1963 Corvette Sting Ray convertible.  This is a very early production '63 with the tool wells under the seats.  Options include four speed transmission, power steering, power brakes, and power windows.  The car originally had a hard top but that is long gone.  The original color was Sebring silver with a black interior.  Non-original 327 engine.  Very solid frame and bird cage with no rust.  This is a complete car that needs work, either a full restoration or you can drive it as you fix it up over time.

Paint and Body:

The car needs paint.  The paint job was a poor quality job when it was done and now it's old.  It looks okay from 20 feet but there are many cracks in the paint and areas where it has faded.  There are no cracks in the fiberglass except for minor hairline cracks at the corners of the head light openings, which is very common on these cars.  Obviously all four fenders have been flared, but there are no cracks around the flares and they look like they were fairly well done.  The flares could be retained for that period hotrod look or could be easily put back to stock by replacing the rear quarter panels and repairing the fronts since the front flares do not go far at all into the hood surround panel.  Bonding strips are in place.  It looks like the '67 front fenders were added, not a complete replacement of the front clip.  Head light buckets are the original '63 fiberglass units.  The grille is 1966-67.

The hood appears to be an original '67 big block hood, probably worth a couple thousand dollars by itself.  Wheels are American Racing 5-spokes.

Chrome is in good condition with only a couple minor dings but will probably need to be re-plated.  The stainless trim is in good condition but will need to be polished.  There are several small tears in the top so it will need a new top.  The soft-top frame is in good condition.  The driver side vent window frame is cracked so it will need to be repaired or replaced.  All glass is in good condition with no chips or cracks.

The frame is dirty/greasy but the frame and bird cage are very solid with no rust.

Interior:

The interior looks decent but it will need work depending on your plans for the car.  Dash pads, door panels and carpet are in fair driver condition.  The seats are from a '66 Corvette and are in good condition with no rips, tears or split seams.  Seat belts are non-original and mismatched.  The glove box door is 1964-67 metal, not the correct plastic '63 door.  The steering wheel is in excellent condition with no cracks.  The console is correct and in good condition.

The speedometer, tachometer, odometer, fuel gauge, and oil pressure gauge all work.  The correct '63 clock has been restored and works.  The battery and temperature gauges do not work, but I've never had any problem with overheating whatsoever.  The power windows work on both sides but they're slow so the mechanisms should be cleaned up and lubricated.

Mechanical:

The car runs great... the engine fires right up with no smoke and no leaks.  Runs very smoothly and does not overheat.  Headers give it an aggressive musclecar sound.  The engine is a '67 Camaro/Chevelle 327/275.  The block is dated August 25, 1966, which is very early and would probably be hard to find and worth something to someone with an early '67 Camaro or Chevelle.  The intake manifold is a very rare and desirable piece... a 1967-68 Camaro Z-28 factory intake.  Carb is a newer Edelbrock.  Dual exhaust is new with new pipes and mufflers.  The transmission is a non-original Muncie M-20.  The rear end is the original correctly dated 3.36 positraction unit.

The car drives pretty well for an old unrestored car but could probably use suspension work.  Brakes were rebuilt by the previous owner and work well.  Power steering works well.  The engine compartment and dash wiring harnesses were replaced.  Windshield wipers do not work (no switch).  The head lights do not roll out, but when I wiggled the wires under the dash the motors did activate for a second so I suspect it's just a connection or bad ground; I just haven't taken the time to troubleshoot it.

The odometer works and reads 68,878 miles.  This could be the true mileage but I have no documentation and no way of knowing.

Sale:

In fairness to all bidders I will not disclose the reserve, but it is under the Buy It Now price.  Remember that Buy It Now goes away after the reserve has been met, so plan your bidding accordingly.  $500 deposit due within 48 hours of auction end, balance due within 10 days of auction end.  Cash, cashier's check, or wire transfer accepted.  In person inspections in Albuquerque, NM welcomed.  I can help coordinate transportation and can store the car for about 30 days.  I have tried to describe the car completely and honestly to the best of my ability, but please understand that the car is a project that needs work, so it's impossible to list every little defect.  If you have any questions please ask.

The car is sold with a clean clear New Mexico title in the sellers name.  Title will be released when payment is received in full.

I would consider airplane trades: Cherokee, C172, etc.

This is a great opportunity to get into a very solid mid year Corvette that you can restore or fix up over time.  It's not particularly original but it has a great look and it will be a wonderful project.  Good luck and happy bidding!

Chevy Corvette Stingray picks up another award, this time from Automobile

Mon, 18 Nov 2013

The new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray has picked up another buff book accolade after capturing Road and Track's Performance Car of the Year award. The seventh-generation of America's sports car (sorry Viper, Mustang, et al.) has been named Automobile Magazine's Automobile of the Year.
Automobile's award to the Corvette over competitors is the mirror image of its rival Motor Trend, which named the Cadillac CTS its car of the year over the C7. The CTS was, according to the Automobile team, the closest contender to the mighty Stingray. Great news all around for General Motors it seems.
As for what pushed the Corvette past its distant, four-door cousin, Automobile commended its excellent, 6.2-liter V8 calling the car's performance "simply awesome" while also remarking that it is easier to drive fast than ever before thanks to steering and chassis tweaks. Following a theme set by other publications, there were also plaudits for the interior, of all things, with the buff book complimenting the car's ergonomics and material quality, while also praising the standard seats.

C7 Corvette makes inaugural ad appearance in Chevy's first spot with new slogan

Mon, 11 Feb 2013

Chevrolet's "Runs Deep" tagline has finally been run into the ground, replaced with the Bowtie brand's "Find New Roads" slogan that's part of parent General Motors' plan to unify its everyday brand's marketing efforts worldwide. The new Chevrolet campaign was ushered in on prime time last night during the Grammy Awards on CBS, and the first spot, a 90-second full-line ad, also marks the first appearance of the 2014 Corvette Stingray in a commercial.
Being a full-line ad, the commercial is composed of vignettes centered on different vehicles in the brand's lineup. The all-new 2014 Impala also makes its first commercial appearance in dapper fashion, and time is spent on a skateboarding Sonic and a bouquet of brightly colored Spark hatchbacks driven by fashionable women. The ad starts and ends with Chevy's green halo car, the Volt, along with a young girl with her robotic dog (yes, really).
Chevrolet's "Runs Deep" campaign got off to a rocky start in the fall of 2010, but it did last for a couple of years with some tweaks. This new one, "Find New Roads" seems more intent on drawing new customers into the fold than the outgoing tagline, which seemed to play more toward the brand faithful. It admittedly reminds us more than a little the short-lived "Find Your Own Road" Saab motto (which, we note, was conceived while the Swedish brand was under GM's control), but no matter, we still think it's got more long-term potential than "Runs Deep."

Chevrolet planning low-cost Corvette under Stingray?

Wed, 27 Feb 2013

If you're burnt out on musings about the Chevrolet Corvette, you'll want to go ahead and skip this post. Motor Trend reports General Motors is hard at work on a low-cost version of the seventh-generation sports car for 2015. Rumored to be called the Corvette Coupe, the car will forgo the Stingray and skip the 450-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 engine in favor of a 5.3-liter V8 with under 400 ponies. If you're keeping track, that's a shade of the same engine found behind the headlights of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra.
The report also suggests the Coupe will receive a number of aesthetic tweaks to separate it from the Stingray, including different front and rear fascias as well as new front fenders and a rear diffuser. Motor Trend says the point of all this is to cut the car's price tag, which means we may see a Corvette on showroom floors for less than $50,000 if this car comes to fruition.
