1971 Chevy Corvette LS-5 Coupe 454 4-speed 53,600 miles
First off, this car gets compliments everywhere I go. It looks sharp, sounds sharp, and runs great. It is a trophy winning car and has won a few trophies at local and regional shows (It may not win a NCRS award, but then again this is priced accordingly and is meant to be driven). I am very particular however, striving to model original specs and will do my best to point out the flaws in the description below. I purchased this car approximately 8 years ago and have spent a great amount of time and money ensuring this car retains its factory appearance. The green color is factory correct and was re-done approximately 8-10 years ago. It shines nicely, but some minor gravel chips or minor scratches can be noted as this car is a driver (I drive it about 1,000-2,000 miles per year). It does have about 6 minor rivet head bumps visible under certain lighting conditions on the front bumper area. The average person would never notice, but it is worth mentioning and this is a common problem among the Stingrays due to how they were produced. The chrome is in great shape all around with the only issue being some loss of brightness on the rear bumper underside by the exhaust. Matching the green exterior is the factory correct green interior. The wheels are painted a correct silver with genuine GM center caps and new trim rings. The tires have about 60-75 percent tread remaining. The carpet and floor mats are new along with all interior panels dyed to match and steering column freshened. Additionally, the package tray in the rear has been replaced and correct jack and jacking instructions installed. The fiber optic indicators and quartz clock do work. Also inside all gauges work as they should. Major items that are not factory inside include a Hurst shiftter and aftermarket radio.
Under the hood the engine was internally rebuilt just prior to me purchasing it about 8 years ago with 43,000(ish) miles. I am not a gearhead, but I was told (and have a spec card somewhere) it has a different cam and pistons in it. As far as the engine is concerned those are the only items "aftermarket" and they are internal. Externally, the engine bay has been refreshed with a Chevy orange block, new brake booster, correct metal fuel lines, anodized cap, new GM hoses with correct clamps, new alternator, new belts, refreshed black pulleys and fan, black radiator support, new inner fenders, refreshed steering rods and clutch linkage, and correct braided spark plug wires. I likely left some items out, but as you see in the pictures the engine bay shows very well and is mostly factory correct.
Mechanically the car runs very well. I drive it frequently enough to keep the fluids and gears moving. It seems if you let old cars sit things go bad so I try to drive it about once per week to keep the "cobwebs" out. I recently had all new stainless steel brakes installed, clutch adjusted, timing and dwell set, u-joints greased, and cap and rotor installed. I never had any issues with it breaking down or not starting in the 8 years I have owned it, it is very reliable! The only thing I would do if I were to keep it is have the carburetor tuned as it does sputter a bit under full throttle. For normal driving purposes, however, it runs very smooth and sounds great. It does have a new stainless/anodized exhaust with Magnaflow mufflers giving it a nice tone.
One question that frequently comes up with this car and others like it is "is it numbers matching"? I have owned it for around 8 years and the previous owner had it ten years. I have no reason to believe it is not the original engine. I have not been able to verify however due to a double stamping on the VIN pad. I have done some research and interestingly enough discovered that folks at the GM plant took "liquid lunches" well into the 1980's and though uncommon it has been documented to see Corvettes leave the factory with a VIN pad that is illegible due to the worker on the line stamping incorrectly two stamps on top of one another rather than side by side as would be correct and proper for this car. So "is it numbers matching?". I think so and have no reason to believe it is not, but I can NOT guarantee 100 percent that it is due to the illegible stamping!
Overall I have been very happy with the car, but after 8 years I am looking to take on a new project and need the garage space. I hope the new owner will enjoy it as much as I have!
Pricing: This vehicle's value can range from $28,275 - $44,100 according to Hagerty. com (Ebay no longer allows links so google "1971 corvette value" and the Hagerty site will display detailed pricing information and is the standard for classic car values) . New Bright creating exclusive 1:8 scale radio-controlled C7 Corvette
Mon, 04 Feb 2013If you want a new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette but can't quite save up enough pennies for the monthly payment, we have good news for you. Toymaker New Bright has pulled the covers off of its 1:8 scale remote-controlled version of the American sports car. Complete with a very detailed interior and LED headlights, this large-scale R/C is as close as most of us will ever come to having one of the menacing Chevrolet models to call our very own. New Bright still hasn't released pricing or availability, but word has it the coupe should hit the market soon.
Right now, it appears as if the C7 will hit shelves in Torch Red, though we don't know if other colors are planned as well. The good news is that New Bright isn't exactly turning its back on the old C6 - representatives say the company will continue to make its popular C6R racecar for those who prefer round taillights.
Watch how Corvette Racing's new collision-avoidance radar system works
Fri, 22 Mar 2013When it comes to technology used in racecars, we generally expect it to trickle down to production cars, not the other way around. Well, Pratt & Miller has developed a new rear-facing radar that operates in a similar fashion to what we're used to in modern blind spot detection systems, only it is also capable of tracking cars as they approach and relaying vital information to the driver via a large display screen.
The innovative radar system debuted at last weekend's 12 Hours of Sebring for Corvette Racing, and this system makes perfect sense for endurance races like this since the cars sometimes have to drive through the night and in poor weather conditions.
The radar can detect cars even with poor visibility, and uses easy-to-distinguish symbols for the driver to identify.
More Corvette Stingray Factoids: Vanishing panel gaps and 26-mpg LT1
Thu, 28 Feb 2013During January's Detroit Auto Show, we managed a longer than expected wandering tag-team interview with C7 Corvette chief engineering exec Tadge Juechter (pictured above), and LT1 engine boss Jordan Lee (pictured below). They are, quite honestly, two of the very nicest bigshot lads to ever walk the engineering corridors of an American manufacturer. Both are enthralled by what they're doing for a day job. So are we.
We've followed the pre-sale anticipation for the Chevrolet C7 Corvette Stingray like an Oreck vacuum yanking every speck of dirt from a well-trampled carpet. Everything is reportable and contains a grain of further knowledge about this dramatically important and cheered-for car, as it continues to be pressured into representing all that is superior about the American dream. The Corvette wears one heavy cloak.
So, most of what was talked about has been expertly reported already right here on Autoblog. But, looking through our notes again, both Jeuchter and Lee added facts to the buzzing mix.
