM engineer John Barta told Muscle Cars & Trucks that more hauling chops could be on the way, explaining, "We’re actually looking at upgrading some of the materials around (the engine bay) to see if we can maybe raise our tow rating." Engine bay materials are at issue due to thermal complexities underhood. John Barta, GM's assistant chief engineer of diesel engine controls, said the Duramax's inline-six configuration allowed engineers to get emissions hardware like the combined selective catalytic reduction, diesel oxidation catalysts, and diesel particulate filter unit closer to the engine, where it heats up quicker, getting emissions down quicker. But that filter puts another heat source in those confines, enforcing a cap on the tow rating to keep the engine and other systems from overheating. "If you look under the hood," he said, "youÂ’ll see a significant amount of silver ‘moon tapeÂ’ around to make sure things arenÂ’t getting overheatedÂ… if we were to go up in higher towing, which we can, we start impacting the possibility of deteriorating some of the components.” There isn't much space for more grille, so swapping for a better grade of "moon tape" or a different kind of material could reduce engine bay heat, extracting a higher tow rating in the process.  It's important to note a point Barta's been making for months about the Duramax figures, though. "Even though itÂ’s nice to brag about big numbers, in reality, light duty customers are not towing that large with their trucks," and, "We do know that (95 percent) of our light duty customers donÂ’t tow over 9,000 pounds." On our First Drive of the 2020 Silverado diesel we called out the tow rating, but emphasized that the Chevy and GMC have more important challenges to overcome.

Here are all the cars GM is axing as part of its restructuring

Tue, Nov 27 2018

GM plans to kill off a couple of great and a few meh cars as part of its restructuring. Here's a rundown of all the cars being phased out of production. None of the vehicles GM axed were SUVs or crossovers. Instead, it was an action reminiscent of what Ford recently decided to do by discontinuing U.S. sales every Blue Oval sedan. GM just didn't explicitly say, "We're killing our cars," like Ford did — probably a smart move by GM. Keep scrolling down to see the full list of deceased GM models. Chevrolet Volt This one was the most surprising of all the cars GM decided to can, primarily because cars with plugs are supposed to be our future. However, maybe consumer demand just isn't quite there yet for a plug-in like the Volt. We came up with all sorts of ideas for what was to blame for the untimely demise of the Volt, so go check that out for a full breakdown of the situation. Cadillac CT6 Here's another car we'll be sad to see go. Cadillac's flagship sedan was such a joy to drive, and it served as the conduit to deliver GM's semi-autonomous Super Cruise system, which still hasn't been surpassed by any other company's technology in our books, even Tesla's Autopilot. That being said, GM does plan to produce the CT6 until March, with the last cars coming off the line set to be twin-turbo V8 V-Series models. If it's going to go, this seems like a pretty great way to make an exit. We'll be patiently awaiting the next flagship Cadillac once this one finally fades away. Chevrolet Impala The Impala is actually a pretty good car. It doesn't sell terribly, and we think it's a completely satisfactory car to drive. However, people would rather have a Traverse or Equinox these days, making the Impala one of the vehicles to find itself on this list. Chevrolet is keeping its smaller brother, the Malibu, but a big, full-size sedan just isn't what people are ordering up these days. It's unfortunate to see it go, but we won't be broken up over it. Chevrolet Cruze We wouldn't rank the Cruze at the top of the compact car class, but if you were looking for a small, cheap American car, it was either this or the Focus. The Cruze had the potential to be a true small performance car if Chevy had ever wanted to make it into one. But sadly, we're seeing it bow out before Chevy ever tried to slot a hot engine and suspension in there to make it competitive with other hot hatches. A Cruze SS would have made enthusiasts take notice.
